Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 750 hours or every year

John Deere says change the oil and filter every 750 hours or once a year. The 750-hour interval only applies with Plus-50 II oil, a genuine John Deere filter and low-sulphur diesel; otherwise change every 500 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Cab activated carbon filter kit (where fitted)

Cab · every 750 hours or every year

Carbon filters protect the driver when spraying. John Deere says never clean them; replace every 750 hours or 1 year, or with the engine primary air filter, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the carbon filter, wearing gloves and a mask as it may hold spray residue.
  3. Bag the old filter and dispose of it as chemical waste.
  4. Fit the new filter and check the cover seals.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask, Gloves

Fuel filters (primary with water separator, and final)

Fuel · every 750 hours

John Deere says replace both fuel filters every 750 hours. Drain water from the primary filter whenever it shows.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around both filters before opening anything.
  3. Drain any water from the primary filter into a container.
  4. Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
  5. Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Gloves, Rags

Transmission and hydraulic filters

Transmission · every 750 hours

John Deere says replace the hydraulic and transmission filters after the first 100 hours, then after the first 750 hours and every 750 hours, always as a pair. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so this is a filter-only task.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Transmission oil filter1AL221066
Hydraulic oil filter1AL169573
Step-by-step
  1. Check your transmission and pump size, then order the right filters.
  2. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  3. With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure.
  4. Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.

Known problems

Two sheets, different parts

Deere's January 2020 sheet has its labels shifted along the page, so some filters appear against the wrong name. The April 2021 sheet is clear and is used here. Check your serial number.

Crankcase vent filter is 750 hours

On these 6M models the sheet says 750 hours, not the 1,500 hours given for the 6120M.

No DPF part on the sheet

Ask a dealer for the DPF part number and service for your serial number.
