Service jobs and parts
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 500 hours or every year
John Deere says change the oil and filter after the first 100 hours, then every 500 hours or once a year. The 500-hour interval only applies with Plus-50 II oil, a genuine John Deere filter and low-sulphur diesel; otherwise change every 250 hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | 15W-40 (10W-30, 5W-40 or 0W-40 in colder weather). Plus-50 II, ≈23.5 L. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC EHPD 15W-40 | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | RE539279 |
Step-by-step
- Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
- Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
- Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
- Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark.
- Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.
Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags
Cab activated carbon filter kit (where fitted)
Cab · every 500 hours or every year
Carbon filters protect the driver when spraying. John Deere says never clean them; replace every 500 hours or 1 year, or with the engine primary air filter, whichever comes first.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activated carbon filter kit | 1 | AL208648 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out.
- Remove the carbon filter, wearing gloves and a mask as it may hold spray residue.
- Bag the old filter and dispose of it as chemical waste.
- Fit the new filter and check the cover seals.
Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask, Gloves
Fuel filters
Fuel · every 500 hours
John Deere says replace the fuel filters every 500 hours. The 6140R and 6150R take a separate primary and final filter; the 6170R, 6190R and 6210R take a primary and secondary kit.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary fuel filter | 1 | 6140R, 6150R | RE541922 |
| Final fuel filter | 1 | 6140R, 6150R | RE541925 |
| Fuel filter kit (primary and secondary) | 1 | Instead of the two above on the 6170R, 6190R and 6210R | RE541746 |
Step-by-step

- Fit the new secondary element straight away, then refit or renew the primary.
- Close the housing and check the clips.
Tools: Torch, Damp cloth
Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change
Transmission · when needed
John Deere's sheet gives the oil quantities but not the oil change interval, so check your handbook. Both filters are always changed with the oil.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hy-Gard oil | 1 | UTTO tractor transmission oil. ≈63–81 L depending on model and transmission (see fluids). Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC UTTO | check your handbook |

Step-by-step
- Watch the display for exhaust filter warnings and let regenerations finish.
- If the warning stays on, book DPF replacement or cleaning with a John Deere dealer within 250 hours.
- Never work near the exhaust until it has cooled; it runs very hot, especially after a regeneration.
Tools: Dealer service tool
Front axle and final drive oil change
Front axle · when needed
The front axle has its own Hy-Gard in the housing and both final drives. John Deere's sheet gives the quantities but not the interval, so check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hy-Gard | 1 | ≈8.2 L housing plus ≈1.7 L (no brake) or ≈2.6 L (with brake) per final drive. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC UTTO | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.

| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cool-Gard II coolant | 1 | ≈28.2 L | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Only work on a cold engine; the cooling system is under pressure when hot.
- Drain the system from the radiator and engine drain points into a clean tray.
- Flush with clean water, refit the drains and refill with the correct Cool-Gard II mix.
- Run the engine up to temperature, let it cool and top up the level.

Known problems
Not the same as the 6145R–6215R
Deere changed the filter parts and the service intervals when the range was renamed. This older sheet has 500-hour fuel filters and a 500-hour oil change; the newer 6145R–6215R sheets use 750 hours.
Parts depend on model size
The fuel filters, DPF and hydraulic filter differ between the 6140R/6150R and the 6170R/6190R/6210R. Check which you have.
Engine type
The OCV filter depends on whether the engine is the 4.5 L (4045) or 6.8 L (6068) type. Check the engine plate.

Repair guides
- Hard starting, stalling or fuel starvation: changing the fuel filters and priming (6R, 6M, 5M) (Moderate, 1 hour): Engine cranks but will not start after a filter change or running out of fuel, loses power under load, stalls, or the water-in-fuel warning appears.
- Exhaust warning light, reduced power or DEF warning: owner checks before calling the dealer (6R, 6M, 5M) (Specialist, 30 minutes of checks; repair by a dealer): Warning light for the exhaust filter or DEF, engine goes into reduced power, frequent regenerations, DEF quality or dosing fault codes.
- Slow or weak linkage, noisy hydraulics or transmission warning: owner checks (6R, 6M, 5M) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Lift is slow or will not lift the usual load, remotes are slow, hydraulic oil looks milky, or a transmission or hydraulic filter warning shows.
- Loss of power, black smoke or engine overheating: air intake and cooling checks (6R, 6M, 5M) (Easy, 45 minutes): Engine hot or coolant temperature warning, black smoke, lack of power, or the air filter warning is on.
