Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 250 hours
John Deere's sheet says change the engine oil and filter at 100 hours, then every 250 hours. The 250 hours can be stretched to 500 hours if you use Plus-50 oil and a John Deere filter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | 15W-40 (10W-30, 5W-40 or 0W-40 in colder weather). John Deere Plus-50 II, ≈26 L (7720) or ≈24 L (7820, 7920), with filter. Aztec Oils match: EMPROTEC EHPD 15W-40 | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | 7720 only. Deere filter sheet, 7020 large frame | RE504836 |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | 7820 and 7920. Deere filter sheet, 7020 large frame | RE509672 |
Step-by-step
- Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
- Remove the filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the filter head clean.
- Oil the new filter seal and fit the filter hand-tight as marked on it.
- Refit the plug and fill with Plus-50 II to the full mark (≈26 L on the 7720, ≈24 L on the 7820 and 7920).
- Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level. Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.
Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for the sump plug, Funnel, Gloves, Rags
Fuel filters
Fuel · every 500 hours or every year
Deere's sheet says change the 7720 fuel filters every 750 hours. On the 7820 and 7920 it says every 500 hours or annually. Always change the primary and final filters together.

- Check the covers seal.
Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask
Transmission and hydraulic oil filters
Transmission · every 750 hours
Deere's sheet says change the transmission filter, the hydraulic filter and the front PTO filter (if fitted) at 100 hours, then every 750 hours. The sheet gives no oil change interval, so the oil is a separate task.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmission filter | 1 | PowrQuad / AutoQuad (PQ/AQ) | RE205726 |
| Transmission filter | 1 | IVT | RE161181 |
| Hydraulic oil filter | 1 | All models | RE273801 |
| Front PTO oil filter | 1 | If front PTO fitted | LVU14258 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve hydraulic pressure.
- Let hot oil cool before starting; it burns.
- Clean around each filter, remove it and catch the oil.
- Fit the new filters with oiled seals.
- Run the engine briefly, stop, check for leaks and top up with Hy-Gard to the mark.
Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves
Engine air filters (primary and secondary)
Engine · every 1,000 hours or every year
Deere's sheet says replace the primary air filter every 1,000 hours or annually, and as required by working conditions. The secondary is not cleaned; change it with every second primary.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary air filter | 1 | RE196945 | |
| Secondary air filter | 1 | Every second primary change. Do not clean | RE181915 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
- Open the housing and take out the primary element. Leave the secondary element in place unless it is due.
- Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
- Fit the new element, check it seats evenly and close the housing. When the secondary is due, remove the primary first, change the secondary at once, then refit the primary.
Tools: Torch, Damp cloth
Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change
Transmission · when needed
Deere's sheet gives the oil quantity but no oil change interval, so check your handbook. The transmission, hydraulic and front PTO filters are changed with the oil.
