Service jobs and parts
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 250 hours or every year
Deere's 7030 large frame sheets say change the oil and filter at 100 hours, then every 250 hours. This can be extended to 500 hours if John Deere Plus-50 oil and a John Deere filter are used.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | Plus-50, ≈26 L with filter | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | RE504836 |
Step-by-step
- Warm the engine, then park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and implements to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
- Remove the oil filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
- Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
- Refit the drain plug and fill with Plus-50 to the full mark.
- Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.
Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves
Fuel filters (pre-filter and main filter)
Fuel · every 500 hours
Deere's sheets say replace the fuel pre-filter and the main fuel filter every 500 hours and as required. Common-rail injectors are easily damaged by dirt or water.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel pre-filter (primary) | 1 | RE541922 | |
| Fuel filter element (secondary) | 1 | RE522878 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
- Clean around both filters so dirt cannot get in.
- Drain any water from the pre-filter into a container.
- Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.
- Prime the system as your handbook describes. Never crack open the high-pressure pipes on a common-rail engine.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves
Fuel water separator element (if fitted)
Fuel · every 500 hours
Deere's sheets say replace the water separator element every 500 hours and as required. The 2018 sheet adds that it can be back-flushed up to five times before it is replaced.

- Clean around each filter, then remove them and catch the oil.
- Fit new filters with oiled seals, hand-tight.
- Start the engine, run it briefly, stop it and top up Hy-Gard to the correct level. Check the filters for leaks.
Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench, Rags, Gloves

|---|---|---|---|
| Primary air filter | 1 | Do not clean | RE196945 |
| Secondary (safety) air filter | 1 | At every second primary change | RE181915 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
- Open the housing and take out the primary element. Do not knock or blow it out to reuse it.
- Only remove the secondary element when it is due.
- Wipe the housing out with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
- Fit the new element(s), check they seat evenly and close the housing.
Tools: Torch, Damp cloth
Cab fresh air and recirculation filters
Cab · every 1,000 hours or every year
Deere's sheets say clean the cab filters every 250 hours and replace them every 1,000 hours, once a year or as required, whichever comes first.

Known problems
PTO drive loss
Farmers Weekly describes a 7930 that lost PTO drive when a circlip snapped (from big square baler shock loads), letting the clutch pack lubrication valve move. The circlip is cheap, but the job means dropping the pick-up hitch, draining the back end and removing the PTO housing.
Head gasket and EGR
Farmers Weekly names head gaskets, the EGR valve and the EGR cooler as the main engine trouble spots on the 30-series six-cylinder engines.
Different front PTO intervals
Deere's 2018 and 2024 sheets disagree on the front PTO filter (750 hours against 1,500 hours). Use the shorter until you have the handbook.
7430 and 7530 are small frame
The 7430 and 7530 Premium are small-frame tractors with different filters. This entry covers only the large frame 7630–7930.

Repair guides
- Rear PTO loses drive: broken circlip in the PTO clutch pack (Specialist, About an afternoon and evening for a workshop): PTO engages but loses drive or slips under load, especially after heavy shock loads such as a big square baler, and oil seems to dump each time the PTO is engaged.
- EGR and head gasket trouble: owner checks (Specialist, 1 hour for checks): Coolant loss with no leak, white smoke, bubbles in the expansion tank, overheating under load, EGR fault codes, loss of power, or a new noise from the engine.
- Overheating: water pump, thermostat, fan belt and tensioner (Moderate, 1 hour for a belt; 3–4 hours for a pump): Temperature gauge climbing, coolant from the pump weep hole, a noisy pump or tensioner bearing, a squealing belt, or a belt that has come off.
- Starter and alternator: no crank, slow crank or not charging (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Click but no crank, slow cranking, nothing when the key is turned, battery warning light on, flat batteries, or odd electronic warnings at start-up.
- Leaking or sticking spool valve (SCV) couplers (Moderate, 1–2 hours per coupler): Oil dripping from a rear coupler, hoses hard to connect or disconnect, a coupler that will not break away, or an implement that creeps.
- Rear hitch: sway blocks, lift link pins and position sensor (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Implement swings side to side, lower links knock, hitch height wanders or does not match the control, or hitch fault codes.
- Steering play: tie rod ends (Moderate, 1–2 hours per side): Free play at the steering wheel, wandering on the road, a knock over bumps, or uneven front tyre wear.
