Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 500 hours or every year

Deere says the first change is no earlier than 100 hours. After that, 500 hours or yearly, whichever comes first, but only with Plus-50 II oil, a John Deere filter and diesel with less than 15 ppm sulphur. If any of those is missing, change the oil and filter every 250 hours.

  1. Warm the engine for a few minutes, park on level ground, apply the park brake, lower the linkage and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Drain the engine oil into containers through the drain valve or plug your handbook shows. It will be hot, so wear gloves.
  3. Take off the old filter and clean the mounting face. Wet the new gasket with clean oil and fit the new filter as your handbook says.
  4. Refill with Plus-50 II oil and check the dipstick shows the safe (crosshatched) area.

Known problems

Oil capacity looks odd

The Deere guide prints 60.8 L for the 13.6 L engine and 43.5 L for the 15 L engine. That looks the wrong way round for engine size, so fill to the dipstick, not the number.

Oil interval needs the right conditions

The 500-hour change only counts with Plus-50 II oil, a Deere filter and ultra-low-sulphur diesel. Otherwise it is 250 hours.
