Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 400 hours or every year

Deere's manual lists the oil and filter at 500 hours for the 9.0 L and 13.5 L engines and at 400 hours for the 15 L engine (9570R, 9620R); the April 2021 sheet says 500 hours for the 15 L filter, so the shorter figure is used here. The 500 hours only applies with Plus-50 II oil, a John Deere filter and low-sulphur diesel. Change at least once a year.

Step-by-step
  1. Run the engine for about 5 minutes to warm the oil, then stop it. Park on level ground, apply the park brake, lower the linkage and any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. 15 L engine: the drain valve is inside the right-hand engine side frame; turn it to drain, using the drain hose, into containers for about 75 L. Close it when empty.
  3. Remove the oil filter and old gasket and clean the mounting face. Oil the new gasket; on the 15 L engine fill the filter with about 1.9 L of clean oil first, and tighten 3/4 to 1 turn after the gasket touches.
  4. Refill with oil and check the dipstick shows the crosshatched safe area.
  5. Start the engine for two minutes, stop and check for leaks and the level.

Oil change interval differs by engine

Deere's manual lists 400 hours for the 15 L engine and 500 hours for the 9.0 and 13.5 L engines. The sheet shows 500 for the 15 L filter. Check your handbook.

Fuel and air filter numbers not listed

The Apr 2021 sheet layout was too unclear to read the fuel and air filter numbers for each engine with confidence, so they are left out. Use your parts book.
