Service jobs and parts

Air cleaner (foam) clean and oil

Engine · every 200 km

Kawasaki's chart says inspect the air cleaner every 10 days or 200 km (120 mi), after a first check at 10 hours. Clean it straight away after riding in rain or mud, and more often in dust.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Air cleaner element (foam)1Only if torn, holed or hard. Genuine Kawasaki number from a specialist's cross-reference (MFG Supply); check your handbook11013-0021
Foam air filter oil1High-quality foam filter oilcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Work in a well-ventilated place away from sparks or flames. Never clean the foam with petrol or a low-flash-point solvent.
  2. Take out the element (see the service manual for the cover).
  3. Wash it in high-flash-point solvent, then squeeze it dry in a clean towel. Do not wring it or blow it dry; that tears the foam.
  4. Replace it if it is torn, holed or hard.
  5. Soak it in foam filter oil, squeeze out the excess, then wrap it in a clean rag and squeeze it as dry as possible.
  6. Refit it. Check the air cleaner drain tube: if water or oil has collected, take off the tube plug, drain it, and refit the plug and clamp firmly.

Tools: Bath of high-flash-point solvent, Clean towels, Gloves

Front brake pads, fluid level and rear brake play check

Brakes · every 600 km or every month

Kawasaki's chart says check front pad wear, front brake fluid level and the brake light switch every 30 days or 600 km (360 mi), and the rear brake lever and pedal play every 10 days or 200 km. Front pads are replaced at 1 mm.

Known problems

Belt indicator light and worn belts

Kawasaki ties the main service to the belt indicator light (about 100 hours). Check the belt and the belt failure detection system then; a broken belt can lock the transmission and wheels.

Wrong oil in the rear gear case

The rear final gear case holds the wet multi-plate brake and takes tractor hydraulic fluid, not gear oil. Kawasaki says do not mix the listed fluids.

Water in the air cleaner

Clean the foam straight after riding in rain or mud, and drain the air cleaner tube if water or oil collects.

Engine brake actuator wear

Kawasaki says replace the engine brake actuator lever assembly when its guide shoe wear exceeds 6 mm.

Older carburettor models

The 2004 service manual covers the first carburettor models (with choke and carb drain checks). Later fuel-injected models differ in fuel-system checks; use their own handbook.
