Air cleaner service (engine and converter)

Engine · every 50 hours

Petrol: Kawasaki says clean the engine air cleaner element and the converter air cleaner at 50 hours, then every 250 hours, and more often in dust or mud. Diesel: clean the converter air cleaner at 50 then every 250 hours, and clean the engine element whenever the red band shows in the restriction gauge. This entry uses 50 hours so it gets looked at often on dusty farm work.

Engine air cleaner element (petrol: foam outer and paper inner)1Genuine Kawasaki; listed in the 2006 Mule 3010 4x4 and 2011 Mule 4010 4x4 parts catalogues. Also sold as Rotary 19-1184211013-1290
Engine air cleaner element (diesel, paper)1Genuine Kawasaki; 2011 Mule 4010 Trans4x4 Diesel parts catalogue. Replace if very dirty or damaged11013-1290
Converter air cleaner element1Genuine Kawasaki for the 2006 Mule 3010 and the 2009–2010 diesel. From 2011 (diesel GBF on, petrol MBF on) the catalogue lists 11013-0037 in a new housing. Replace if damaged11013-1263
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Clean filters in a well-ventilated place with no sparks or flames nearby.
  2. Petrol: take out the element and separate the foam from the paper. Wash the foam in high flash-point solvent, then dry it by shaking or with compressed air. Do not wash, oil or blow the paper element with compressed air: replace it if dirty.
  3. Diesel: unlock the clamps, remove the cover and element and tap the element gently with a screwdriver handle to clear dust. Replace it if very dirty or damaged. Refit the cover with the TOP mark upwards.
  4. Converter air cleaner (both): clean the element the same way as the petrol foam and refit it.
  5. Petrol: drain the intake chamber of water at the same time.
  6. After working in rain or mud, clean the elements straight away.

Tools: Bowl of high flash-point solvent (not petrol), Screwdriver, Gloves

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 100 hours or every year

Diesel (4010 manual): oil every 100 hours or 1 year, filter every 250 hours, both first at 50 hours. Petrol (3010 manual): oil every 250 hours or 1 year, filter every 500 hours, both first at 50 hours. This entry uses the diesel's 100 hours; petrol owners can follow 250 hours. Kawasaki changes the filter only every second or third oil change, but by our rule the filter is changed every time.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  2. Petrol: fit the new filter in the fuel line the right way round for fuel flow and secure the clips.
  3. Diesel water drain: open the drain at the bottom of the filter and let water out until clean diesel runs, then close it.
  4. Diesel element: screw the new cartridge on by hand until the gasket touches the housing, then 1/3 turn more. Fit the drain cap with a new O-ring.
  5. Diesel bleeding: loosen the air vent plug on top of the filter (10 mm), press the priming pump button until fuel runs out free of bubbles, then tighten the plug.
  6. Wipe up any spilt fuel and check for leaks with the engine running.

Tools: Rag or small tray, 10 mm spanner (diesel air vent plug), Filter strap (diesel)

Coolant change

Cooling · every 2 years

Kawasaki says change the coolant every 2 years, check the radiator hoses at 50 hours then every 500 hours or yearly, and clean the radiator at 50 then every 250 hours. Petrol models also have a coolant filter to clean every year.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Coolant1Permanent ethylene-glycol antifreeze for aluminium engines, 50/50 with soft water. Petrol ≈4.6 L, diesel ≈4.4 Lcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Never open the radiator cap hot: coolant can spray out and scald.
  2. Remove the radiator cap in two steps: turn to the first stop, then push and turn to remove.
  3. Open the drain plugs and drain the coolant into a tray. Refit the plugs (diesel coolant drain plug 25 N·m).
  4. Diesel: raise the front wheels 20–30 cm so the radiator cap is the highest point, then fill slowly to bleed out air.
  5. Fill with a 50/50 mix of permanent antifreeze and soft water, fill the reservoir to the F mark (not above) and run the engine to purge air, then top up when cold.
  6. Petrol: check the coolant filter. If it looks dark or dirty, replace it and check the rest of the system.
  7. Clean mud off the radiator with low-pressure water or air. Coolant is poisonous to animals: dispose of it properly.

Tools: Drain tray (6 L), Funnel, Gloves, Soft brush

Known problems

Water and dust in the converter

The belt converter housing collects water and dust. Drain it through the hose on the bottom of the housing, and clean the converter air cleaner after wet or muddy work, or the belt slips and wears.

Diesel waxes in cold weather

Kawasaki warns that standard diesel thickens below about −7 °C and can block the fuel filter, so the engine will not restart. Use winter-grade diesel in cold spells.

Air in the diesel fuel system

After draining or changing the fuel filter, bleed the air with the priming pump and the vent plug on top of the filter before trying to start.

Wrong oil in the front diff

The front final gear case has a limited-slip differential and needs hypoid oil suitable for LSDs. Ordinary gear oil can make it chatter or slip.

Diesel oil overfill

Kawasaki warns not to fill the diesel engine above the full mark, as it can damage the engine.

Water in the petrol intake

The petrol models have an intake chamber that collects water. Drain it at every air cleaner service and after working in rain or deep water.
