Chain oil level check and top-up

Drive · every 10 hours

Keenan: check the chain oil level every day (380+ and 400+: sump level window on the left of the drive system; 270+ and 320+: automatic oiler reservoir where fitted). Park level, front to rear and side to side. Top up with chain-bar oil, never grease.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Chain-bar oil1Chain-bar oil such as Total / Finol Chainac MP or equivalent (879 kg/m3, 150 mm2/s at 40 degrees C). Sump mid-window: 400+ 28 L, 380+ 30 L. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XTcheck your handbook
Light oil for automatic oiler (270+, 320+)1SAE 10 or similar, reservoir 1.89 Lcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor, remove the PTO and park the machine level.
  2. Open the front left cover and look at the oil level window. The level should be midway.
  3. Top up through the filler if low. On 270+ and 320+ machines with an automatic oiler, check the reservoir and refill it.
  4. Do not use grease on the chains: it blocks the oil getting into the chain pins.

Tools: Funnel, Rag

Weekly grease: bearings, pivots, door, PTO

Lubrication · every 40 hours

Keenan's checklist: every week (40 hours) grease the PTO universal joints and sliding half shafts, the input shaft, rotor, auger and idler shaft bearings, the chain tensioner pivots, the VFC door cylinders and slides, hitch pivot, and axle and brake pivots. On the 400+ there are 34 grease points, and a manifold block reaches the hidden drive bearings.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Food-grade grease1Ceran FG (Total) or similar, for VFC door slides and cylinderscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Remove the PTO and park level.
  2. Grease the two PTO universal joints and smear grease on the sliding half shafts. See the PTO maker's booklet for the exact points.
  3. Grease the input, idler, rotor and auger bearings and the chain tensioner pivots (400+: points 1 to 12 and 24 to 34 in the manual), through the grease manifold where fitted.
  4. Grease the door's four hydraulic cylinder fittings and smear food-grade grease on the door slide plates.
  5. Grease the hitch pivot tube (swivel hitch) and the axle brake rod, brake arm and spring pivots.

Tools: Grease gun

Drive chain condition and tension

Drive · every 40 hours

Keenan: check the chain tension arms and chain condition every week. During the first month of ownership (chain bedding in) check tension daily. Spring pre-load on the 400+ primary chain is set by the centre adjuster bolt so the spring is 220 mm between mounting centres. The machine has a chain tension sensor that warns on the controller.

Step-by-step
  1. Remove the PTO and open the drive covers.
  2. Look for worn or stiff chain links, a bent pin or a chain jumping on a sprocket.
  3. Check each tensioner spring. On the 400+ primary chain, set the spring to 220 mm between mounting centres with the adjuster bolt, then retighten the locking nuts.
  4. Grease the tensioner pivots and refit the covers.

Tools: Spanners, Tape measure

Wheel nuts, bolts and tyres (weekly)

Chassis · every 40 hours

Keenan: check wheel nuts and tandem U-bolts after the first day, then check all nuts and bolts after the first week and weekly after that. Check tyre wear and pressure each week. Use a torque wrench, not an impact wrench.

Step-by-step
  1. Tighten the wheel nuts diagonally to the torque in your model manual.
  2. On tandem axles, check the U-bolt torque.
  3. Check every nut and bolt including bearing nuts for tightness.
  4. Check the tyres for damage and set the pressure from the table in the manual.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre gauge

Oil bath drain, wash and refill (380+, 400+)

Drive · every 450 hours or every year

Keenan: at the end of the season or at 450 hours, open the oil bath drain bung, drain the old oil, wash out dirt and old oil with paraffin, dry, refill to the correct level and run the machine for 5 to 10 minutes so all chains are lubricated.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park level and remove the PTO. Put a tray under the oil bath drain bung and open it.
  2. Let the oil drain fully, then wash out dirt and old oil with paraffin and dry the bath.
  3. Close the bung and refill with new chain-bar oil to the middle of the sight window.
  4. Run the machine for 5 to 10 minutes, then recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (35 L), Paraffin and brush, Funnel, Spanners

Wheel hub inspection

Axles · every 450 hours or every year

Keenan's yearly (end of season or 450 hours) list includes removing and inspecting the wheel hub, replacing worn parts and refitting.

  2. Wash and inspect the bearings and seals. Replace what is worn.
  3. Repack with grease, refit and set the end float as your handbook says.

Tools: Axle stands, Torque wrench, Bearing puller

Bale handler tine pivots and buffers (monthly)

Bale handler · every month

Keenan, bale handler models: each month grease each tine pivot, check the tines for looseness and check the tine buffers for cracks, splits or wear.

PTO shear bolt check and replacement

PTO · every year

Keenan lists the right shear bolt for each model and says a wrong grade can overload the machine and voids the warranty. The maker gives no interval: replace after a shear and check the spare stock yearly.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the PTO shaft on the machine carries the correct bolt for the model and input speed.
  2. Never fit a higher grade bolt than the table gives.
  3. Carry at least two spare bolts in the cab.

Tools: Spanners, Spare shear bolts

Body blade and top knife check

Mixing chamber · every year

Keenan: keep blades sharp without overheating them. Blunt blades raise the power needed and stress the drive system. Replace blades that cannot be sharpened any more. Because of the risk of entering the mixing chamber, blade replacement is for a Keenan-authorised service agent. The manual gives no hour interval.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Top knife blade, 990 mm1Check your handbook for the right blade for your model701518
Top knife blade, 990 mm, deep serrations1Standard on bale handler models704229
Step-by-step
  1. Look at the knife and body blade edges. Dull, bent or missing blades need work.
  2. Have the machine's blades sharpened or replaced by an authorised service agent. The 400+ body blades use M10 cup-head bolts, grade 8.8.
  3. Body blade numbers differ by thickness and model: check your handbook or parts book.

Tools: Grinder or sharpening stone (agent), Torque wrench

End-of-season lay-up

Storage · every year

Keenan: before storage wash the whole machine, grease or oil all the weekly lubrication points, open the drain bung in the mixing hopper, check the tyre pressures and store under cover. Take the weigh box off, keep it dry and put the load cell connector in a bag with a light smear of grease.

Step-by-step
  1. Wash the whole machine, including the mixing chamber and rotor.
  2. Grease and oil every weekly lubrication point (see the weekly task).
  3. Open the drain bung in the mixing hopper.
  4. Remove the weigh box. Lightly grease the load cell cable connector end and put it in a plastic bag.
  5. Check tyre pressures and store the machine under a cover or sheet.

Known problems

Chain bedding in

Keenan says check chain tension daily for the first month, because new chains and sprockets bed in and stretch.

Wrong shear bolt grade

A higher grade bolt than the table can overload the drive. Keenan warns it also voids the warranty.

Grease on the chains

Grease does not get into the chain pins. Use chain-bar oil only.
