Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
  2. Tighten the bolts and nuts on the machine and the drawbar eye bolts, and retighten the wheel nuts, to the torque table in the handbook.
  3. Check the tyre pressures.
  4. Drain water from the air brake tanks and retighten the air tank straps.
  5. Grease the flywheel PTO shaft. On the main drive shaft Krone gives 26 g, 100 g, 32 g and 6 g for its four points; check your handbook for when each is due.

Tools: Torque wrench, Socket set, Tyre pressure gauge, Grease gun

Gearbox and compressor oil change (all gearboxes)

Gearbox · every 200 hours

Krone: change the oil in the main, packer, transfer and both pick-up gearboxes, and the compressor, every 200 hours. The quantities are guides: fill to the level marks. None of the gearboxes has a filter.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear oil1SAE 90 GL4. Main ≈16.0 L; packer ≈1.23 L; transfer ≈1.9 or 1.7 L; pick-up top and bottom ≈0.5 L each; starter aid ≈1.2 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90check your handbook
Compressor oil1SAE 10W-40, ≈0.2 Lcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park the baler level, using the lower edges of the cross-members as the reference. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
  2. Main gearbox: take out the filler plug, undo the drain plug and drain the oil. Refit the drain plug and fill until the oil reaches the middle of the sight glass (about 16 L). Refit the filler plug firmly.
  3. Packer, transfer and pick-up gearboxes: drain each one, then fill through the filling hole until oil reaches the inspection hole. Refit both plugs.
  4. Change the compressor oil (about 0.2 L of 10W-40).
  5. Never mix oils of different specs. Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.

Tools: Large drain tray (20 L), Spanners for the plugs, Torque wrench, Funnel, Gloves

Knotter, twine and needle checks

Knotters and needles · every year

Krone asks for the twine tension to be rechecked whenever you change twine type. Too much tension causes knotter faults and overloads parts. The knotters are kept clean by timed air blasts set in the terminal.

Baling twine1100–130 m/kg, spools up to 340 mm × 370 mmcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Lock the knotter shaft as the handbook shows before working on the knotters or needles.
  2. Blow the knotters clean and check that each needle and its twine rollers are free, and the lower twines run around the needle rollers as threaded.
  3. Upper twine: the twine brake should hold the twine to 100–120 N. Set it with the wing nut (more gap X means more tension). The manual gives two different factory settings for X (65 mm and 30–35 mm), so set by the pull, not the gap.
  4. The tensioner arm should move down against its spring and guide the twine almost straight through its eye.
  5. Lower twines: taut but easy to pull.
  6. Check the knotter shaft brake as the handbook shows.
  7. In the terminal, set the knotter cleaning blow interval and blow time to suit the crop and dust.
  8. Recheck the tension each time you change twine type.

Tools: Spring balance (to 150 N), Rule, Air line, Gloves

Flywheel friction clutch venting (before the season)

Drive · every year

Krone: after a long stand the friction clutch linings can stick to the flywheel, so the clutch must be freed before use, and the discs checked for wear.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Friction discs1Only if worn past the limit. Check your handbook for the part numbercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Take the PTO shaft off the tractor, stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Slacken the nuts until the disc springs are free.
  3. Turn the PTO shaft by hand to break the linings free.
  4. Tighten the nuts crosswise back to dimension X = 16.6 mm.
  5. Check the friction discs for even wear at 4 points round the edge. Replace them when dimension Y is under 50 mm.

Tools: Spanners, Rule or vernier caliper

Pick-up and feed drive chain tension

Chains · every year

Krone gives the factory settings for the right-hand drive chains. If a chain is too long, take out one link.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Open the right-hand guard.
  2. Feed roller drive chain: the spring is set to X = 100 mm. Tighten the nut to add tension and lock it with the counter nut.
  3. Tine rotor and auger drive chain: the screw is set to X = 50 mm. Screw it in to add tension and lock it with the counter nut.
  4. If a chain has no adjustment left, take out one link.
  5. Close the guard.

Tools: Spanners, Rule, Chain splitter

Shear bolt and overload protection check

Drive · every year

Krone supplies spare shear bolts, shear bushings and locknuts in the tool box on the ladder. The overload devices must not be altered, and a non-Krone device voids the warranty.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Shear bushings and locknuts1Spares in the tool box. Check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
  2. Check the tool box on the ladder holds spare shear bolts, shear bushings and locknuts.
  3. Only ever fit genuine Krone shear bolts of the right grade.
  4. If an overload device keeps tripping, switch off the PTO and clear the cause. Don't let it slip for long or it wears early.

Tools: Spanners

Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
  2. Check the oil level in every gearbox and the compressor.
  3. Grease to the lubrication chart, two strokes per nipple.
  4. Tighten bolts and wheel nuts, check tyre pressures and look the tyres over for cuts.
  5. Vent the flywheel friction clutch.
  6. Tighten the drawbar eye bolts and check the drawbar eye for wear against its limit.
  7. Look over the pick-up tines and replace any that are broken. No tine part number was found: check your handbook.

Tools: Grease gun, Torque wrench, Tyre pressure gauge

Air brake tanks and cylinders (dealer)

Brakes · every 2 years

Krone says the compressed air tanks must be checked and the brake cylinders serviced by a Krone service partner every 2 years.

Step-by-step
  1. Book the baler in with a Krone dealer to have the air tanks checked and the brake cylinders serviced.

Known problems

Overload devices are factory set

Don't alter the cam, ratchet or friction clutches. If one keeps tripping, switch off the PTO and clear the cause.

Never mix oils

Krone warns not to mix oils of different specs. Ask a Krone dealer before changing to a different oil.

Gearbox quantities are guides

Fill each gearbox to its level mark, not by the litre figure.

Repair guides
