Main gearbox oil level check

Gearbox · every 10 hours

Krone's maintenance table has the main gearbox oil level in the every-10-hours, at-least-daily list. The gearbox is behind the drawbar at the front of the machine. Check only with the machine level.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear oil (top-up)1SAE 90 gear oil, 2.00 L in the whole gearbox. Krone names no other spec: check your handbook. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park the baler level, stop the PTO and the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
  2. Take the locking screw out of the inspection and filling hole on the side of the main gearbox.
  3. The oil should come up to the hole. If it does, refit the screw and tighten it to the torque in the handbook.
  4. If the oil is low, top up through the same hole until it reaches the hole, then refit the screw.

Central chain lubrication: oil level, filter and dosing units

Chains and lubrication · every 10 hours

The oil reservoir holds 7.00 L of SAE 10W-40. Krone has the dosing units checked and cleaned every 10 hours or daily, and the oil filter changed before each season.

Step-by-step
  1. Read the oil level on the reservoir and top up through the opening if low.
  2. If the reservoir ran empty, top it up, take the hose off the pump connection until oil runs out, refit it, open the bleed screw and pump by hand until oil flows from the control block without bubbles, then close the screw.
  3. To change the filter, wait until the reservoir is mostly empty, take off the cover, lift out the filter, fit a new one, refit the cover and refill.
  4. For a blocked dosing unit, undo the cap nut, take the dosing unit out of the distributor block, remove the cap, take out the spring and shut-off valve, clean them (not the rubber seals with strong cleaner), then refit hand-tight.
  5. The distributor blocks are on the right and left behind the front side hoods.

PTO shaft greasing

PTO shaft · every 50 hours

Krone's table gives the grease amount per point (18 g, 30 g, 20 g and 6 g) and a 50-hour interval for the first point. The intervals for the other points are not readable in the text I could see: follow the table in your PTO shaft maker's handbook.

Wheel nuts and tyre pressure

Tyres and wheels · every 50 hours

Krone has the wheel nuts retightened after the first 10 hours and every 50 hours, and the tyre pressure checked at the same times. Tighten crosswise with a torque wrench.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground with the PTO off and the baler secured.
  2. Retighten the wheel nuts crosswise to the torque in the spec list for your nut size. Do it once after the first 10 hours, then every 50 hours.
  3. Check the tyre pressures against the table in your handbook (it is in the technical data chapter).
  4. Look for cuts and bulges.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre pressure gauge, Tyre inflator

Main gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every 500 hours

Krone says change the main gearbox oil once after the first 50 hours, then every 500 hours. The gearbox takes 2.00 L of SAE 90. There is no filter.

Known problems

Compressed air brake

The air tanks need their condensation drained every 50 hours and before and after the season. The tanks and the brake cylinders have to be inspected by a Krone service partner every 2 years.

Wrapping brake disc

The brake disc axial play is 1 to 2 mm. The disc needs preparing before the season and protecting from rust after it.

Do not mix greases

Krone warns that unapproved greases or mixing greases can damage the bearings. Do not use graphite grease.
