Service jobs and parts
Blade, blade bolt and leaf spring check
Blades and skids · every 10 hours
Krone says inspect the cutter blades, leaf springs (quick-fit) and cutting discs at least once a day and after hitting anything. A missing or damaged blade or retainer can be thrown out and kill.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cutter blade, clockwise | 1 | Genuine Krone. Replace the whole set on a disc if one is missing or damaged | 139-889 |
| Cutter blade, anticlockwise | 1 | Genuine Krone. Replace the whole set on a disc if one is missing or damaged | 139-888 |
| Blade retaining bolt | 1 | Per blade if worn under 14 mm, as a full set per disc or drum. Genuine Krone: check your handbook or dealer | check your handbook |
| Locknut | 1 | Screw-on blades only: Krone says a locknut must never be used twice | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the mower to the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Stay in the cab until every disc and drum has stopped: they run on after the PTO is off.
- Fold up the protective device and lock it with its spring cotter pin.
- Check every blade. Turn a blunt blade over to use its other edge. Replace it when it reaches the wear mark (dimension a, 13 mm, in the handbook figure).
- If any blade is missing or damaged, replace the whole set on that disc or drum so it stays balanced.
- Check the retaining bolts at every blade change and after hitting an object. Replace any bolt under 14 mm at the thinnest point, as a full set per disc or drum.
- Quick-fit models: check the leaf springs. They are worn out when the contact seam is worn through at any point. Replace with genuine Krone parts only.
- Check the cutting discs and drums. Replace any that is bent (dimension A over 48 mm) or worn to under 3 mm of material.
- Fitting a blade (screw-on): put it between the wear skid and the disc, push the bolt up from below and fit a new locknut from above. Tighten it to the torque in the handbook's Torques chapter.
- Fitting a blade (quick-fit): push the blade key between the disc and leaf spring, press it down, slide the blade onto the bolt and let the key back up.
- Clockwise and anticlockwise blades differ: the arrow on the blade must match the disc's direction of rotation.
- Fold the protective device back down and lock it before starting.
Tools: Krone blade key (quick-fit models), Socket and torque wrench, Vernier caliper, Gloves, Spring cotter pin for the guard
Cutterbar oil level check
Gearbox · every 10 hours
Krone says check the cutterbar oil level before every use. It also says no oil change is needed on the cutterbar, so there is no change interval. Top up with SAE 90 only.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil SAE 90 | 1 | Top up only. Full fill: 280 / F 280 6.0 L, 320 / F 320 7.0 L, F 360 8.0 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Run the mower briefly, then stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
- Rear mower: raise the cutterbar into transport position. Front mower: set the cutterbar level, with a spirit level across the disc hub (along the direction of travel) and along two discs.
- Remove the oil level inspection screw on the cutterbar.
- The oil should reach the hole. If not, top up with SAE 90.
- Refit the screw and tighten it securely.
Tools: Spanner or Allen key for the level screw, Spirit level (front mowers), Funnel or oil pump, Rag
Cutterbar linings and skids check
Blades and skids · every 10 hours
Krone: check the cutterbar for damaged linings (wear plates) before every start-up and replace damaged ones, or the cutterbar itself wears. Linings are welded on. Raised skids for a higher cut are an option.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cutterbar lining | 1 | If damaged. Genuine Krone: check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
- Look at the linings on the underside of the cutterbar and the wear skids under the discs for holes and heavy wear.
- To replace a lining: grind open the old welds, take it off and deburr the face.
- Fit the new lining. On top of the cutterbar weld short seams of about 30 mm in the marked areas; underneath weld it along its full length. Do not weld the edges.
- Set the welding current and rod to suit the materials, and try a test weld first.
Tools: Welder (for replacement), Grinder, Wire brush
Nut and bolt tightness check
Frame · every 50 hours
Krone says check nuts and bolts are tight about every 50 hours and retighten where needed, using the torque tables in the handbook.
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
- Check all nuts and bolts, especially on the cutterbar, guards and headstock.
- Retighten to the handbook values. For 8.8 bolts: M8 25 Nm, M10 49 Nm, M12 85 Nm, M16 210 Nm.
- Deviating torques listed for the cutting disc flange nut, the shear protection nut and the disc and drum bearing housings are 850, 300, 50 and 50 Nm; check the handbook table before using them.
Tools: Torque wrench, Socket set
Gearbox oil change (all gearboxes)
Gearbox · every 200 hours or every year
Krone: change the oil in all gearboxes first after 50 hours, then every 200 hours and at least once a year. Check the levels before each use. The cutterbar is not changed. There is no filter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil SAE 90 | 1 | Front: angular gearbox 1.0 L (F 280/F 360) or 0.5 L (M models), mower drive gearbox 0.4 L (F 280 M/F 320 M) or 0.9 L (F 360 M). Rear: 0.5 L and 0.3 L for the main and mower drive gearboxes (check your handbook for which). Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Run the machine briefly, stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until everything has stopped. Stand the mower level.
- Rear main gearbox: remove the drain plug, catch the oil, refit the plug and fill through the filler.
- Mower drive gearbox: remove the drain plug, catch the oil, refit it and fill through the filler until the oil reaches the check hole. Refit the check screw.
- Front angular gearbox: it has no separate filler. Remove the inspection screw, drain the oil, then fill through the same hole until oil reaches it, and refit the screw.
- Use SAE 90 only. If you use biodegradable oil, keep strictly to the intervals because it ages.
- Dispose of the old oil properly.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Funnel
Drive belt tension (F models, not M)
Drive · every year
The front F 280/320/360 drive the cutterbar by V-belts tensioned by a spring. Krone lists a drive belt check in its maintenance table and gives the spring setting. The M models have a gearbox instead.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive V-belts | 1 | If worn. Genuine Krone: check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
- Check the belts for cracks, fraying and glazing.
- Slacken the lock nut on the tensioner and set the compression spring to dimension a = 205 mm.
- Lock the nuts again.
Tools: Spanners, Steel rule
Friction clutch venting
PTO shaft · every year
Krone: vent (free off) the friction clutch before first use and once a year before harvest, so it works when needed. Do not alter it: that changes the slip torque and voids the warranty.
Step-by-step
- Stop the tractor, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
- Tighten the four nuts on the clutch so the springs are relieved.
- Block the machine so the drive cannot turn.
- Turn the friction clutch by hand until it slips.
- Undo the four nuts again to their original position. Do not change the clutch setting.
Tools: Spanner for the four nuts, Chocks or a bar to block the machine
Putting into storage
Storage · every year
Krone's storage list.
Step-by-step
- Clean the machine inside and out. Do not aim a pressure washer at bearings.
- Grease all lubrication points and leave the grease that seeps out of the bearings.
- Pull the PTO shaft apart, grease the inner tubes and guard tube, the cross joints and the guard bearing rings.
- Oil all joints.
- Touch up paint and coat bare metal with rust preventer.
- Check rollers, joints and tensioners move freely; replace worn parts.
- Store it in a dry place, away from fertiliser and livestock buildings.
- Make a list of parts needed so your dealer can get them before next season.
Tools: Pressure washer, Grease gun, Oil can, Rust preventer, Touch-up paint

Known problems
Discs run on
Krone warns the discs and drums keep turning after the PTO stops. Stay in the cab until they have stopped.
Locknuts are one use only
On screw-on blades the locknut must never be reused.
Wrong-hand blades
Clockwise and anticlockwise blades are different. A blade fitted the wrong way cuts badly and wears fast.
Friction clutch left seized
If the clutch is not freed off each year it may not slip when it should, and the drive takes the shock.
Repair guides
- Blades, blade retaining bolts and quick-fit leaf springs (Easy, 30 minutes to 2 hours): Ragged or uneven cut, a missing or broken blade, vibration from one disc, blades fitted the wrong hand, or worn retaining bolts or leaf springs.
- Disc stopped after a strike: rotary hub shear pins (Moderate, 1–2 hours per disc): After hitting a stone one disc or drum stops turning or rides up on its shaft while the others keep going (machines with the optional rotary hub shear fuse).
- Friction clutch slipping or seized (Easy, 30 minutes): The friction clutch on the PTO shaft slips and smells hot, or has rusted solid over winter so a strike goes straight through the drive.
- Cutterbar noise, vibration or heat: oil level, discs and linings (Moderate, 1–3 hours; linings longer): The cutterbar knocks, rumbles or vibrates, runs hot, or the underside linings are worn through.
- Pole protection (breakaway) tripping or not tripping (Easy, 30 minutes): The mower swings back too easily, swings back in transport, or does not release when it hits a post.
