Service jobs and parts
PTO shaft and grease points
PTO shaft · every 8 hours
Krone's lubrication figure gives 8, 20 and 40-hour points on the PTO shaft and tedder. The figure couldn't be read, so this task is set at the shortest, 8 hours; follow the figure in your handbook for the 20 and 40-hour points.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | Multi-purpose | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the tedder in work position, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
- Grease the 8-hour points on the lubrication figure: the PTO shaft joints first.
- Grease the 20 and 40-hour points when due, as the figure shows.
- Follow the PTO shaft maker's own instructions too.
- Check the guard is complete and chained, and the tubes still overlap properly.
Tools: Grease gun, Rags
Tine bolt check
Tines · every 10 hours
Krone: check the tine bolts after the first hours of work, tighten to 95 Nm if needed, then check them daily. Set here at 10 hours as a working day.
Step-by-step
- Lower the tedder in work position, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
- Check each tine bolt and tighten any loose one to 95 Nm.
- On a new tedder or after fitting new tines, do this after the first few hours.
Tools: Torque wrench (to 95 Nm), Spanners, Gloves
Tine replacement and tine angle
Tines · every year
Broken or bent tines are thrown into the crop. Krone says the tines must stand square to the ground, set by an eccentric locked with a 95 Nm screw. Clockwise and anticlockwise rotors take different tines.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tine, clockwise (green), KW 5.52/4x7 | 1 | As needed. UK Krone dealer lists it for KW 4.62, 5.52, 6.72, 7.82, 8.82 and 10.02 | 1530143 |
| Tine, anticlockwise (beige), KW 5.52/4x7 | 1 | As needed. Partner of 1530143 | 1530152 |
| Tine, KW 5.50 (older) | 1 | Sparex sells pattern tines as fitting Krone 1530141 (right) and 1530151 (left) for older KW models. Check against your machine number with a Krone dealer | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the tedder in work position, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
- Wear gloves. Check every tine for cracks and bends, and every tine arm for bends.
- Replace damaged tines with the type for that rotor's direction and torque the bolt to 95 Nm.
- Check the tines stand square to the ground. If not, undo the securing bolt, turn the eccentric to the next position and tighten the adjusting screw to 95 Nm.
Tools: Torque wrench (to 95 Nm), Spanners, Gloves
Winter storage
Storage · every year
Krone's winter storage list.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rust preventer | 1 | For bare metal | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the tedder, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
- Clean it thoroughly: dirt holds moisture. Don't aim a pressure washer at the bearings.
- Check moving parts and joints move freely. Take off, clean and check worn ones and replace them if needed.
- Oil all joints and grease the whole machine.
- Grease the PTO shaft guard tubes so they don't freeze together.
- Touch up the paint and coat bare metal with rust preventer.
- Only jack it with a suitable jack and support it securely.
- Store it somewhere dry, away from fertiliser.
- List the spare parts you need and order them in good time.
Tools: Grease gun, Oil can, Brush, Touch-up paint, Jack
Start-up after winter storage
Storage · every year
Krone's start-up list. The main gearbox is grease-filled for life (GFO 35, 0.5 L), so just look for leaks.
Step-by-step
- Wipe off the preserving grease and oil.
- Do every job in the maintenance chapter: tine bolts at 95 Nm, all grease points, guards.
- Check the tyre pressures (1.5 / 2.0 bar as the technical data gives) and that the wheel nuts are tight.
- Check the main gearbox for grease leaks.
- Read the operating instructions through again.
Tools: Tyre pressure gauge, Torque wrench (to 95 Nm), Grease gun, Rags

Thrown tines
Krone asks for a daily tine bolt check. A tine-loss cable kit is sold as an accessory if the crop goes to a forage harvester or wrapper.
Which handbook
The KW 5.50 and 5.52 use different tines. Check your machine number against the handbook and parts book before ordering.
Repair guides
- Tine breakage: tine bolts, tine angle and working depth (Easy, 30 minutes to 2 hours): Tines breaking, bending or being thrown out, tines not standing square to the ground, or crop contaminated with soil.
- Poor spreading, crop damage and PTO shaft checks (Easy, 30 minutes): Crop not spread evenly, dry crop shattered, crop thrown over the boundary, or the PTO shaft or guard catching.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your implement.
