Air cleaner primary element clean
Engine · every 100 hours or every year
The handbook says clean the primary element every 100 hours and replace it once a year or after six cleanings. Replace the secondary element yearly. The evacuator valve needs squeezing weekly, or daily in dust.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary (outer) air element | 1 | Replace yearly or after 6 cleanings | TA040-93230 |
| Secondary (inner) air element | 1 | Replace yearly; number from Kubota's parts list for the L4240GST | TA040-93220 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine without the element.
- Remove the cover and primary element. Leave the secondary element alone unless replacing it.
- Dry dust: blow out from the inside with air under 205 kPa (30 psi), turning the element.
- Oily or sooty: soak 15 minutes in detergent, rinse well in clean water and let it dry naturally.
- Check it with a torch inside for damage. Never oil this dry element.
- Refit the cover with the arrow pointing up so the evacuator valve works.
Tools: Compressed air (under 205 kPa / 30 psi), Torch, Mild detergent, Dust mask
Fuel filter bowl and element clean
Fuel · every 100 hours
The handbook says clean the fuel filter bowl and element every 100 hours. Dirt in the fuel wears the injection pump and nozzles.
Step-by-step
- Do this somewhere clean, not out in the field. Stop the engine, take the key out and keep flames away.
- Close the fuel tap.
- Unscrew the ring, take off the filter bowl and rinse it out with kerosene.
- Take out the element and rinse it in kerosene.
- Reassemble with the O-ring and spring in place, keeping dirt out.
- Open the fuel tap and bleed the fuel system as shown under Service As Required.
Tools: Clean tray, Kerosene (paraffin), Rags
Fan belt, clutch and brake pedal adjustment
Engine · every 100 hours
These checks are in the handbook's 100-hour group. Fan belt deflection 7–9 mm; clutch pedal free travel 20–30 mm (models with a clutch pedal); brake pedal free travel 15–20 mm, equal on both sides.

Known problems
Jerky high/low range change
Owners of HST models report a jerk when shifting between low and high range. The change is electro-hydraulic and a dealer can soften it.
Hard cold starting
Some owners report the tractor will not start in cold weather without the block heater; one says some tractors had the wrong relays. Check the glow plug circuit first.
Leaking internal seals
One owner had a failed internal seal at about 1,350 hours that meant splitting the tractor. Watch for leaks at the joints between engine, gearbox and axle.
Genuine filters only
The handbook warns that non-genuine engine, hydraulic or HST filters can cause serious damage. Use the right Kubota filter for HST or GST models.
HST filter more often than the fluid
On HST models the HST filter is due every 200 hours, but the fluid only every 400 hours. It is easy to miss.
Repair guides
- Jerky high/low range change (HST) (Specialist, 30 minutes for owner checks): A jolt or jerk when the H-DS Hi-Lo range changes, Hi range will not select, ERROR-92 MOTOR NG on the display, Auto H-DS or Stall Guard modes missing.
- HST weak, no drive or creeping (Specialist, 1–2 hours for owner checks): Tractor slow to move or weak on hills, will not move in one direction, creeps with the foot off the pedal, transmission oil getting very hot, HST error on the display.
- Hard cold starting, glow plugs, starter and charging (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Will not start in cold weather without the block heater, glow lamp goes out but engine will not fire, slow cranking, clicking, charge lamp on with the engine running.
- Oil leaks between engine, gearbox and axle; water in the clutch housing (Hard, 30 minutes to diagnose; a split for an internal seal is a day or more): Oil dripping from the joint between engine and clutch housing or between gearbox and rear axle, transmission level dropping, engine oil mixing with transmission fluid, water found in the clutch housing after washing or rain.
- Bleeding the fuel system and checking injectors (Moderate, 30 minutes to bleed; 2–3 hours to remove and test injectors): Engine stops or will not start after a filter change or running dry, misfiring, white or blue-white smoke, knocking, loss of power.
- Overheating: thermostat, radiator cap, fan belt and water pump (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Temperature gauge high or overheat lamp, coolant loss, steam, engine slow to warm, squealing fan belt, coolant weeping from the water pump.
- Brake adjustment and worn brake discs (Hard, 30 minutes to adjust; a day to inspect the brake discs): Long pedal travel, tractor pulls to one side, brakes weak or noisy, pedals uneven when latched, parking brake will not hold.
- Clutch pedal adjustment (GST and manual models) (Easy, 30 minutes): Clutch slips under load, gears grind or the tractor creeps with the pedal down, pedal has no free play or too much.
- Three-point linkage slow, weak or will not lift (Moderate, 1–2 hours for owner checks): Linkage lifts slowly or not at all, cannot lift a load it used to, drops too fast or will not lower, relief valve squeals, remote valves weak.
- Front wheel shake, pivot play and toe-in (4WD) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Front wheels shake and the steering wheel shudders, knocking from the front axle, steering wanders, front tyres wearing on the edges, oil leaking from the axle.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
