Service jobs and parts

Air cleaner primary element clean

Engine · every 100 hours or every year

The handbook says clean the primary element every 100 hours and replace it once a year or after six cleanings. Replace the secondary element yearly. Squeeze the evacuator valve weekly, or daily in dust.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Primary (outer) air element, L4740–L57401Kubota number listed by a filter seller for L4740, L5040, L5240 and L5740; L3540 and L3940 use the smaller TA040-93230 (as kubota-l4240)59800-26110

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine without the element.
  2. Remove the cover and primary element. Leave the secondary element alone unless replacing it.
  3. Dry dust: blow out from the inside with air under 205 kPa (30 psi), turning the element.
  4. Oily or sooty: soak 15 minutes in detergent, rinse well in clean water and let it dry naturally.
  5. Check it with a torch inside for damage. Never oil this dry element.
  6. Refit the cover with the arrow pointing up so the evacuator valve works.

Tools: Compressed air (under 205 kPa / 30 psi), Torch, Mild detergent, Dust mask

Fuel filter bowl and element clean

Fuel · every 100 hours

The handbook says clean the fuel filter bowl and element every 100 hours. Dirt in the fuel wears the injection pump and nozzles.

Step-by-step
  1. Do this somewhere clean, not out in the field. Stop the engine, take the key out and keep flames away.
  2. Close the fuel tap, unscrew the ring and take off the bowl. Rinse the bowl and element in kerosene.
  3. Reassemble with the O-ring and spring in place, keeping dirt out.
  4. Open the fuel tap and bleed the fuel system.

Tools: Clean tray, Kerosene (paraffin), Rags

Fan belt, clutch and brake pedal adjustment

Engine · every 100 hours

These checks are in the handbook's 100-hour group. Fan belt deflection 7–9 mm; clutch pedal free travel 20–30 mm (gear models); brake pedal free travel 15–20 mm, equal on both sides.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Fan belt1Replace if damaged; check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Press the fan belt halfway between the pulleys: it should move 7–9 mm. To adjust, loosen the alternator bolts, lever the alternator out and retighten.
  3. Clutch (where fitted): measure free travel at the top of the pedal: 20–30 mm. Adjust the rod length at the clevis, tighten the lock nut and fit a new split pin.
  4. Brakes: release the parking brake and measure each pedal's free travel: 15–20 mm, the same both sides. Adjust with the turnbuckle and tighten the lock nut.

Tools: Spanners, Rule, Lever bar, Wheel chocks

Radiator hoses, intake and HST lines check

Cooling · every 200 hours or every 6 months

The handbook says check the radiator hoses and clamps every 200 hours or 6 months, and replace them every 2 years or sooner if swollen, hard or cracked. Check the intake air line, HST and power steering lines at the same time.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Radiator hoses and clamps1Replace every 2 years; check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine; hot coolant scalds.
  2. Tighten any loose clamps. Replace hoses that are swollen, hard or cracked.
  3. Check the intake air hoses, HST oil lines and power steering hoses for damage and tightness.

Tools: Screwdriver, Torch

  5. Fill to the upper notch on the dipstick with the amount for your model.
  6. Run the engine briefly, check for leaks at the filter, stop it and top up to the upper notch.

Front axle pivot adjustment

Front axle · every 600 hours

A badly adjusted front axle pivot causes front wheel shake felt through the steering. The handbook lists this every 600 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Loosen the lock nut, tighten the adjusting screw all the way, then back it off 1/6 of a turn.

Known problems

Capacities differ by model

The 3-cylinder L3540 and the turbo L5040–L5740 take different amounts of engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid from the L3940 and L4740. Use the figure for your model.

HST filter more often than the fluid

On HST models the HST filter is due every 200 hours, but the fluid only every 400 hours. It is easy to miss.

Genuine filters only

The handbook warns that non-genuine engine, hydraulic or HST filters can cause serious damage. Kubota's own service kit for the L5240/L5740 HST is W27TK00026.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
