Service jobs and parts
Greasing (named points)
Chassis · every 50 hours
Kubota says grease every 50 hours, and more often in very wet or muddy work. Grease fittings: cargo lift cylinder pivot, VHT link, front and rear A-arms. Spray grease: parking brake lever and link, bed pivot, valve, 4WD, range and unload links, diff lock pedal.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multipurpose EP2 grease (NLGI 2) | 1 | Plus anti-rust silicone grease where the manual says. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park, stop the engine and take the key out. Raise the bed only with the safety support fitted.
- Grease the nipples on the cargo lift cylinder pivot, VHT link and front and rear A-arms until grease shows.
- Spray-grease the linkages and pivots listed and smear the battery terminals.
- Wipe off surplus grease.
Tools: Grease gun, Spray grease
Air cleaner elements clean and replace
Engine · every 100 hours or every year
Kubota says clean the primary element every 100 hours (more often in dust) and replace both primary and secondary elements every 1,000 hours or yearly. It is a dry element: never oil it.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cleaner primary (outer) element | 1 | Kubota number as listed by filter kit sellers; confirm with your dealer | 1G319-11210 |
| Air cleaner secondary (inner) element | 1 | Kubota number as listed by filter kit sellers; replace only at the yearly / 1,000-hour change | K7591-82360 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out.
- Open the cover and take out the primary element. Do not touch the secondary element unless replacing it.
- Blow dry dust off from the inside out at under 205 kPa (2.1 kgf/cm²), turning the element. If it has oil or soot on it, replace it.
- Check the rubber seal and the evacuator valve. Refit the cover with the arrow on the back upright, or the valve will not work.
- Open the evacuator valve weekly, or daily in dust. Never run the engine without the element.
Tools: Compressed air under 205 kPa, Rag
Alternator belt tension check
Engine · every 100 hours
Kubota says adjust the alternator belt every 100 hours. It should deflect 7–9 mm when pressed in the middle.
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out before touching the belt.
- Press the belt midway between the fan pulley and alternator: it should move 7–9 mm.
- If not, loosen the alternator mounting bolts, move it to set the tension and retighten.
- Replace the belt if it is cracked or damaged.
Tools: Ruler, Spanners
Engine oil and filter change

Step-by-step
- Park on a level surface. Raise the cargo bed and fit the safety support before reaching underneath.
- Stop the engine and let it cool enough to handle. Warm oil drains best but hot oil burns.
- Remove the rear skid plate, then the drain plug, and drain the oil fully.
- Remove the old filter. Oil the rubber seal of the new one, screw it on until it touches, then a further half turn by hand only.
- Refit the drain plug and fill to the upper line on the dipstick (about 3.1 L).
- Run briefly, check the filter seal for leaks, stop and top up to the mark. Refit the skid plate and lower the bed.

Step-by-step
- Park on a level surface, stop the engine and let it cool. Hot oil burns.
- Open the seat and remove the rubber cap. Remove the drain plug and filling plug and drain the oil fully.
- Remove the rear guard. Remove the yellow VHT filter and the black suction filter.
- Put a film of clean fluid on each new filter seal, screw on until it touches, then a further half turn with a filter wrench.
- Refit the drain plug and fill with SUPER UDT to the upper line on the dipstick (check with the dipstick screwed in).

Known problems
Mixing hydraulic fluid brands
Kubota says do not mix different brands of transmission fluid in this machine, because the hydraulic tank oil also drives the VHT transmission.
Cold-weather transmission
Kubota's manual has a separate warm-up procedure for transmission oil in low temperatures. Driving off cold can strain the VHT.
Wrong engine oil
CJ-4 oil is for DPF engines and must not be used. On high-sulphur fuel use CF oil with a high TBN or halve the oil change interval.
Engine start safety switch
Every 50 hours check the engine will not crank with the range lever in H, L or R. If it does, do not use the machine until a dealer has fixed it.
Muffler soot
Kubota says purge carbon from the muffler every 100 hours by removing its drain plug.
Repair guides
- VHT (hydrostatic) drive faults: owner checks before calling the dealer (Specialist, 1 hour for the checks): Jerky or rough drive, will not move with the engine running, creeps when the pedal is released, VHT oil overheating, sluggish when cold.
- Engine cranks in gear: test the start safety switches (Moderate, 15 minutes to test): Engine turns over with the range lever in a gear, or with the hydraulic outlet lever on. The machine could lurch as it starts.
- Muffler full of soot: purge the spark arrester muffler (Easy, 20 minutes): Black soot from the exhaust, loss of power, sooty deposits at the muffler drain, or the 100-hour purge is due.
- Air in the fuel after running dry or a filter change: bleed and check the fuel line (Easy, 15–30 minutes): Engine will not start or dies soon after starting following a filter change, running the tank dry, disturbing fuel lines or a long lay-up.
- Wet disc brakes: wrong fluid, pedal travel and leak checks (Specialist, 30 minutes for the checks; flushing and seals are dealer jobs): Spongy or long pedal, brakes weak, fluid low, brake fluid of the wrong type has gone in, or fluid found at the front brake case drain plug (RTV900).
- Toe-in and tie-rods: check and adjust (Easy, 45 minutes): Front tyres wearing on the edges or scrubbing, steering wanders, after replacing a tie-rod end or hitting something with a front wheel.
- Hydraulic tipping bed slow, hot or will not lift: checks, oil and safe working (Moderate, 1 hour): Bed lifts slowly or not at all, hydraulic oil gets hot, bed creeps down, oil leaking at the lift cylinder or hoses.
