Service jobs and parts
Bolted connection check
General · every 30 hours or every year
Kuhn: on a new spreader check all bolts every 30 hours, as vibration loosens them early on, and always before the season. Weigh-cell bolts (W models) are 300 Nm before each season.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-locking nuts | 1 | New whenever a part held by them is refitted | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Check every bolted connection is tight.
- W models: tighten the two bolts on each weigh cell and the tie rod bolt to 300 Nm.
- Use new self-locking nuts on anything refitted, such as vanes.
Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench (to 300 Nm)
Wear parts, vanes and disc hub check
Discs · every year
Kuhn lists the vanes, agitator head, outlet and hydraulic pipes as wear parts: replace them if worn, bent or holed, or the pattern goes wrong. Vanes must match the disc and should be changed by a dealer.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spreading blades (pair) | 1 | Genuine Kuhn numbers per Partao listings; which blade is left- or right-hand and the exact Axis version are not stated, so check your parts book before ordering | R3050162 / R3050058 |
| Spreading vanes | 1 | Must match the disc type and length printed on them; check your handbook or dealer | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Take off the spreading discs.
- Check the vanes, agitator heads and outlets for wear, deformation or holes.
- Check each disc hub is centred under its agitator within 2 mm, and the gap from the hub top to the agitator bottom is 136.5 mm ± 2 mm. Call the dealer if not.
- When fitting vanes, check the type and length marked on the new one match the old one.
Tools: Straight edge, Rule
Agitator drive check
Hopper · every year
The agitator should turn at 15–20 rpm at 540 PTO rpm with a full hopper. Outside that range, check it for wear. With an empty hopper it may not reach speed even when sound.
Step-by-step
- With the tractor off, key out and the spreader on the ground, open the hopper grid with the special tool.
- Check the agitator heads and connecting rods for wear and that both turn the same way as their discs.
- Check the grid interlock works. Close and lock the grid before running.
Tools: Stopwatch
Calibration test
Calibration · every year
Kuhn: run a calibration test before first use, when the fertiliser changes, or when its quality changes (damp, dusty, broken grains). Do it with the PTO on, standing or over a test run, on one side with both discs off.
Step-by-step
- Work out your true speed: drive the half-full spreader 100 m in the field, time it and read the speed off the calibration calculator.
- Close the slides, stop the tractor and take the key out. Loosen the cap nuts with the adjusting lever and take off both discs.
- Set the drop point to 0. Fit the chute under the left outlet and set the slide stop from the chart.
- Run the PTO at the chart speed and open the slide for the chart time. Weigh the fertiliser and compare with the target. Adjust and repeat.
- Wear goggles. Q models do the test through the control box.
Tools: Calibration chute (stowed behind the disc guard), Bin holding at least 25 kg, Scales, Stopwatch
Cleaning and lubrication
General · every year
Kuhn recommends washing the spreader with a gentle water spray straight after each job, then treating it with anti-corrosion agent when dry, especially the vanes and stainless parts.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-corrosion agent | 1 | check your handbook | |
| Grease, graphite grease, oil | 1 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Fold up the hopper grids. Clean the outlets and slide guides from below only.
- Never aim a high-pressure jet at decals, electrics, hydraulics or slide bearings.
- When dry, treat with an environmentally safe anti-corrosion agent.
- Grease the disc hubs and lower link bearings, put graphite grease on the metering slide pivots, and oil the drop point adjustment and agitator joints.
Tools: Hose, Grease gun, Oil can
Gearbox oil change
Gearbox · every 10 years
Kuhn: the gearbox is lubricated for life in normal use, but change the oil after 10 years, sooner if you spread dusty fertiliser or wash the spreader often. There is no filter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | CLP 460 (SAE 140 GL-4); ≈5.5 L (20.1/30.1/40.1) or ≈10.5 L (50.1 W). Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 140 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and tractor and take the key out.
- Tilt the spreader sideways about 200 mm and put an 11 L tray under the drain screw.
- Undo the drain screw, let it drain fully and refit it.
- Level the spreader. Open the filler and check screws and fill with SAE 140 GL-4 until oil reaches the lower edge of the check hole.
- Refit both screws. Never mix oil types.
Tools: Drain tray (11 L), Spanners, Funnel

Known problems
Axis .2 and later
This entry is from the Axis 20.1–50.1 W manual. Later models differ; check your handbook.
Repair guides
- Uneven spreading and striping (Moderate, 1–2 hours plus a test): Stripes in the crop, too much fertiliser in the tractor wheelings or in the overlap, or uneven spread across the bout.
- Hopper emptying unevenly: bridging and agitator faults (Moderate, 1–2 hours): One side spreads more than the other, one side of the hopper empties faster, fertiliser feed to a disc is irregular, or an agitator does not turn.
- Metering slides not opening, slow or uneven (Moderate, 1–2 hours): A metering slide will not open, opens slowly, or the two sides deliver different amounts at the same setting.
- Blocked outlets and discs not turning (Easy, 30 minutes to 1 hour): No fertiliser from one side, outlet packed with lumps, leaves or bag scraps, or the discs do not turn or stop suddenly after switching on.
- Spreading disc hub position and vane replacement (Specialist, 1–2 hours to check): Spread pattern wrong after a knock, a disc hub sits off-centre under the agitator, or worn, bent or holed vanes.
