Service jobs and parts

Knife, bolt and nut check

Blades and skids · every 10 hours

Kuhn: inspect all knives before using the machine. Check the securing elements after hitting an obstacle, when changing knives and at the start of each season. Always change both knives on a disc, never straighten a bent knife, and use genuine Kuhn parts. Torque the knife bolt to 120 N·m.

Knife fixing bolt and lock-nut1Replace if the shoulder is under 11 mm, the head is worn to the centre line or the locking compound has worn out. Genuine Kuhn: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Put the mower in transport position, switch off the PTO and the engine, take the key out, apply the park brake and wait for everything to stop.
  2. Check each knife. Replace it if worn, cracked or bent, shorter than 80 mm, or narrower than 34 mm measured 10 mm from the disc edge. You can turn a knife over once to use the other cutting edge.
  3. Tap the ground residue out from between the knife and the screw with a mallet and clean the cavities between the disc and the spring plate.
  4. Fully insert the special tool between the disc and the spring plate and pivot it down to free the spring plate from the screw head.
  5. Check the bolt and nut. Replace them if the bolt shoulder is under 11 mm, the head is worn to the centre line or the locking compound no longer grips.
  6. Fit the new knife with the arrow matching the disc rotation. Tighten the securing nut to 120 N·m.
  7. Check the knife locks and swings freely on the screw head, then turn the disc half a turn and repeat on the other discs.

Tools: Kuhn knife tool (supplied), Torque wrench (to 120 N·m), Mallet, Rule, Gloves

PTO shaft greasing

PTO shaft · every 20 hours

Kuhn: grease the intermediate PTO shafts every 20 hours (universal joints, transmission tube and guide rings) and the primary PTO shaft and its universal joint every 50 hours. This task uses the shorter 20 hours. Use multi-purpose NLGI 2 grease and clean the nipples first.

Drawbar and cylinder greasing

Chassis · every 50 hours

Conditioning rotor fingers

Conditioner · every 100 hours

Kuhn: replace worn or damaged conditioning fingers straight away, with original parts, in the right mounting order. Fit the roll pins 180 degrees apart with the slots lined up with the main load, and keep the short and long fingers in the right positions so they do not touch the cutterbar. The manual gives no hour interval, so this entry uses 100 hours; Kuhn also lists it for end of season and start of season.

Cutterbar oil change

Kuhn says the cutterbar is lubricated for life and needs no regular oil change. Drain and refill if you are unsure of the quantity, after any repair, or if there is an oil leak. The storage page also says to drain and refill all gearboxes at the end of the season, so this entry uses once a year. There is no filter.

Knife bolts

Kuhn says to replace a bolt if the locking compound is worn, if the shoulder is under 11 mm or if the head is worn to the centre line.
