PTO shafts and torque limiter lubrication
PTO shaft · every 50 hours
Kuhn: grease the primary and intermediate PTO shafts every 50 hours, including the torque limiter and the constant velocity joint, and more often in hard use.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | Multi-purpose NLGI 2. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Put the rake in work position on the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake. Wait until both rotors have stopped.
- Check the hydraulic hose taps are shut.
- Primary shaft: grease the universal joints, the constant velocity joint (with the shaft straight), the torque limiter, the transmission tube, the guide rings and the locking pins.
- Intermediate shaft: grease the universal joints, the central discs, the transmission tube, the guide rings and the push-rods.
- Check the guards are complete and chained. Never run a shaft at more than 30°.

Wheel nut, tine screw and gearbox level check
Tines · every 50 hours
Kuhn's chart has 'check the gearbox oil level' and 'check the securing elements' with intervals of the first 10 hours, every 50 hours and every 200 hours, but the scan doesn't show which goes where. Set here at the shorter 50 hours. Do it after the first 10 hours on a new rake.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil (top-up) | 1 | SAE 80W-90 API GL-5. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 80W-90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Put the rake in work position on the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
- Clear any crop or twine wrapped round the rotors and the rotor undercarriages.
- Tighten the transport wheel nuts to 27 daNm (270 Nm).
- Tighten the tine mounting screws to 8.5 daNm (85 Nm). Replace bent or broken tines.
- Remove the gearbox filler plug and its seal and check the level with a clean slide: it should be 30 mm. Top up with 80W-90 GL-5 if low and refit the plug.
- On a new rake, do this after the first 10 hours.

Known problems
Raised rotors
Never stand under a rotor arm raised for transport unless the transport locks are on. Close the hydraulic hose taps before maintenance.
Twine round the rotors
Kuhn says clear wrapped material from the rotors and undercarriages. Stop the PTO and engine and take the key out first.
Lubricated-for-life gearbox
The angle gearbox is filled for life but Kuhn still asks for a level check. A falling level means a leaking seal.
Repair guides
- Rotor arm transport locks not engaging (Moderate, 30–90 minutes): Rotor arms will not lock up for transport, locks stiff or rusty, lift stops not releasing, arms creeping down.
- Tine arm and tine replacement, and twine wrapped round the rotors (Easy, 30–90 minutes): Bent or broken tine arms, missing tines, crop left in the row, twine or net wrapped round the rotor hubs or undercarriages.
- Rotor oscillating shaft (tine arm cam) replacement (Hard, 2–3 hours per arm): A tine arm flaps loosely or does not lift at the swath, knocking from the rotor, worn cam rollers.
- Angle gearbox oil level falling: finding the leak (Moderate, 30–60 minutes (seal work: dealer)): Oil on the gearbox or input shaft, level below 30 mm on the dip check, gearbox noisy.
- PTO shaft repair: universal joint cross and bearing, and guard replacement (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Play or clicking in a universal joint, rust coming out of the bearing cups, vibration, split or worn guard cones, guard not turning freely, missing chain.
- Tyre and wheel bearing checks and repair (Moderate, 1–2 hours per wheel): Wheel wobbling or growling, hub hot after work, grease thrown out of the hub, soft or cut tyre, wheel nuts loose.
