Service jobs and parts
Shares, points and other soil-engaging parts
Wear parts · every 10 hours
Kuhn says to replace worn or damaged parts at once with genuine Kuhn parts. Worn share tips are the usual reason a plough will not pull into the ground. The maker's parts book gives the numbers for your body type: none are given in the handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share / point set | 1 | Genuine Kuhn, per body. Part numbers differ with body type: check your handbook or parts book | check your handbook |
| Landside, mouldboard and skimmer parts | 1 | Genuine Kuhn. Check your parts book | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the plough to the ground and make sure it cannot move. Stop the tractor and take the key out.
- Look at every share tip, point, landside and mouldboard. Replace shares when the tip has worn so the plough no longer pulls in.
- Fit new parts with the bolts tightened to the torque in the handbook table.
- On the furrow-width, vertical and offset settings, recheck the first body after changing parts.
Tools: Socket set and torque wrench, Gore tool or hammer, Eye protection, Gloves
Greasing (front pivot pin, headstock shafts, wheel, trailed arm, disc coulters)
Lubrication · every 50 hours or every year
Kuhn says to grease these points every 50 hours, with the front pivot pin named at 50 hours and the others on the chart (the tick columns could not be read from the copy found, so every 50 hours is used for the lot). Clean each nipple first.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-purpose grease | 1 | EP2 grease. Shell multi-purpose grease NLGI 2 or equivalent. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park the plough on firm ground, switch the tractor engine off, take the key out, wait for everything to stop and apply the parking brake.
- Clean the nipples and grease the front pivot pin.
- Grease the shafts between the headstock and the frame.
- Grease the wheel, the trailed implement arm (if fitted) and the disc coulters (if fitted).
- Grease everything again before storing the plough at the end of the season.
Tools: Grease gun, Rags
Check nuts and bolts after the first 10 hours, then regularly
Frame · every 50 hours
Kuhn's chart has columns for the first 10 hours, every 50 hours and every 200 hours or end of season, and lists nuts and bolts and tyre pressures as maintenance items (the tick positions could not be read from the copy found, so every 50 hours is used). It says to use the torque table in the manual.
Step-by-step
- Park the plough, stop the tractor and take the key out.
- Check every nut and bolt, especially on the bodies, the headstock and the wheel. Use the torque table in your handbook (standard ISO 898-1 values).
- Check the tyre pressure on the depth wheel to your handbook.
- Check the axle nut is tight (40 daNm).
Tools: Torque wrench, Spanner set, Tyre gauge
Non-Stop Hydraulic circuit pressure and bleeding
Leg protection · every year
The Non-Stop circuit lets each body lift over a stone and drop back. If the pressure falls while ploughing or a body skips, air or a leak is the cause. The pressure sets how hard the share tip is held: 90–150 bar.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic hose | 1 | Only if cracked or leaking. Genuine Kuhn hose from a dealer | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Set the plough bodies in work at 20 in width. Connect the circuit hose to a tractor spool valve.
- Open the valve by no more than two turns. Run the tractor spool until the gauge shows the pressure for your soil: 90 bar (light, stony ground) up to 150 bar (clay).
- Close the valve, remove the two pins from the beam and disconnect the hose.
- If the pressure drops while ploughing or a body skips, there is air in the circuit. Bleed it by raising the plough off the ground and cycling the circuit several times, letting the body drop as far as possible, then inflate again after bleeding.
- Never take the pins out of the beam while the circuit is under pressure and make sure nobody is near the swing area.
Tools: Pressure gauge on the plough, Spanners, Rags
Hoses, accumulator and rams
Hydraulics · every year
Kuhn's chart lists replacing the hydraulic hoses every 5 years and the accumulator every 10 years. It says not to aim a pressure washer at the cylinder or hose seals.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic hose set | 1 | Every 5 years. Genuine Kuhn hose from a dealer | check your handbook |
| Hydraulic accumulator | 1 | Every 10 years. At least 1 L capacity. Genuine Kuhn from a dealer | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the plough and release the pressure.
- Check the turnover ram, lift ram and Non-Stop cylinders and every hose and fitting for leaks and chafing.
- Replace hoses at 5 years and the accumulator at 10 years. Apply your national rules for pressurised equipment.
Tools: Spanners, Rags, Card (for finding leaks)
End-of-season storage and start-of-season check
Storage · every year
Kuhn lists a set routine at the end of the season to stop rust and a short list for the start of the next season.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease and diesel mix | 1 | To coat the working parts | check your handbook |
| Acid-free grease | 1 | For cylinder rods | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Clean the plough thoroughly with a water hose. If you use a high-pressure cleaner, keep it off the cylinder and hose seals.
- Check all tools and their fixings.
- Coat the working parts with a mix of grease and diesel to stop rust.
- Grease the cylinder rods that are exposed, then push the rods fully in to protect them from damp and dust. Touch up paint.
- Grease the machine, fit the protective caps on the hydraulic couplings and store under cover in a dry place.
- At the start of the season: re-read the handbook, check the plough is greased, wipe grease off cylinder rods, check tyre pressure, nuts and bolts and hoses.
Tools: Water hose, Grease gun, Paint for touch-ups

Known problems
Air in the Non-Stop circuit
If a body skips or the pressure falls while ploughing, there is air or a leak in the circuit. Bleed it and check the gauge.
Do not remove beam pins under pressure
Never take the pins out of the beam while the circuit is pressurised.
