Service jobs and parts

Grease the PTO shaft

Lubrication · every 10 hours

The manual lists the PTO shaft under 'every day'. Pump the grease gun once or twice at each nipple. Greasing all the shaft's nipples is the short version; the manual shows where they are on the LT and CT machines.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Multipurpose grease1EP2 grease. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the tractor and disconnect the PTO.
  2. Loosen the clamping ring and pull the guard band back. Grease the nipple with one or two pumps.
  3. Fit the band and clamping ring back, then grease the nipples on the shaft guard and on the hatch end on the LT or CT as shown in the manual.

Tools: Grease gun

Change the oil in the cutterbar, main gear, centre gear and swivel hitch gearboxes

Gearboxes · every year

Kverneland's storage list says change the oil in all of the machine's transmissions at the end of the season, so this is a yearly job. The manual has an interval chart (page 74) with first-change and 200-hour columns that did not read clearly in the copy used, so check it in your own handbook. The cutterbar takes 3.2 to 4.6 L depending on the model, the main gear 1.5 L, the centre gear (CT only) 1.5 L and each swivel hitch part 1.1 L.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, stop the tractor, take the key out and disconnect the PTO. Raise the cutterbar and close the mechanical safety valve before you work under it.
  2. For the cutterbar, put a block under the right-hand wheel so the mower leans slightly left, remove the outer left stone guard, take out the drain plug and let it drain. Level the cutterbar with a spirit level, refill through the oil plug to the level shown in the manual and refit the plug.
  3. For the main gear, take off the guard, remove oil plug 3 and drain for 10 to 15 minutes. Refit it, then fill through plug 2 or 1 until oil reaches the level hole. Do the same for the centre gear on a CT.
  4. For each part of the swivel hitch, remove the drain plug, drain for 10 to 15 minutes, refit it and refill through the level plug.
  5. Refit all guards. Take used oil to a recycling point.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners and sockets, Funnel, Barrier cream or gloves

Check gearbox and cutterbar oil levels

Gearboxes · every year

The manual has an inspection step for each gearbox (cutterbar, main gear, centre gear, swivel hitch). The interval chart on page 74 did not read clearly in the copy used, so this is set as a yearly prompt. Check your handbook for the hour interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Stand the mower on level ground with the cutterbar raised and the safety valve closed.
  2. Remove the level plug on each gearbox. Oil should reach the hole. For the cutterbar, wait about 3 minutes if the oil is warm and about 15 minutes if cold, and check with the cutterbar level.
  3. Top up through the filler hole with the same oil if needed, refit the plugs and guards.

Tools: Spirit level, Spanner or socket, Funnel

Grease the swivel hitch, drawbar, cutting unit bearings and cylinder link

Lubrication · every year

The manual says to grease the swivel hitch every season, and to use the grease gun on the drawbar, cutting unit nipples (both sides and at the discs), universal joint and hydraulic cylinder link as the chart on page 74 shows. That chart did not read clearly in the copy used, so this is a yearly minimum. Check your handbook for the shorter intervals.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Raise the cutterbar, close the mechanical safety valve and stop the tractor.
  2. Press the grease gun on each nipple and give one or two pumps (the manual says one or two at most).
  3. Turn the cutting disc by hand until both grease nipples show, then grease them.
  4. Wipe off any extra grease.

Tools: Grease gun

Check knives and cutting discs and their bolts

Cutterbar · every year

The manual says check the knives on a regular basis because worn or damaged knives unbalance the rotating parts and cause vibration damage. Retighten the cutting disc after the first hour of use on a new or refitted disc. Interval columns on page 74 did not read clearly, so a yearly prompt is set; look over the knives much more often in use.

Step-by-step
  1. Raise the cutterbar, close the safety valve, fit the linchpins and open the guards around the cutterbar. Hang each guard in its chain.
  2. Turn the discs by hand until a damaged knife is in the access position. Check the knife and its bolt for wear and cracks.
  3. Tighten the knife bolt to 95 Nm ±5. Check the cutting disc for cracks and deformity and tighten it to 80 Nm ±5.
  4. Replace any knife or disc that is damaged, then close the guards and refit the linchpins.

Tools: Torque wrench, Spanners

Inspect the cones and the universal joint under the cutterbar guard

Cutterbar · every year

The manual covers an outside check of the cones, an inside check (clean out the cone cover) and inspection of the universal joint between the transmission and the cutterbar. Its interval chart did not read clearly in the copy used, so this is a yearly prompt.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Raise the cutterbar, close the safety valve and open the guards.
  2. Look over the cones on both sides. Remove the transmission guard and the cone top cover, clean the inside of the cone and refit the cover.
  3. Inspect both universal joints for wear and check for broken or loose bolts. Replace broken bolts, put Loctite 242 on the bolts and tighten them to the torque table.
  4. Refit the guards and lower the cutting unit.

Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench

Check conditioner Y-fingers and V-belt

Conditioner · every year

On machines with the rotor conditioner the manual says check for loose Y-fingers, the lock plate, the bolt (minimum diameter 9 mm) and the condition of the V-belt. Interval columns did not read clearly in the copy used, so this is a yearly prompt.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the cutting unit onto the ground with the tractor stopped.
  2. Check that each Y-finger moves freely and its bolt is fully tight. Replace a bolt worn below 9 mm in the worn area. Replace a damaged or cracked lock plate.
  3. Remove the guard and check the V-belt for wear, cracks and tension. Refit the guard.

Tools: Spanners, Vernier calliper

Check wheel bolts, tyre pressure and hydraulic hoses

Chassis · every year

The manual gives wheel bolts at 300 Nm and tyres at 3.5 bar (380/55-17), and says replace hydraulic hoses every 4 years. The wheel check appears in the interval chart but its column did not read clearly, so a yearly minimum is set; check the bolts after fitting a wheel and after the first hours of a new machine.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic hoses1Replace every 4 years. Check your handbook or parts bookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Check all the wheel bolts at 300 Nm.
  2. Check the tyre pressure is 3.5 bar.
  3. Look at the date stamped on each hydraulic hose and replace hoses that are 4 years old or leaking.
  4. Do not take the accumulator apart. It holds 40 bar and only authorised persons may check it.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre pressure gauge

End of season: clean, change oil and store

Storage · every year

The manual's storage list: check and tighten all bolts, repair damage, clean the machine thoroughly, change the oil in all the transmissions, cover the hydraulic coupling, clean and oil the PTO shaft and store it dry, check the safety guards, relieve pressure, store under cover and support both axles on blocks so the wheels are off the ground.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Clean the machine with a low-pressure washer only. Do not point high pressure at bearings, hoses or plastic parts.
  2. Check and tighten all bolts and repair any damage.
  3. Change the transmission oils, grease the nipples and oil the PTO shaft.
  4. Fit a dust cap to the hydraulic coupling, release hydraulic pressure and store the machine in a ventilated shed with both axles blocked up.
