Service jobs and parts

Daily greasing (headstock, wheels, coulters)

Lubrication · every 10 hours

Kverneland says grease daily while ploughing, using only EP grease, to keep water and dirt out of the bearings and moving parts. Wrong grease shortens bearing life. Grease every nipple again after pressure washing.

PartQtyNotesPart number
EP grease1Extreme-pressure grease, as the handbook sayscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough to the ground, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake.
  2. Wipe each nipple clean before greasing.
  3. Grease the headstock (turnover shaft bearings and cylinder pins) until fresh grease shows.
  4. Grease the depth/transport wheel pivots and wheel bearings, the disc coulter hubs and arms, and the automatic beam and front-point pivots where fitted.
  5. On a hydraulic depth wheel, grease the ram pins as well.
  6. Wipe off surplus grease so it does not collect grit.

Wear parts · every 10 hours

Kverneland says replace every part that goes into the ground when it is worn or damaged, with genuine parts, before the wear reaches the frog (saddle) and leg. Reversible points can be turned once when the end has worn. Worn parts also upset the body alignment. Numbers below are genuine Kverneland numbers as quoted by parts sellers; the share and point numbers fit bodies 6, 7, 8, 9, 25, 28, 29 and 30 (the 073031 point also 12, 15 and 19). Check your parts book against your body number before ordering.

Plough bolts1To suit; check your handbook. Mølbro gives 125 Nm for M12 point bolts and 180 Nm for M14 landside boltscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough onto blocks or the ground in work position, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Never work under a raised plough.
  2. Look at every share, point, landside, heel and shin. Replace them before the wear eats into the frog or leg, and replace the landside heel before the landside itself wears through.
  3. A reversible point can be turned end for end once when its tip has worn.
  4. Quick-Fit and Knock-on points: wear eye protection. Knock the old point off with the gore tool. Put the new point in front of the share, slide it back and knock it home using the gore tool as a buffer. The mating faces must be free of paint.
  5. Bolted parts: clean the seats, fit new plough bolts and nuts, and tighten them evenly.
  6. Take the paint off all new parts that touch the soil so they scour from the start.
  7. After a lot of new parts, recheck the body alignment (see the alignment task).

Tools: Socket set and breaker bar, Torque wrench, Gore tool and hammer (Quick-Fit / Knock-on points), Wire brush, Eye protection, Gloves

Skimmers and disc coulters

Wear parts · every 10 hours

Kverneland UK says set the disc coulters before the skimmers, keep every skimmer at the same depth and never deeper than 10 cm. Worn skimmer points and mouldboards bury trash badly.

Step-by-step
  1. With the plough lowered and the tractor stopped, check the skimmer points and mouldboards for wear and replace them in time.
  2. Check that the disc coulters turn freely and their hubs have no play.
  3. Set the discs first: about a third of the disc diameter deep and at least 5 cm from the body.
  4. Then set the skimmers to about 3–5 cm deep, all the same. Never deeper than 10 cm.

Tools: Spanners, Tape measure

Shear bolt check (LD, LB and other shear-bolt models)

Leg protection · every 10 hours

A half-sheared bolt lets the leg drop back and gives uneven furrows. Kverneland UK says check the shear bolts first whenever the work goes uneven. Only fit the bolt Kverneland lists: a stronger bolt passes the load on to the leg and frame.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Shear bolt1Genuine per Kverneland parts book LD (2013 and 2026 books), shear bolt beam: shear bolt M20x88 with nutKK035072R
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough to the ground and stop the tractor engine.
  2. To find a half-sheared bolt, slacken it and see if it will turn a full 360°. A bent bolt will not turn: replace it.
  3. Replace a sheared bolt only with the same size and grade. Never use a high-tensile bolt from the bin.
  4. Check the leg and frog were not bent by the impact before ploughing on.
  5. Carry spare shear bolts and nuts on the plough.

Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench

Auto-reset springs and hydraulic release pressure

Leg protection · every year

On the ES the spring release needs checking every year: the ES/LS manual says adjust a spring that is shorter or longer than 70 cm. Where hydraulic release is fitted, check the preload at 100 bar, then set 100–160 bar to suit the ground: the lowest pressure that keeps the bodies in work.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Spring bolts1Only if worn. Check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Hitch the plough to the tractor and stand it on firm, level ground. Support the beams with a wedge under the landsides.
  2. Spring release (ES): measure each spring and adjust it if it is not 70 cm. Check the spring bolts for wear and replace worn ones. Clearance at bolt E should be 1–2 mm.
  3. Hydraulic release: set the system to 100 bar to check it, then set 100–160 bar for the conditions. In normal ploughing use the lowest pressure that keeps the bodies in work.
  4. Never work on the release system with the bodies loaded. Release the pressure first.

Tools: Tape measure, Spanners, Wedges to support the beams

Turnover ram, headstock and hoses

Hydraulics · every year

The turnover ram only locks the plough when the full turning sequence has finished, so a ram or valve fault can let the frame rotate in work. Kverneland's maintenance table lists replacing hydraulic hoses as a routine job.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic hoses1Only if cracked, porous or leaking. Genuine Kverneland: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough, stop the tractor engine and release the hydraulic pressure.
  2. Check the turnover ram, its pins and the turnover valve for leaks and wear. Check the hoses for cracks, chafing and leaks. Never feel for a leak with your hand.
  3. Check the headstock and cross shaft for play. Kverneland lists replacing the cross shaft in its maintenance table: replace it if worn.
  4. Raise the plough fully and reverse it, always completing the full turning sequence so the ram locks. The plough turns when pressure goes to the P side of the turnover valve.

Tools: Spanners, Rags, Card (for finding leaks)

Working width and body alignment

Frame · every year

The AB/AD manual says align the bodies after every ploughing season. Poorly aligned bodies wear unevenly and pull the plough off line.

Step-by-step
  1. Fit new wear parts before measuring, so the readings are accurate.
  2. Using a straight edge against the rear landside, check the furrow width of each body. All bodies should be parallel.
  3. Measure the underbeam clearance from the underside of a new point to the underside of the frame. Left and right bodies should match.
  4. Check the interbody clearance from a non-wearing datum; chalk the mouldboard ends and set the mouldboard rear stays so all bodies match.
  5. Width: on a mechanical plough set it on the turnbuckle with the supplied spanner. On Vari-Width, set it with the width ram from the tractor.
  6. Before road transport, set the narrowest width and close the valve on the width ram.

Tools: Straight edge, Tape measure or rule, Chalk, Turnbuckle spanner (supplied)

Pre-season check and bolt retightening

Storage · every year

Kverneland's maintenance table lists checking the plough's condition, retightening bolts and nuts and checking the tyre pressure. The intervals in the table could not be read: check your handbook. Do it at least before each season.

Step-by-step
  1. Retighten all bolts and nuts on the plough.
  2. Check the depth wheel tyre pressure (6.00-9: 420 kPa / 60.9 psi on the AB/AD) and that the tractor's rear tyres are at equal pressures.
  3. Set the tractor inside wheel setting to 110–160 cm, front 5–10 cm wider than the rear, with equal lift arm lengths.
  4. Take the paint off any new soil-engaging parts.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre gauge, Spanners

End-of-season lay-up (grease the mouldboards)

Storage · every year

Kverneland's maintenance table lists protecting the parts in direct contact with the soil against corrosion. A rusted mouldboard will not scour next season.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease or rust preventive1For the mouldboards, shares and landsidescheck your handbook
EP grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Clean the plough. A pressure washer is fine, but never aim it straight at bearings.
  2. Grease every nipple after washing.
  3. Coat the polished mouldboards, shares, points and landsides with grease or rust preventive.
  4. Park on firm, level ground on the parking stand. A plough not properly supported can tip over.
  5. On ploughs with Eco-shares, follow the handbook's storage note for them.

Tools: Pressure washer, Grease gun, Brush or rag

Known problems

Half-sheared bolts

A bolt that has started to shear lets the leg move and spoils the furrows. Slacken it and try to turn it 360°: if it will not turn, it is bent.

Uneven tyre pressures

Unequal tractor rear tyre pressures give uneven furrows on a reversible plough.

Incomplete turnover

Always finish the full turning sequence. Only then is the turnover ram locked.
