Service jobs and parts
Check the chain oil reservoir
Drives · every 8 hours
The handbook says to check the oil level in the reservoir daily and never let it run empty, or the pump and the roller chains can be damaged.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain oil | 1 | Chain lubricating oil ISO VG 68 to 220, non-thickening. Clean and fresh only. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XT | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Look at the reservoir (visual check) before starting the day.
- If low, clean around the cap first, unscrew it, and fill with clean oil through the filling filter up to the max mark.
- If it ran dry, bleed the system: take the lines off the lubrication points, run the pump until oil flows from each line with no bubbles, collect the oil, and refit the lines.
Tools: Funnel, Clean cloth
Grease the points (every 500 bales or daily)
Chassis · every 10 hours
The handbook's lubrication chart: drive shaft, tail gate hinge, locking hooks and their rollers, cutting rotor and castors after every 500 bales or daily. The lubricant metering device (roller lubrication) gets two strokes of a hand grease gun, never an air grease gun. The app counts hours, so this prompts about daily use.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | EP2 multipurpose grease (Renolit FEP 2, High-Lub LM 2 EP, Energrease LS-EP2 and similar). Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and wait for everything to stop. Make sure the tail gate is safe.
- Grease the drive shaft, tail gate hinge, locking hooks on both sides, the rollers on the locking device, cutting rotor on both sides and castors (if fitted).
- Give the lubricant metering device (roller lubrication) 2 strokes of the manual grease gun. Do not use a compressed air grease gun on it.
Tools: Grease gun (hand), Rag
Retighten everything after the first 20 hours
General · every 20 hours
New machine only. The handbook says to retighten all fixing screws, wheel nuts, drawbar screws and nuts, including inside the machine.
Step-by-step
- Retighten all fastening screws, wheel nuts (460 N·m) and drawbar screws and nuts, also the ones inside the machine.
- Do not touch the adjusting screws on the twine guiding or the net brake.
Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench
Change the main gear unit oil
Gear unit · every year
The handbook's annual list says oil change on the main gear unit (1.7 L), with the level checked on the dipstick or at the overflow hole. In special operating conditions the annual items are done weekly.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | 90 gear oil, API GL-5, 1.7 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Run the machine briefly to warm the oil, then stop the engine and take the key out.
- Drain the oil and refill with 1.7 L of SAE 90 API GL-5 gear oil.
- Check the level on the dipstick or at the overflow hole.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanner
Annual greasing after the season
Chassis · every year
The handbook's annual list: Belleville springs of the locking hooks, net or twine tying unit moving parts, tail gate locking cylinder, star ratchet in the pick-up drive, twine eyes and brakes.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pick-up tine (spare) | 1 | Genuine Welger number per Sparex (names RP 405, 435, 505, 535 and AP 630; alternative 034351). Also sold as Sparex S.78204. Placed here as the entry has no tine task | 0940522500 |
| Grease | 1 | EP2 multipurpose grease; Gleitmo 810 for the Belleville springs. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Dismantle, clean and grease the Belleville springs of the locking hooks. Do not change the sensor setting.
- Make the moving parts of the net tying unit or twine tying unit run smoothly (lubricant D machine oil in the handbook table).
- Grease the tail gate lock hydraulic cylinder (both sides), the star ratchet in the pick-up drive (left side) and the brakes (both sides). Lightly grease the chafe marks on the twine eyes.
- Machines with XtraCut 17 or XtraCut 25 cutting device: grease the knife levers 3 weeks after first commissioning, then once per season.
Tools: Grease gun, Spanners
Check the roller chain tension
Drives · every year
The handbook says chain tension must be checked and retightened at least after 500 bales. Prompt: yearly at least, more in a busy season.
Step-by-step
- On the pick-up and cutting device drive chains, loosen the chain tensioning blocks in their slots, readjust and retighten them.
- The other chains have spring tension. Adjust, then lock the nut again.
- If a chain cannot be tensioned any more, shorten it by one link (fit a cranked link if needed). New chains stretch quickly, so tension them slightly tighter at first.
Tools: Spanners
Regrind the cutting device knives
Cutting device · every year
The handbook says to regrind at least after cutting 500 bales, and sooner if conditions need it. With knife groups, use one group for 500 bales then the next.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cutting device knives | 1 | Regrind, or replace if worn. Check your handbook or parts book for the number | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Open and secure the tail gate hydraulically and mechanically. Wear gloves because the knives are sharp.
- Take the knives out, regrind them and refit them. Park any blind blades and removed knives behind the left casing door, secured with a cotter pin.
- Do not strike installed knives from underneath because the magnets in the holders can be damaged. Pacemaker wearers must keep away from the magnets.
Tools: Gloves, Knife holder tools, Grinder
Adjust the net tying disk brake and shock absorber
Net wrap · every year
The handbook describes these adjustments but gives no interval; use a yearly check.
Step-by-step
- With the lever pointing up, the brake disk must not turn by hand. If it does, loosen the screw on the lever and tighten the milled nut until the brake linings fully touch the disk, then retighten.
- If the lining wears on one side only, loosen the lock nut and wind the screw in slightly until the linings are parallel.
- The net tensioner shock absorber on the left: set the two wing nuts hand tight at the top and bottom end positions so the tensioner can just move by hand. Do not reach into the net knife area.
Tools: Spanners, Gloves
Winter pause
General · every year
The handbook's winter list.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | EP2 grease for the tying mechanism and bearings. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Put the baler on level ground. Take the twine and net out and clear straw from the machine.
- Unplug the control box and keep it dry and at room temperature.
- Remove the cutting device knives, regrind them and refit them. Grease the tying mechanism and all the bearings.
- Lightly grease the baling chamber surface with something that harms neither the environment nor the fodder, such as rape oil.
- Check and adjust the tyre pressures.
Tools: Grinder, Grease gun, Tyre gauge
Replace the PTO shaft shear bolt (if fitted)
Driveline · when needed
Only when it shears. Machines with a shear bolt yoke carry a bolt that fails on overload. Machines with a cam-type cut-out clutch have no bolt.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shear bolt with nut | 1 | Lely genuine part. Use only original shear bolts | 0930.84.53.00 |
Step-by-step
- Switch off the PTO, stop the engine, take the key out and find what caused the overload.
- Fit a new original shear bolt with its nut. Do not restart until the cause is removed.
Tools: Spanners

Known problems
Work with the tail gate open
The handbook says the tail gate must be secured hydraulically (shut-off valve on the maintenance platform) and also mechanically before any work with it open.
Knife holder magnets
The knife holders have magnets that can upset a pacemaker.
Repair guides
- Roller chain tension and the automatic chain oiler (Lely Welger RP 405-535) (Moderate, 1 to 2 hours): Chain noise, chains jumping or whipping, dry or rusty chains, or the chain oil reservoir ran empty.
- Shear bolt or cam clutch overload and clearing a blocked feed channel (Lely Welger RP 405-535) (Easy, 20 to 40 minutes): Baler stops with a bang and the drive shaft turns without driving (sheared bolt or cam clutch slipping), or the feed channel and rotor are jammed with crop.
- Net tying unit: disc brake and net tensioner damper (Lely Welger RP 405-535) (Moderate, 30 to 45 minutes): Net roll coasts on, net does not stay tight or tears, loose wrapping, or the net tensioner flops about instead of staying controlled.
