Service jobs and parts

PTO shaft, slip clutch and double joints greasing

PTO shaft · every 8 hours

Lely: every 8 working hours grease the PTO shaft cross assemblies, protection tubes and slip clutch, the profiled tubes, and the cross assemblies of the double universal joints.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1NLGI 2 biodegradable grease. Total Biomultis SEP2 (biodegradable). Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the tedder to the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
  2. Grease the nipples on the PTO shaft cross assemblies, the protection tubes and the K33 slip clutch.
  3. Pull the shaft apart and grease the profiled tubes.
  4. Grease the cross assemblies of the double universal joints between the rotors.
  5. Check the PTO shaft slides in and out smoothly and the guards are complete and chained.

Rotor gearbox greasing

Gearbox · every 8 hours

Lely: grease the gearbox gears every 8 working hours, turning the rotors bit by bit so the grease spreads over all the gears. Also check the gearboxes for grease leaks.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1NLGI 2 biodegradable grease. Total Biomultis SEP2; see fluids for the other grease the manual names. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the tedder to the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
  2. Wipe each gearbox nipple clean.
  3. Pump grease into the gearbox while turning the rotors round a little at a time by hand, so the grease reaches every gear.
  4. Check each gearbox for grease leaking out. Leaking grease means a seal or gasket needs attention.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Rotor and Stabilo pivot greasing

Frame · every 40 hours

Lely: grease the pivot points of the side rotors, the Stabilo steering device pivots and all other pivots every 40 working hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Unfold the tedder into work position on the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
  2. Grease the pivots of the side (lateral) rotors.
  3. Grease the pivots of the Stabilo steering device.
  4. Grease or oil all the other pivot points.

Tines and tine arms check and replacement

Tines · every year

Lely: after work, check the tines and tine arms are tight and undamaged; smooth, rust-free tines let the crop flow freely. Tines are handed: clockwise rotors take right-hand tines, anticlockwise rotors take left-hand ones.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Double tine, right-hand (clockwise rotor)1As needed. Earlier number 4101701380. Kramp lists it as 4.1043.1175.0, 360 mm long, 9 mm wire4104311750
Double tine, left-hand (anticlockwise rotor)1As needed. Earlier number 41017012604104311680
Step-by-step
  1. Unfold the tedder into work position on the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
  2. Wear gloves. Check every tine for cracks, bends and wear, and every tine arm for bends and looseness.
  3. Replace broken or bent tines with the right hand for that rotor's direction.
  4. Tighten loose tine and tine arm bolts to the torque for their size in the handbook's table (for example M12 85 Nm). The manual gives no separate tine bolt figure.
  5. Clean rust and crop off the tines.

Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench, Gloves

Periodic maintenance (start of season)

Storage · every year

Lely's periodic maintenance: at the start of the haymaking season, before long storage, and when the tedder is used a lot in the season.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1NLGI 2 biodegradable grease. Total Biomultis SEP2. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the tedder in work position on hard, level ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out.
  2. Grease every point in the 8-hour and 40-hour tasks, plus the spring-loaded locking pins of the PTO shaft yoke.
  3. Check the PTO shaft telescopes smoothly. A damaged shaft wears both the tedder and the tractor.
  4. Look the machine over for damage.
  5. Check the tyre pressures against the figure in your handbook (it shows 2.75 bar and 1.5 bar).
  6. Check all nuts and bolts and tighten loose ones to the table: M8 25 Nm, M10 50 Nm, M12 85 Nm, M14 135 Nm, M16 215 Nm, M20 410 Nm.
  7. Rotor sag check: with the tedder on level ground, raise the centre wheels 60 mm. The tedder should be level and the stop bolts should just touch their stops.
  8. Check all safety decals are there and readable.

Tools: Grease gun, Tyre pressure gauge, Torque wrench, Tape measure, Jack

After-work care and storage

Storage · every year

Lely's after-operation and storage steps. Lely recommends storing it unfolded.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Anti-corrosion agent1For the tines and the ram piston rodcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the tedder, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the rotors have stopped.
  2. Clean the machine thoroughly.
  3. Check the tines and tine arms (see the tine task).
  4. Coat the machine, and the tines in particular, with anti-corrosion agent.
  5. For long storage, coat the ram piston rod too, and wipe it off before use. If it hardens on the rod it can damage the ram seal.
  6. Park it on hard, level ground. Lely recommends storing it folded out.

Known problems

Handed tines

Clockwise and anticlockwise rotors take different tines. A tine fitted on the wrong rotor throws crop badly and breaks sooner.

Gearbox grease leaks

Lely asks you to check the gearboxes for grease leaks. Keep greasing them every 8 hours, turning the rotors as you go.

Wide tractor tyres

A tractor with very wide rear tyres or a wide track can touch the tedder on a bend. Lely sells a kit for the Stabilo steering device.
