Service jobs and parts
Tine bolt tightness check
Tines · every 8 hours
Lely lists checking the tines are tight (600 Nm) as part of the maintenance after each day's work, and again at the start of the season.
Step-by-step
- Lower the harrow to the ground, stop the tractor and take the key out.
- Clean the machine.
- Check each Allen socket-head tine bolt with a torque wrench at 600 Nm (60 kgm).
- Coat the machine with a rust preventive if it will stand.
Tools: Torque wrench (to 600 Nm), Allen socket to suit
PTO shaft greasing
PTO shaft · every 8 hours
Lely: grease the PTO shaft cross joints, guard tubes and profile tubes every 8 working hours. In winter, grease the guard tubes after work so they do not freeze.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | Multi-purpose | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the tractor and take the key out.
- Grease the nipples on both cross joints and the guard tubes.
- Pull the shaft apart and grease the profile tubes.
- In freezing weather, grease the guard tubes after work.
Tools: Grease gun
Pivot points greasing
General · every 40 hours
Lely: grease or oil all other pivot points every 40 working hours.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | Multi-purpose | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the tractor and take the key out.
- Grease or oil every pivot: roller arms, levelling board arms, soil deflectors and the floating system.
- Wipe off surplus.
Tools: Grease gun, Oil can
Change gearbox oil change
Gearbox · every 400 hours
Lely: change the gearbox oil of a new machine (or a rebuilt gearbox) after about 20 working hours, then every 400 working hours, and more often in hard conditions. There is no filter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | ISO VG 680 (CLP 680) gear oil. Esso Spartan EP 680 or equivalent, 5.2 L | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Let the gearbox cool: it gets very hot after long, hard work. Wear gloves.
- Tilt the harrow slightly forwards and put a tray in front of the gearbox.
- Unscrew the drain plug and let the oil run out.
- Refit the drain plug and fill with 5.2 L of ISO VG 680 gear oil.
- Check with the dipstick: the level should be between the end of the dipstick and the groove.
- Check the gearbox breather is clean, or pressure builds up and the seals leak.
Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanners, Funnel, Gloves
Tine and tine holder replacement
Tines · every year
No hour figure is given: change tines when worn. Tines and holders differ by direction of turn. The tines must trail, with the bulges at the tips facing back.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tines | 1 | Left- and right-hand types; check your handbook or dealer for the number | check your handbook |
| Loctite 640 | 1 | On the rotor shaft when fitting a tine holder | check your handbook |
| Split pins | 1 | New for each holder nut | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Support the raised harrow on stands, stop the tractor and take the key out.
- Fit tines so they trail in the direction of turn, bulges at the tips facing back.
- When fitting a tine holder, put Loctite 640 on the rotor shaft. Tighten the holder nut to 250 Nm and fit a new split pin.
- Tighten the tine bolts to 600 Nm.
- Recheck the bolts after the harrow has worked a couple of hours.
Tools: Torque wrench (to 600 Nm), Allen socket, Socket for the holder nut, Stands
Intermittent maintenance (start of season and before storage)
General · every year
Lely's intermittent maintenance is done at the start of the season, before long storage and when the harrow is used hard. It covers greasing, bolt torques, the trough grease level, the gearbox breather and oil level, and the decals.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trough grease | 1 | EP0 grease. Esso EHL 484 XC or a Ca-Li / Li grease to NLGI 0, only if the level is low. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 0 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Grease every point in the lubrication list, plus the spring-loaded locking pins of the PTO yoke.
- Check the PTO shaft slides in and out easily.
- Check all nuts and bolts, especially the trough top lids, gearbox and bearing housings. Use the torques in the manual's table; the support tube bolts are M10 10.9: 55 Nm, M12 10.9: 95 Nm.
- Check the tines are at 600 Nm.
- Check the trough grease is 2–3 cm up from the bottom of the gears. It does not need changing, only topping up, unless soil has got in.
- Check the gearbox breather is clean and the oil is between the end of the dipstick and the groove.
- Check the rotor guard springs are stretched to about 270 mm (about 290 mm with a levelling board).
- Check all safety decals are present and readable.
Tools: Grease gun, Torque wrench, Rule

Known problems
Lelymatic shear-pin automats
The shear pin grades are matched to 540 or 1,000 rpm. If you change PTO speed, change the shear pins too. Their servicing is in a separate manual.
Gearbox cooling
Keep the gearbox ribs free of soil so it can cool.
Repair guides
- Tine and tine holder replacement and loose tine bolts (Moderate, 2–4 hours for a full set): Tines loose or lost, worn short, bent after stones, or a tine holder loose on its rotor shaft.
- Gearbox leaking or running hot (Moderate, 1 hour; seal replacement longer): Oil weeping from the change gearbox seals or cover, gearbox too hot to touch after work, or the dipstick level dropping.
- Lelymatic shear pins breaking and changing rotor speed gears (Moderate, 1 hour): Shear pins in the Lelymatic automats break often, or rotor speed needs changing for the soil.
- Rotor trough grease low or contaminated (Hard, 1 hour to check; a day to clean out): Grease seen leaking from the trough lid or round the tine holders, noisy rotor gears, or soil found in the trough.
