Greasing to the Lemken chart

Lubrication · every 10 hours

Lemken's grease chart has 10-hour, 50-hour and before/after winter-break columns. The page could not be read clearly enough to say which point sits in which column, so grease all of them at the 10-hour interval unless your handbook says otherwise.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Environmentally friendly grease, as Lemken sayscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough to the ground, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the parking brake.
  2. Grease the turnover (slewing gear) bearing, its pivot points and the cylinder adapters.
  3. Grease the Optiquick or Trulign adjustment centre and the turnbuckles, plus the thread of the angle adjustment.
  4. Grease the depth/transport wheel swing axle and wheel bearings, and the swivel brackets and control rod.
  5. Grease the overload device bearings (the HX device where fitted), the disc coulter bearings and the joints of all hydraulic rams.
  6. Grease the polished wear surfaces, pins and adjusters regularly as well.

Wear parts · every 10 hours

Lemken says check all soil-working tools daily and replace shares, mouldboard edges, mouldboards and landsides in time, so the supporting parts are not damaged. Numbers below are genuine Lemken numbers quoted by parts sellers and Sparex; check them against your parts book and body type.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough onto the ground or blocks, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Never work under a raised plough.
  2. Check every share, point, landside, wedge and mouldboard for damage and wear. Replace worn parts before the wear reaches the frog or leg.
  3. On Dural bodies the point is separate from the wing share: change the point on its own when only the tip has gone.
  4. On DuraMaxx mouldboards the strips change without tools.
  5. Clean the seats, fit new parts with new bolts and tighten them evenly.
  6. Recheck the pitch afterwards: the distance from point to frame should be the same on all bodies.

Shear bolts

Leg protection · every 10 hours

Lemken says only use shear bolts of the listed size and strength. A stronger bolt or a plain bolt passes the load to the leg and beam. The numbers below are the EurOpal / VariOpal pairs; Juwel 8 uses M14 × 75 (8.8) or M14 × 70 (10.9) bolts. The HX version has no shear bolts.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough to the ground and stop the tractor engine.
  2. Drift out the broken halves.
  3. Fit a new bolt of exactly the listed size and strength class. Never use a bolt from the bin.
  4. Check the leg and beam were not bent before ploughing on.
  5. Carry spare shear bolts of the right number on the plough.

Tools: Spanners, Drift, Hammer

Hydromatic / Hydrix overload pressure

Leg protection · every year

On the Juwel T the operating pressure must be at least 125 bar: low for light soil, high for heavy soil. Lemken says the device itself needs no maintenance, but the bodies drop if the pressure is lost.

Step-by-step
  1. Keep everyone clear: the system is always under pressure, bodies trip upwards and sideways, and they drop if the pressure falls.
  2. Standard version: open the shut-off valve under the gauge, set the pressure with the tractor spool (P lowers it, T raises it), then close the valve. Keep it at least 125 bar.
  3. Comfort version: the factory-set maximum and minimum are selected by pressurising A or B for a few seconds.
  4. To release the pressure, always use the relief valve, with the tractor spool in float.
  5. In work the spool must stay in float.

Tools: Pressure gauge on the plough

Turnover ram and hoses

Hydraulics · every year

The turnover ram is double acting with automatic turnover and lock valves. Lemken says replace hydraulic hoses at the latest 6 years after their date of manufacture, and porous or damaged hoses at once.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic hoses1Lemken-approved hoses only. Check your handbook for the numberscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the plough, stop the tractor engine and release the pressure.
  2. Check the hose date stamps and replace any over 6 years old, porous or leaking. Never feel for a leak with your hand.
  3. Check the turnover ram, its pins and valves for leaks.
  4. When turning, raise the plough fully, move the lever to H and the frame turns about 180°. Return the lever to N and wait 3–6 seconds before turning again.
  5. A single-acting spool can be used only with a separate return line to the tractor tank.

Tools: Spanners, Rags, Card (for finding leaks)

Working width and front furrow setting

Frame · every year

On the EurOpal the width per body is set to 33, 38, 44 or 50 cm (100 cm interbody) or 30, 35, 40 or 45 cm (90 cm interbody). The VariOpal changes width hydraulically from the seat after the basic Optiquick setting.

Step-by-step
  1. EurOpal: set the width per body in the frame holes to suit the soil.
  2. VariOpal: after the basic Optiquick setting, set the width from the seat with the Memory or adjuster ram.
  3. Set the front furrow width with the turnbuckle, or the hydraulic or Memory ram.
  4. Check the point-to-frame distance is the same on every body.
  5. Set skimmers 5–10 cm deep and disc coulters 7–9 cm deep, 2–3 cm from the landside line.

Tools: Tape measure, Spanners

End-of-season lay-up (grease the mouldboards)

Storage · every year

Lemken says clean the plough, grease it to the chart (it has a before-and-after winter-break column), grease the ram piston rods with non-acid grease and stand it on a flat, stable base. Greasing the polished mouldboards, shares and landsides keeps them bright for next season.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Non-acid grease for ram rods; grease or rust preventive for mouldboards and sharescheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Clean the plough. Do not pressure-wash a new plough in its first 6 weeks; after that keep the nozzle at least 60 cm away, at most 100 bar and 50 °C.
  2. Grease every point on the chart.
  3. Coat the polished mouldboards, shares, points and landsides with grease.
  4. Grease the exposed piston rods of the turnover, width and other rams with non-acid grease.
  5. Remove any lower subsoilers (pull pin 2) and park the plough on a flat, stable base.

Tools: Pressure washer, Grease gun, Brush or rag

Retighten bolts and wheel nuts

Frame · when needed

Lemken says retighten all wheel nuts and other bolts after the first 2 hours of use, then check them weekly in work. EurOpal wheel bolts: 300 Nm (ø 18 mm), 125 Nm (ø 14 mm).

Step-by-step
  1. After the first 2 hours on a new or rebuilt plough, retighten every wheel nut and every other bolt and nut.
  2. Then check them weekly while ploughing.
  3. EurOpal wheel bolts: 300 Nm for ø 18 mm, 125 Nm for ø 14 mm. For other bolts use the torque table in your handbook.

Known problems

Wrong shear bolts

Only the listed size and strength class protects the plough. Lemken bolts carry an LS (waisted) dimension on the larger sizes.

Hydromatic pressure

The hydraulic overload is always under pressure. Release it only with the relief valve and keep clear of the bodies.

Old hoses

Replace hydraulic hoses at the latest 6 years after their date of manufacture.
