Known problems
Never crank with the fuel filter empty
The manual warns that cranking the engine while the filter is drained damages the injection pump. Do not bleed it by towing the tractor in gear either.
One oil for gearbox, axle and hydraulics
The transmission, rear axle and hydraulics share about 57.5 L of oil, and the hydraulic strainer is only reached by removing the power unit when the oil is changed.
Brake fluid takes up water
Leyland asks for fresh fluid from sealed containers only and renewal every 1,800 hours, because water or dirt in the system can cause sudden brake failure.
Air cleaner element care
Never oil the element or wash it in fuel or solvent, never run without it, and keep a spare so the tractor is not stood while one dries for 24 hours.
Repair guides
- Bleeding the fuel system and changing injectors (Moderate, 1 hour to bleed; 2–3 hours to change all four injectors): Engine will not start or stops after running out of fuel or a filter change, runs on fewer than four cylinders, knocks, or smokes black from one injector.
- Hydraulic lift weak or slow: strainer, filters and relief pressure (Hard, Filters 1 hour; strainer (power unit off) a full day; pressure check 1–2 hours): Linkage lifts slowly or will not lift a full load, pump whines, oil looks dirty or milky, or the lift drops under load.
- Brakes: fluid change, bleeding and adjustment (Moderate, 2–3 hours): Spongy or sinking pedals, pedals at different heights, tractor pulls to one side, handbrake needs more than four notches, or brake fluid not changed for years.
- Clutch and IPTO clutch: adjustment, bleeding and removal (Hard, Adjustment 1 hour; clutch removal 1–2 days): Gears crunch or the tractor creeps with the pedal down, clutch slips under load, spongy pedal, or the PTO will not stop when the hand lever is pulled.
- Head gasket replacement (Hard, 1–2 days including the hot retighten): Coolant loss with no visible leak, bubbles in the radiator, white exhaust smoke, oil in the coolant, or compression leaking between cylinders.
- Water pump, thermostat and fan belt (Moderate, Belt 30 minutes; thermostat 1 hour; water pump 3–4 hours): Overheating, coolant leaking from the pump weep hole, a noisy pump bearing, slow warm-up, or a squealing or slack fan belt.
- Air cleaner element: clean, inspect and renew (Easy, 20 minutes (plus 24 hours drying if washed)): Loss of power, uneven running, smoky exhaust, or a dust valve that is split or stuck shut.
