Service jobs and parts

Pump oil reservoir and drip feed check

Pump · every 10 hours

Major: check the pump oil level in the reservoir and the drip feed every day. Set the drip feed to about one drop every three seconds as Major's start-up notes say. Use vacuum pump oil or new mineral oil ISO VG 100 (SAE 30). Never use transmission, hydraulic, gear, brake, vegetable or used oil.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Vacuum pump oil1ISO VG 100 (SAE 30) mineral oil, new only. Reservoir quantity: check your handbook. Aztec Oils match: MANUTEC VACUUM PUMP M 46check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Look at the sight glasses to confirm oil is circulating and the reservoir is above the minimum mark.
  2. Top up with new oil only.
  3. With the pump running, watch the drip feed and adjust it to about one drop every three seconds.

Tools: Funnel, Clean oil can, Rag

Flush the pump with diesel after each working day

Pump · every 10 hours

Major: flush the pump after every working day to protect the vanes. Suck about 1 litre of diesel in through the air intake with the pump on the pressure setting, then suck in a little reservoir oil to coat the pump and stop rust.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Diesel1About 1 L per flushcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. With the pump on the pressure setting, suck about 1 litre of diesel in through the air intake.
  2. Then suck in a small amount of reservoir oil to lubricate the pump.
  3. If the tanker will stand unused for a long time, remove the hose between the pump and the tank so gas does not reach the pump and rust it.

Tools: Clean container for the diesel

Drain the air brake tank

Brakes · every 40 hours

Major's maintenance schedule includes draining the air brake tank (if fitted) and tightening the wheel nuts. The schedule columns are initially, 8 h, 40 h and 160 h; this entry uses 40 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Open the drain valve under the air tank until no water comes out, then close it.

Swivel hitch grease

Chassis · every 80 hours

Major: grease the swivel-type hitch every 80 hours of work, check the hitch eye for wear weekly, and do not exceed the maximum speed as it wears the part and can fail.

PartQtyNotesPart number
EP2 grease1Lithium soap EP2. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Grease the swivel hitch.
  2. Check the hitch eye for wear.

Tools: Grease gun

Vacuum pump gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every 300 hours or every year

Major: change the oil in the vacuum pump gearbox (and Garda pump gearbox) after the first 50 working hours, then every 300 hours, using ISO VG 460 oil. The pump makers' own text says first change at about 100 hours; use Major's 50. There is no filter. Check the level at the see-through plug at the front of the pump.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Disconnect the PTO and park on level ground.
  2. Put the tray under the gearbox, remove the drain plug and let it drain.
  3. Refit the drain plug and fill through the filler plug at the top until the oil is up to the top of the see-through level plug.
  4. Refit the filler plug. Dispose of the old oil properly.

Tools: Drain tray (5 L), Spanners, Funnel, Rag

Wheel nuts and hub end float

Axles · every month

Major: check the wheel nuts every 7 days or 1,000 km, whichever is sooner, and daily for the first week on a new tanker. Torque is 270 N·m on standard 1150–2000 tankers and 550–600 N·m on LGP, Alpine, Challenger and Tandem tankers. Check hub end float at 5,000 km and every 15,000 km.

Step-by-step
  1. Tighten the wheel nuts in sequence to the torque for your model.
  2. Check the hub end float is 0.05–0.15 mm. If it is not, spin the wheel, tighten the adjusting nut until you feel resistance, back it off two to three flats, fit the lock washer and tighten the lock nut to 373 N·m.
  3. Check the tyre pressures when cold.

Tools: Torque wrench (to 600 N·m), Wheel brace

PTO shaft lubrication

PTO shaft · every month

Major: oil the PTO shaft with a brush and lubricating oil once a month and grease the universal joints and profiles regularly.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Lithium EP2 grease for the joints. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Pull the PTO shaft apart, clean the profiles and grease them.
  2. Grease the universal joints and guard bearings.
  3. Brush lubricating oil onto the shaft.

Tools: Grease gun, Brush, Oil can

Axle grease points and slack adjusters

Axles · every 6 months

Major's axle guide: lubricate all grease points after the first 300 miles (500 km), then every 10,000 miles (15,000 km), with lithium soap EP2 grease, and lubricate the slack adjusters. The manual counts in distance not hours, so this entry uses six months.

PartQtyNotesPart number
EP2 grease1Lithium soap EP2 grease. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 2check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Grease every axle grease point and the slack adjusters.
  2. Do not grease at high pressure into the hubs; it can damage the seals.
  3. Check the brake linings for wear and the cam shafts for sticking.

Tools: Grease gun

Cut-out valve and ball

Pump · every year

Major: check the cut-out valves protecting the pump work, make sure the balls are not soft or spongy, and replace the small ball every 12 months. Also check the over-pressure and vacuum relief valves work (yearly or after slurry gets in).

PartQtyNotesPart number
Cut-out valve small ball1Check your handbook or dealer for the numbercheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Remove the cut-out valve and inspect the balls.
  2. Replace the small ball, and any ball that is soft or spongy.
  3. Check the relief valves open at their set points: vacuum −0.80 bar and pressure 1 bar.

Tools: Spanners, Rag

Lay-up and tank wash

Storage · every year

Major: if the tanker will stand a long time, flush the pump with diesel, lubricate it with oil only, and remove the hose between pump and tank. Never enter the tank without proper confined-space precautions.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Diesel1For flushing the pumpcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wash the outside and flush the tanker with clean water.
  2. Flush the pump with diesel, then oil only.
  3. Remove the pump-to-tank hose. Grease all grease points.
  4. Leave the tank hatch open to ventilate. Do not enter a slurry tank without a proper confined-space procedure.

Tools: Pressure washer

Hub strip, repack and brake lining check

Brakes · every 2 years

Major: every 30,000 miles (50,000 km), remove the hubs, check the brake linings and anchor pins, clean out the old grease, repack the bearings with fresh grease (hub 400 g, hub cap 200 g), check the grease seals and reset the end float. Brake linings must be replaced as a complete set and need up to 1,000 km to bed in. The manual counts in distance, so this entry uses 24 months.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Known problems

Slurry gas

Major repeats the warning: slurry gases can kill instantly. Never work alone, never go into a tank, and keep people and animals away from mixing.

Wrong pump oil

Never put transmission, hydraulic, gear or used oil in the pump oil reservoir. Use vacuum pump oil or new ISO VG 100 (SAE 30) mineral oil only.
