- Park on firm level ground. Lower the boom fully and retract it, put the attachment flat on the ground, put the parking brake on, stop the engine and take the key out.
- Never work under a raised boom or attachment unless it is held up with a proper safety prop. The hydraulics alone are not safe to work under.
- Wipe each grease nipple clean before greasing.
- Grease the boom pivots and cylinder pins, then the wheel reducer pivots and axle oscillation points, until fresh grease shows.
- Look at the boom pads for wear while you are there and get them checked if they are worn.

Known problems
Wrong oil in the axles
The differentials run oil-immersed brakes and take a special Manitou brake oil, while the hubs take 80W90. Mixing them up can make the brakes judder or wear.
Brake fluid is mineral oil
The brake circuit uses Manitou mineral brake fluid. DOT fluid will ruin the seals.
Gearbox overheating (Powershift)
On Powershift models Manitou says lock out 6th gear for handling, towing and hilly work, and stop and change what you are doing if the transmission temperature light comes on.
Hydraulic dirt after an oil change
Manitou wants a clean-up cycle after every hydraulic oil change and oil at least to NAS 1638 class 8. Dirty oil wears the variable pump and the valve block.
Coolant with no corrosion inhibitor
The Perkins 1104D has no corrosion resistor, so the coolant must hold at least 25% antifreeze all year, not just in winter.
Stability limiter
The longitudinal stability limiter and its warning must be checked as the schedule says and reset by the handbook procedure after work on it.
Repair guides
- Axle and wheel reducer oils, hub seals and wheel nuts (Moderate, 1 hour to check all levels; half a day for a hub seal): Brakes judder or squeal after an axle oil change, oil on the inside of a wheel rim, hub level low, differential overfull.
- Brake oil level and parking brake adjustment (mineral brake fluid) (Moderate, 30–60 minutes): Brake oil level dropping, soft or long pedal, park brake won't hold on a slope, brake warning light.
- Powershift gearbox overheating and gearbox oil checks (Moderate, 30 minutes of checks): Transmission temperature light on, drive weakens when hot, smell of hot oil, problems mostly when towing, on hills or handling in 6th.
- Hydraulic oil level, filter and keeping the oil clean (Moderate, 1 hour for a filter change): Pump whine, slow or jerky boom after an oil change, filter blocked warning, cloudy or dark hydraulic oil.
- Cooling system: year-round antifreeze strength and overheating (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Engine runs hot, coolant level drops, rusty or sludgy coolant, weak antifreeze reading in summer.
- Longitudinal stability limiter test and fault codes (never bypass it) (Easy, 10 minutes): Fault light on the stability limiter, two beeps during the test, boom movements not cut out at the limit, error code A3, A4, A6 or A7.
- Boom pads and boom pivot pins: greasing and wear checks (Moderate, 1 hour to grease and check; pad shimming is workshop work): Boom judders or squeals extending, side play at the boom head, pins that won't take grease, worn bushes at the carriage or ram pivots.
- Fan and alternator belts: tension check, adjustment and renewal (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Belt squeal, charge warning light, engine running warm, belt cracked, glazed or frayed.
- Engine won't start after running dry or a filter change: bleeding the fuel system (Moderate, 30–60 minutes): Engine cranks but won't start after running out of fuel, draining the tank or changing a fuel filter; starts then stops or runs unevenly; water in the pre-filter bowl.
- Gearbox oil change and sump strainer clean (manual and Powershift) (Moderate, 2 hours): Gearbox slow to take drive, whining, dark or burnt-smelling oil, metal on the strainer magnet, or the 1,000-hour change is due.
- Axle differential oil change (oil-immersed brakes: the right oil matters) (Moderate, 1–2 hours for both axles): Brakes judder, squeal or grab, especially after someone else changed the axle oil; dark or contaminated diff oil; the scheduled drain is due.
