Pump oiler: daily top-up and drip rate
Pump · every 10 hours
Marshall: the pump oil is a total-loss system and must be checked and topped up daily. Fill the oiler tank to the top (the dipstick has no mark on it) and set the drip feed to one drop every two seconds with the pump idling. The Hertell instructions say one drop every one to two seconds must be visible in the oiler.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pump oil | 1 | SAE 20 (straight 20 / ISO VG 68) or similar. No milking parlour oil | check your handbook |
| Drop feeder (oiler) | 1 | Hertell KD-8000 pump part No.15 | 069/04-8015 |
| Oil sight glass | 1 | Hertell KD-8000 pump part No.11 | 069/04-8011 |
Step-by-step
- Remove the dipstick on top of the pump and fill the oil to the top. The dipstick is not marked.
- Start the pump at low revs and watch the drop in the oiler. Set it to one drop every two seconds at idle.
- Check the oiler again as soon as the pump is working hard.

Pump gearbox oil level
Pump · every 10 hours
Marshall: check the oil levels daily. The front part of the pump is a gearbox filled to the top of the small sight glass on its side with SAE 90 (EP90 / ISO VG 220) oil. Marshall's manual gives no oil change interval or quantity: check your pump handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil | 1 | SAE 90 (EP90 / ISO VG 220). Quantity: check your handbook. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
| Oil level indicator | 1 | Hertell KD-8000 pump part No.6 | 069/04-8006 |
Step-by-step
- Look at the sight glass on the side of the front gearbox with the tanker standing level.
- Top up to the top of the glass if low. Look for milky or dirty oil, which means water or slurry has got in.
- Fix any leak before the next job.
Tools: Funnel, Rag
Flush the pump with diesel
Pump · every 25 hours
Hertell instructions in Marshall's manual: after every 25 working hours pass diesel through the pump to wash it. Do it with the pump cold, on the pressure setting, and keep it turning until the diesel has cleared.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel | 1 | Small container, enough to wash through | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Put the pump in the pressure position and hold a container of diesel up to the pump exhaust so it is sucked through.
- Keep the pump turning about 30 seconds, then change from pressure to vacuum and keep it turning another 30 seconds. This also coats the top shut-off valve.
- Catch the dirty diesel from the exhaust and dispose of it properly. Do not stop the pump until the diesel has cleared.
Tools: Container for the diesel, Container to catch dirty diesel at the exhaust
Wheel nuts, U-bolts and hitch bolts
Chassis · every month
Marshall: check wheel nuts when the tanker is new, after one hour, after one day and weekly after that (and again whenever the wheel has been off). Torque is 270 N·m on 18 mm studs and 475 N·m on 22 mm studs. Check U-bolts (19 mm 270, 22 mm 540, 24 mm 600 N·m) and bolt-on hitch bolts (500 N·m).
Step-by-step
- Tighten the wheel nuts to the torque for the stud size.
- Check the tandem U-bolt torque and the bolt-on hitch bolts.
- Check the tyre pressures against the chart in the Marshall manual.
Tools: Torque wrench, Wheel brace
Hub and bearing grease
Axles · every 6 months
Marshall: hubs and bearings must be greased regularly. Check them after the first fourteen days of work, then every six months. Also grease tandem springs or the oscillating rocker if fitted.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | Check your handbook for the grade | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Grease the hubs and bearings and check for side movement on the wheels.
- Grease the tandem springs or oscillating rocker if fitted.
- Check the brake rams extend and return freely.
Tools: Grease gun
Pressure valve setting
Tank · every year
Marshall: maximum tank pressure should be kept at 1 bar (15 psi). Slacken the locking nut and screw the valve clockwise to increase pressure, anticlockwise to decrease. The manual gives no interval; yearly is a pre-season check.
Step-by-step
- Run the pump on pressure and read the gauge.
- If it exceeds 1 bar, slacken the lock nut on the valve body and turn the valve anticlockwise to lower it.
- Retighten the lock nut.
Tools: Spanner, Pressure gauge on the tanker
Shut-off valves and gate valve check
Tank · when needed
Marshall: regularly check the top shut-off valve for damage or corrosion, the slurry trap valve on the tank top is moving freely, and keep the hydraulic 6 inch valve clean (a dirty or badly adjusted valve lets air in and causes froth). With an activator on the gate valve, re-tension the spring if the valve stops closing, and clean the dome if it does not fully open. No interval is given.
Step-by-step
- Look at the top shut-off valve for damage and corrosion.
- Check the slurry trap valve moves freely and nothing blocks it.
- Clean the hydraulic 6 inch valve.
- If the gate valve activator does not close properly, re-tension its spring. If it does not open fully, slacken the spring, remove the dome and activator, clean out the dome, refit and re-tension.
Tools: Allen keys, Spanners
Pump wear parts (vanes, seals, bearings)
Pump · when needed
Marshall's parts chart lists the Hertell KD-8000 pump parts. No replacement interval is given: replace on wear or when the pump loses suction. Marshall also notes that a pump that has worked more than three hours cannot be treated as faulty manufacture under the pump maker's warranty.

| Lubrication nipple | 1 | Hertell KD-8000 pump part No.33 | 069/04-8033 |
Step-by-step
- Have the pump stripped by a pump specialist if suction falls or it is noisy.
- Quote the part numbers above for the KD-8000.
Tools: Spanners, Pump workshop
Tow hitch, lights and oil spray
Chassis · when needed
Marshall maintenance list: check the tow hitch for wear and replace as needed, keep the lights clean, and if the tanker will stand for a long time coat the lights with an oil spray.
Step-by-step
- Check the hitch for wear.
- Clean the lights and spray them with oil if the tanker will stand.
