Check wheel bearings and wheel nuts

Running gear · every 100 hours

Marshall says check the wheel bearings after the first 20 hours and every 100 hours after that, and tighten the wheel nuts daily for the first week.

Step-by-step
  1. Empty the spreader. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Lift each wheel clear, support the axle on stands and rock the wheel to feel for play.
  3. Grease the hubs and torque the wheel nuts: 18 mm studs 270 Nm, 22 mm 475 Nm.
  4. Check the brake rams extend and return freely and check tyre pressures from Marshall's chart.

Tools: Jack and axle stands, Long bar, Torque wrench

Main gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every 1,000 hours or every year

Marshall says check the gearbox oil level after the first 40 hours, and change the SAE 90 oil after 1,000 hours or once a year, whichever is sooner. There is no filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Park level with the push door fully back. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and wait for the beaters to stop completely.
  2. Drain the oil from the sump plug under the gearbox.
  3. Refit the plug and fill with SAE 90 through the top hole until it reaches the level plug, seen through the bottom hole in the rear of the spreader.
  4. Run briefly, stop, take the key out, wait for the beaters to stop and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel or oil pump

Storage between seasons

Storage · every year

Marshall's storage list: clean thoroughly, push door fully back, slurry door closed, touch up paint, grease all bearings and run for 5 minutes, and grease the push door runners.

Step-by-step
  1. Clean the spreader thoroughly. Disengage the PTO, stop the engine, take the key out and wait for the beaters to stop before going near them.
  2. Return the main push door all the way back and close the slurry door (only once the main door is back).
  3. Touch up scraped paint.
  4. Grease all bearings, including the remote points, then run the spreader for 5 minutes at low revs to work the grease in.
  5. Grease along the exposed push door runners against rust.
  6. Always shut the tractor engine off before anyone enters the body.

Tools: Pressure washer, Grease gun

Check rear beater tips and shear pin

Beaters · when needed

Marshall says the beater tips are reversible and protect the rotor: tip wear should not exceed 25 mm (1 in), and running them past that is a false economy. Use only the genuine shear pin.

Shear pin M10 x 55, grade 8.81Genuine Marshall. The book also quotes 052/20-8000 for the shear pin; check with Marshall052-01-10X55
Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and wait until the beaters have completely stopped. Never reach into the beaters with the engine running.
  2. Measure the wear on each beater tip; turn worn tips round, or replace them once worn more than 25 mm.
  3. If the shear pin has broken, remove every broken piece before fitting a new genuine pin.
  4. Check the rear PTO shaft guard is secured to the spreader.

Known problems

Push door used backwards

Marshall warns never to use the push door to pack the load backwards for more capacity.

Ram speed

Each of the 4 ram stages has its own flow control valve; set only the stage that is moving.

Slurry door with solid muck

Using the slurry door on solid muck can starve the beaters.
