Maschio's 8-hour list: grease the PTO shaft cross journals, the side adjuster jacks of the rear bar and the roller side supports, and check the tines are fixed.

Step-by-step

Lower the harrow, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Grease the PTO shaft cross journals.
Grease the side adjuster jacks of the rear levelling bar.
Grease the roller side supports (bearings).
Check every tine is held firmly.
On a new harrow, after the first 8 hours: check the whole machine and the tines for wear, then tighten all screws and bolts.

Gearbox and gear trough oil level check

Gearbox · every 50 hours

Maschio: check the reduction gearbox level (notch on the dipstick) and the gear trough level (between the two notches) every 50 hours.

Step-by-step

Park the harrow level on the ground and stop the tractor.
Reduction gearbox: check the oil reaches the notch on the dipstick. Top up if needed.
Gear trough: unscrew the fill plug and use the supplied dipstick. The oil must be between the two notches. Top up if needed.

Reduction gearbox and gear trough oil change

Gearbox · every 400 hours

Maschio: change the gearbox oil after the first 50 hours, then change the reduction gearbox and gear trough oil every 400 hours. Do not overfill. There are no filters.

Step-by-step

Run the harrow briefly to warm the oil, lower it to the ground, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Reduction gearbox: drain through the drain plug and refill through the fill/level plug with 4.5 L, up to the notch on the dipstick.
Gear trough: drain through its drain plug and refill through the fill/level plug. Check with the dipstick that the level is between the two notches.
Do not go over the stated amounts.
If the PTO shaft has a friction clutch, take it apart and clean the clutch discs now as well.

Tine wear check and replacement

Tines · every year

Maschio: replace tines as soon as they wear to 150 mm, or if they bend or break. Below 150 mm the warranty is void. Rapido harrows use a quick-release pin.

Step-by-step

Support the raised harrow on stands, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Measure each tine. Replace it at 150 mm or if bent or broken.
Rapido: put the key in the pin hole, turn it 180° clockwise to draw the locking pin, swap the tines, then turn it 180° anticlockwise to lock them.
Fit tines with the cutting edge facing the direction of the rotor's turn.

End-of-season lay-up

General · every year

Maschio: at the end of the season or before a long rest, wash and dry the harrow, especially of fertiliser and chemicals, check it and replace worn or damaged parts.

Known problems

Aquila and later DM

Later Maschio harrows have bigger gearboxes with synthetic oil and a sight glass. Do not use these figures for them; check your handbook.

Repair guides

Worn, bent or broken tines (Moderate, 2–3 hours for a full set (less with Rapido)): Harrow vibrates or bounces, works shallow, tilth is poor, or tines are short, bent or snapped.
PTO friction clutch slipping, overheating or not slipping (Moderate, 1–2 hours): The friction clutch on the PTO shaft slips and gets hot in normal work, or never slips when the harrow hits an obstacle.
Noisy drive, heavy power draw and clogging (Easy, 1 hour): Driveline knocks when lifting, the harrow is noisy in work, takes too much power, makes clods too big or too small, or soil builds up between rotors and levelling bar.
Gearbox or gear trough leaking oil (Moderate, 1 hour to check and top up; seals longer): Oil on the gearbox or trough, dipstick level falling, or noisy gears.
