Service jobs and parts
Air cleaner service
Engine · every 100 hours
The Millat care book says clean the oil-bath air cleaner every 100 hours. UK 240s may have a dry element instead, so follow your own handbook for the type you have.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil for the bath (oil-bath type) | 1 | Fill to the mark; check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Air filter element (dry type) | 1 | Outer element; inner safety element is 1670261M1. Some 240s take outer 1698683M1 instead, so match your old one | 1670260M1 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine without the air cleaner fitted.
- Clean the pre-cleaner bowl on top if fitted.
- Oil-bath type: remove the oil cup, tip out the oil and sludge, and wash the cup, body and element in paraffin. Refill the cup with clean oil to the mark only.
- Dry-element type: follow your handbook. Do not oil a dry element.
- Refit everything and check that the hose clips and joints are tight so no dust can get in.
Tools: Container for old oil, Paraffin for washing, Rags
Transmission and hydraulic oil and pump filter
Transmission · every 500 hours or every year
The shop manual says renew the hydraulic oil every 500 hours or yearly, whichever comes first. The Millat care book says every 600 hours and to clean the hydraulic pump filter at the same time; the shorter interval is used here and the filter is done every time.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmission/hydraulic oil | 1 | ≈32.5 L; grade: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Hydraulic pump filter | 1 | 160 x 72 mm element (also 1674984M91). Clean in diesel or renew | 1810694M91 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any implement fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Move the hydraulic lever to lower and work any spool valve levers to release trapped pressure before undoing anything.
- Let hot oil cool a little if the tractor has been working; it can burn.
- Remove the drain plugs and let the oil drain fully.
- Take out the hydraulic pump filter, wash it in clean diesel (or fit a new one) and refit it with a sound seal.
- Refit the drain plugs and fill with the right oil.
- Check the level on the dipstick under the seat. For ploughing and trailer work keep it in the marked zone; if you run outside hydraulics (such as a tipping trailer or blade) from the gearbox oil, fill to MAX.
- Run the engine, raise and lower the linkage, lower it again, stop the engine and recheck the level.
Tools: Large drain tray (40 L), Spanners for drain plugs, Funnel or pump, Clean diesel and a tray for washing the filter
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · when needed
No maker's interval for the UK 240 could be found online, so check your handbook. The filter is changed with the oil every time.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | ≈5.9 L plus ≈0.95 L for the filter; grade: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Oil filter (spin-on) | 1 | Agriline lists this for the 240 (cross-refers to 1447082M2 and 2654408) | 3621287M1 |
Step-by-step
- Run the engine to warm the oil so it carries the dirt out with it.
- Park on level ground, lower any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Let it stand a few minutes; hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump drain plug and let the oil drain completely. Refit it with a sound washer.
- Remove the oil filter with a filter wrench.
- Wipe the filter head clean and make sure the old rubber seal has come off.
- Oil the new seal and screw the filter on by hand until it touches, then about three-quarters of a turn more.
- Refill slowly to the full mark on the dipstick.
- Start the engine, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level after a few minutes.
Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter strap wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves
Fuel filter change and bleeding
Fuel · when needed
Dirt and water ruin the injection pump. No interval was found, so check your handbook. Check the glass bowl for water daily.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel filter element | 1 | CAV 296-type element; listed in Agriline's AD3.152 kit for the 240 | 1896096M1 |
| Sealing rings (one small, two large) | 1 | Fit new ones with the element | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out, chock the wheels and keep naked flames away.
- Close the fuel tap at the tank.
- Undo the centre bolt on top of the filter head and take the filter off.
- Fit new sealing rings (the small ring and the two large rings) and the new filter, then tighten the centre bolt. Do not over-tighten.
- Open the fuel tap and work the lift pump hand priming lever to fill the filter.
- Bleed out any air as your handbook describes (filter vent, then injection pump vents) until fuel comes out with no bubbles.
- Do not crank the starter for more than 30 seconds at a time; let it cool between tries.
Tools: Spanner or key for the centre bolt, Container for fuel, Rags
Valve tappet clearances
Engine · when needed
Tight tappets burn the valves; loose ones are noisy and lose power. No interval was found, so check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocker cover gasket | 1 | AD3.152 3-cylinder engine | 735057M1 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Setting them cold avoids burns from the hot manifold.
- Remove the rocker cover.
- Turn the engine until the valves of the cylinder you are checking are fully closed.
- Set inlet and exhaust to 0.30 mm (0.012 in) cold, or 0.25 mm (0.010 in) hot.
- Slacken the locknut, turn the adjuster until the feeler is a light drag, hold it and tighten the locknut. Recheck.
- Do all six valves, then refit the cover with a sound gasket and check for leaks.
Tools: Feeler gauges, Ring spanner and screwdriver for adjusters, Socket set
Fan belt tension
Engine · when needed
A slack belt slips, so the engine overheats and the battery goes flat. No interval was found, so check your handbook.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fan belt | 1 | A49 smooth belt, 1295 mm outside. Agriline also lists cogged XPA1307 (1687531M1) for the 240, so measure your old belt | 1688988M1 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Keep hands away from the fan.
- Press the long run between the alternator and crankshaft pulley with about 10 lb of force. It should move about 10 mm (3/8 in).
- To adjust, slacken the alternator pivot and adjusting link nuts, lever the alternator out gently, and retighten.
- Recheck the deflection. Use the right size belt and never put oil or grease on it.
Tools: Spanners, Rule, Lever bar

Known problems
Several 240 build versions
Owners report three versions of the 240 with different parts books (AGCO books 819786, 651615 and 651472). Check your serial number before ordering filters.
Transmission oil level depends on use
Running a tipping trailer, blade or loader from the gearbox oil draws oil out of the casing, so the level needs to be at MAX for that work.
Air in the fuel system
If the tank runs dry or the filter is changed, the engine will not run until air is bled out of the fuel system.
Mixed sources on oil change intervals
UK, US and Pakistan-built 240s have different books, and the hydraulic oil interval is given as 500 or 600 hours. Use your own handbook where you have it.
Repair guides
- Bleeding air out of the fuel system (3-cylinder Perkins) (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Engine will not start or dies after running out of fuel, after a filter change, or after a fuel pipe has been undone. Engine starts then stalls, or runs lumpy with bubbles in the filter bowl.
- Injector removal, testing and refitting (Specialist, 2–3 hours to remove and refit, plus testing by a diesel specialist): Black smoke, knocking on one cylinder, poor starting, loss of power or high fuel use. Slackening one injector pipe at a time makes no difference on the faulty cylinder.
- Head gasket replacement (Perkins 3.152) (Hard, 6–8 hours): Coolant loss with no visible leak, bubbles in the radiator, white smoke, oil in the coolant or water in the oil, or a blow between cylinders on a compression test.
- Water pump, thermostat and fan belt (3-cylinder Perkins) (Moderate, 2–4 hours): Coolant dripping from the pump's weep hole, a growling or wobbling pump pulley, overheating, or an engine that never warms up.
- Clutch pedal free travel adjustment (Easy, 30 minutes): Clutch slips under load or smells hot (too little free travel), or gears grate and the tractor creeps with the pedal down (too much).
- Splitting the tractor and replacing the clutch (Hard, 10–14 hours): Clutch slips even with correct free travel, judders, will not free, or the PTO will not stop with the pedal fully down. Squeal from the release bearing.
- Drum brake adjustment, balance and shoe renewal (Moderate, 1 hour to adjust; 3–4 hours to renew shoes both sides): Tractor pulls to one side with the pedals locked together, long pedal travel, weak brakes, or brakes that drag and get hot.
- Hydraulic lift not lifting, not holding or erratic (Moderate, 1–3 hours of checks; internal repairs longer): Linkage will not lift, lifts slowly or jerkily, will not reach full height, creeps down with a load, or will not lower.
- PTO will not stop or slips (two-stage clutch) (Hard, 30 minutes to check free travel; 10–14 hours if the tractor must be split): PTO shaft keeps turning with the clutch pedal pressed fully down, or the PTO slips under load while the main clutch is fine.
- Starter motor and Thermostart checks (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Starter turns slowly, clicks or spins without turning the engine; slow starting in cold weather.
- Track rod ends, toe-in and front axle pivot (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Wandering, slack steering, knocking over bumps, uneven front tyre wear, or the axle rocking sideways on its pivot.
