Engine oil and filter change

Engine · when needed

Clean oil is the cheapest protection the engine gets. No source gave the 35X change interval, so check your handbook. The filter is changed with the oil every time.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Engine oil1≈5.7 L; grade: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Oil filter (spin-on)1Agriline lists this spin-on filter for the 35 3-cylinder (cross-refers to 1447082M2). Some engines still have the original canister element, so check which you have3621287M1
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Run the engine to warm the oil, then let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump drain plug and let the oil drain fully. Refit it with a sound washer.
  4. Clean around the filter head. Unscrew the old filter (or on the canister type, undo the centre bolt and remove the bowl and element).
  5. Wipe the filter head face clean and make sure the old seal has come off.
  6. Smear clean oil on the new seal and fit the filter by hand until it touches, then about three-quarters of a turn more. Do not over-tighten.
  7. Refill to the full mark on the dipstick.
  8. Start the engine, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level after a few minutes.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter strap wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Transmission and hydraulic oil change

Transmission · when needed

The gearbox, back axle and hydraulics share about 30 litres of oil. No source gave a change interval, so check your handbook and change it if it is milky or dirty.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Transmission/hydraulic oil1SAE 80. ≈30.3 L; grade: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any implement fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Move the hydraulic lever to lower so no pressure is trapped in the lift.
  3. If the tractor has been working, let the oil cool a little; it can be hot enough to burn.
  4. Remove both transmission drain plugs. Owners warn that watery oil stays behind in one section if you only drain one.
  5. Clean and refit the drain plugs.
  6. Fill slowly. Oil takes time to pass from the gearbox to the hydraulic section, and filling fast makes it easy to overfill.
  7. Run the engine, raise and lower the linkage, lower it again, stop the engine and recheck the dipstick after it settles.

Tools: Large drain tray (40 L), Spanners for both drain plugs, Funnel or pump, Rags

Fuel filter change and bleeding

Fuel · when needed

The DPA injection pump is ruined by dirt or water. No source gave a 35X interval or part number, so check your handbook.

Filter sealing rings1Check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out, chock the wheels and keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean the outside of the filter before opening it.
  3. Drain the filter, undo the centre bolt and remove the element. Wipe the bowl clean.
  4. Fit the new element with new sealing rings and tighten the centre bolt. Do not over-tighten.
  5. Bleed the system as your handbook describes: usually the filter vent first, then the injection pump vents, using the lift pump hand lever until fuel comes out with no bubbles.
  6. Do not crank the starter for more than 30 seconds at a time; let it cool between tries.

Tools: Spanners, Container for fuel, Lint-free rag

Known problems

Hard cold starting

The Ferguson Club notes the 35X needs a good battery and a working inlet manifold heater plug to start well in cold weather.

One oil for everything

The 35X was designed to run one oil type in the engine, gearbox, hydraulics and steering box. Find out what is in yours before topping up, and don't mix oils without checking.

Water left in the transmission

The gearbox and hydraulic sections each have a drain plug. Owners report that watery oil stays behind if only one is drained.

Overfilling the transmission

Oil passes slowly from the gearbox into the hydraulic section, so a fast fill reads low and gets topped up too far. Fill slowly and recheck after it settles.

PTO speed varies by year

Sources give 540 rpm at 1,500 engine rpm, and 1,700 rpm on tractors after 1963. Check the PTO speed on your tractor before using 540 rpm implements.
