Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 250 hours
TractorData gives a 250-hour oil change for the 390, and the Perkins handbook for this engine family also gives 250 hours with low-sulphur fuel (shorter with high-sulphur fuel). The filter is changed every time. Perkins also sets a time limit in months: check your handbook.

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower any implement to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Run the engine to warm the oil, stop it and let it stand a few minutes. Warm oil drains better, but hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump drain plug and let the oil drain fully. Refit it with a sound washer.
- Clean around the filter head, then unscrew the old filter. Make sure the old seal has come off with it.
- Smear clean oil on the new seal and screw the filter on by hand until it touches, then tighten as the filter says. Do not over-tighten.
- Fill to the full mark on the dipstick.
- Start the engine, check for leaks at the filter and plug, stop it and recheck the level after a few minutes.

Fuel filter element and pre-filter

Dirt or water in diesel ruins the injection pump and injectors. The Perkins handbook lists renewing the fuel filter element and checking the pre-filter for water, but the interval was not readable in the copy used, so check your handbook.

Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames well away.
- Clean the outside of the filter thoroughly before opening it.
- Drain the filter into a container, remove the element and throw it away with its old seals.
- Fit the new element with new seals.
- Bleed the air out of the fuel system as the handbook shows. The Perkins handbook says the method depends on which injection pump is fitted.
- Start the engine and check for leaks. Do not crank for more than 30 seconds at a time; let the starter cool between tries.

Air cleaner elements

Dust that gets past the air cleaner wears the bores and rings fast. The Perkins handbook says empty the dust bowl and clean or renew the element, more often in dusty work; the hour figure was not readable, so go by the restriction indicator and check your handbook.

Step-by-step
- Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the element out.
- Open the air cleaner and take out the outer element. Only remove the inner element when you are replacing it.
- Wipe the inside of the housing with a damp cloth. Do not let dirt fall into the intake.
- Fit the new element(s) and check the seals sit evenly. Empty the dust bowl or unloader valve.
- Note: 390s were built with more than one air cleaner layout (Agriline's kit is for tractors with the pre-cleaner through the bonnet), so check the size before buying.

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change
Transmission · when needed
Old or dirty oil wears the gearbox, the lift pump and the valves. The shop manual gives the fill (about 43.4 L, or 47.4 L with a spacer or 4WD transfer housing), but no source used gives the interval or oil type, so check your handbook. The hydraulic filter is changed with the oil every time.

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any implement or loader fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- With the engine off, move the lift and spool levers to relieve any trapped hydraulic pressure before undoing anything.
- Let the oil cool to warm, not hot, then drain it from the drain plugs. Wear gloves.
- Change the hydraulic filter element, cleaning the housing first.
- Refit the plugs and fill with the oil your handbook specifies to the dipstick or level plug.
- Run the engine, raise and lower the linkage a few times, lower it again, stop the engine and recheck the level.

Coolant drain and refill
Cooling · when needed
Antifreeze protects against frost and corrosion but weakens over time. No source used gives the 390's interval, so check your handbook and test the strength each autumn.

Step-by-step
- Only work on a cold engine. Turn the radiator cap slowly to let any pressure out before removing it.
- Open the drain taps and let the coolant out into a tray. Dispose of it properly; it is poisonous to animals.
- Flush through with clean water, close the taps and refill with the mix your handbook gives.
- Run the engine to warm up, let it cool and top up again.
- Clean chaff and dirt off the radiator fins while you are there.

Valve tip clearances
Engine · when needed
Clearances that are too tight burn the valves; too loose and the engine is noisy and down on power. The shop manual gives 0.30 mm inlet and exhaust with the engine cold (the Perkins engine handbook says 0.25 mm), and no interval was readable, so check your handbook.

Step-by-step
- Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Remove the rocker cover.
- Turn the engine until the valves you are checking are fully closed (rocker loose).
- With the engine cold, check the gap between rocker and valve tip with a feeler gauge: 0.30 mm (0.012 in) inlet and exhaust.
- If needed, slacken the locknut, turn the screw until the feeler is a light drag, hold it and tighten the locknut. Recheck.
- Repeat for every valve, then refit the cover with a sound gasket and check for oil leaks.

Known problems
Brakes and clutch need adjusting
Owners' guides say the brakes and clutch on a 390 need adjusting more often as they age, and older tractors may need them renewed.
Oil filter depends on serial number
The MF dealer listing for the 390's oil filter says the right part depends on serial number, so check the old filter or your parts book before buying.
More than one air cleaner layout
Air filter kits are sold for 390s with the pre-cleaner through the bonnet, and several outer and inner element sizes are listed. Measure the old element first.
Many gearbox options
The 390 was sold with five different gearboxes, from an 8-speed to the 18-speed Speedshift, so parts and procedures vary. Know which one you have.
Repair guides
- Identify your engine, gearbox and serial number before buying parts (Easy, 30 minutes): Wrong filter, gasket or oil quantity arrives; parts lists give two or more numbers for the same model; the transmission takes a different amount of oil from the book figure.
- Brakes pulling or pedals too low (adjustment and bleeding) (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Pedals travel further than they used to, the tractor pulls to one side when the pedals are latched together, a spongy pedal, or weak braking on a trailer or slope.
- Clutch slipping or dragging (linkage adjustment) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Gears grate or the tractor creeps with the pedal down; the engine revs rise without the tractor pulling under load; the PTO keeps turning when it should stop; very little free play at the pedal.
- Overheating: water pump and thermostat (Perkins A4.248) (Moderate, 2–4 hours): Temperature gauge climbing, coolant weeping from the pump drain hole, a growl or play at the fan pulley, or the engine slow to warm up.
- Head gasket replacement (Perkins A4.248) (Hard, 8–12 hours): Coolant loss with no visible leak, white exhaust smoke, bubbles in the radiator, oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, or compression leaking between cylinders.
- Misfire, hard starting or air in the fuel: atomisers and bleeding (Perkins A4.248) (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Engine runs lumpy or knocks, black smoke, hard starting, or it stops after a filter change or running out of fuel.
- Linkage will not lift, lifts slowly or drops (owner checks) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Linkage will not lift a load it used to, lifts slowly when hot, creeps down with the engine stopped, or hunts up and down.
- PTO slips, will not engage or keeps turning (owner checks) (Moderate, 1–2 hours of checks): PTO slips under load, will not engage, takes a long time to pick up, or keeps turning after being switched off.
- Front wheel bearings, spindles and axle pivot (2WD) (Moderate, 2–4 hours per side): Front wheel wobbles when rocked, grinding or rumble from a hub, uneven tyre wear, steering wander, or knocking from the axle pivot.
- 4WD front axle: swivel (kingpin) and hub bearing play, oil leaks (Hard, 1 hour to check; a day or more per side to rebuild): Front wheel moves when rocked, clunk when changing direction, oil on the inside of a front wheel, uneven tyre wear, or a growl from a front hub.
- Slow cranking, no start or battery not charging: starter and alternator (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Starter clicks but does not turn, slow cranking, battery warning lamp stays on, battery flat every morning, or a whine from the alternator.
