Fuel filter element change

Fuel · every 200 hours or every 6 months

The Perkins 1000 Series handbook says renew the fuel filter element(s) at the first service and then every 200 hours or 6 months, and check the pre-filter for water every day. Perkins warns that the wrong element can damage the injection pump.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Fuel filter element (CAV, long)1112 mm long CAV-type element (also 1896287M91, Perkins 26560602)3405419M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames well away.
  2. Clean the outside of the filter head and bowl thoroughly.
  3. Drain the filter, remove the element and throw it away with its old seals.
  4. Fit the new element with new seals.
  5. Bleed the air out as the handbook describes (the Perkins handbook gives the method for each filter and pump type).
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Spanners, Container for fuel, Lint-free rags

Coolant drain and refill

Cooling · every 2 years

The Perkins 1000 Series handbook says renew the antifreeze every two years (or every six months if an inhibitor is used instead of antifreeze).

PartQtyNotesPart number
Antifreeze with corrosion inhibitor1About 50/50 with water, ≈17.5 L systemcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Turn the radiator or header tank cap slowly to let pressure out.
  2. Drain the radiator and block into a tray. Dispose of old coolant properly.
  3. Flush through with clean water, close the drains and refill with a 50/50 mix.
  4. Run the engine to warm up with the heater on, let it cool and top up.

Tools: Drain tray, Hose, Antifreeze tester

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · when needed

The Perkins 1000 Series handbook schedule has 200-hour/6-month and 400-hour/12-month columns, but the copy used does not show which one the oil change sits in, and the MF handbook was not available. Check your handbook. Perkins says the oil interval also depends on fuel sulphur, while the filter interval does not. Change the filter every time.

Oil filter (spin-on)1Perkins number for 1004-series engines; confirm by your engine number2654403
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Run the engine to warm the oil, stop it and let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully. Refit the plug with a sound washer.
  4. Unscrew the old filter, check the old seal came off with it, and wipe the head clean.
  5. Oil the new seal and fit the filter by hand as it says on the filter.
  6. Fill to the full mark on the dipstick, run the engine, check for leaks, stop and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Air cleaner elements

Engine · when needed

Dust wears the engine fast. Replace the elements when the restriction indicator shows or as your handbook says; the hour figure was not available in the sources used.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Inner (safety) air filter1For build number prefix AH or AK; 3901465M2 also listed3901465M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the element out.
  2. Open the air cleaner housing and take out the outer element. Only remove the inner element when replacing it.
  3. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth; do not let dirt fall into the intake.
  4. Fit the new elements and check the seals sit evenly. Check the intake hoses and clips.
  5. Check your build number prefix and air cleaner box length before buying; there is a serial break.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change

Transmission · when needed

Old oil wears the gearbox, the power shuttle clutches and the hydraulic pump. No source used gives the 4255's interval, oil type or full fill, so check your handbook. Change the filter(s) with the oil every time.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any loader fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, work the lift and spool levers to relieve any trapped hydraulic pressure.
  3. Let the oil cool to warm, not hot, then drain it. Wear gloves.
  4. Change the filter(s), cleaning around each one first.
  5. Refit the plugs and fill with the specified oil to the correct level.
  6. Run the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything, stop and recheck the level.

Tools: Large drain tray (60 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel

Valve tip clearances

Engine · when needed

Wrong clearances cost power and can burn valves. The Perkins handbook gives inlet 0.20 mm and exhaust 0.45 mm, hot or cold, and says this needs a trained person; the interval was not readable in the copy used, so check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Rocker cover gasket1For build number prefix AK (also 4223552M91)4222997M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Remove the rocker cover.
  3. Turn the engine until the valves you are checking are fully closed.
  4. Check with a feeler gauge: inlet 0.20 mm (0.008 in), exhaust 0.45 mm (0.018 in).
  5. Adjust if needed, lock the nut and recheck, then refit the cover with a sound gasket.

Tools: Feeler gauges, Ring spanner and screwdriver, Socket set

Known problems

Air filters change at a build number break

Agriline lists different air filters by build number prefix (AH or AK) and air cleaner box length, so check before buying.

Sources disagree on the engine

TractorData has two 4255 entries: one says Perkins 1004.4TW, the other a 1004T. Check the engine plate before buying engine parts.

Early and late builds differ

Tyre sizes, fuel tanks and dates differ between the 1997–1999 and later 4255 listings, and the AGCO handbook for cab tractors starts at serial K27456 (2001). Use the handbook for your serial number.

Three different gearboxes

The 4255 was sold with a 12x12 power shuttle, a 24x24 power shuttle with power shift, or an 18x6 Speedshift. Oil fills and filters may differ, so know which you have.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
