Service jobs and parts

Drain water from the fuel tank

Fuel · every 50 hours

The Perkins 1104D handbook says drain water and sediment from the fuel tank every 50 hours or weekly. Water in diesel causes rust and injector damage.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and keep naked flames away.
  2. Open the tank drain (if fitted) and let water and sediment run out until clean fuel shows.
  3. Close the drain and dispose of the waste properly.

Tools: Container, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

The Perkins 1104D handbook lists engine oil and filter at 250 hours and also at 500 hours or 1 year; which applies depends on the engine build and use, and the MF handbook was not available. 250 hours is used here to be safe: check your handbook. Change the filter every time.

Oil filter1Spin-on, 175 mm long (Perkins 2654407); Agriline lists it for the 54551447031M2
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Perkins says drain the oil warm, never cold. Run the engine to working temperature, stop it and let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully into a container big enough to hold it. Refit the plug.
  4. Remove the old filter, check the seal came off with it and wipe the head clean.
  5. Oil the new seal and fit the filter by hand as marked on it.
  6. Fill to the full mark. Do not over- or under-fill; Perkins warns this can damage the engine.
  7. Run the engine, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (15 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Fuel filters (primary and secondary)

Fuel · every 500 hours or every year

The Perkins 1104D handbook says replace the primary filter (water separator) element and the secondary filter every 500 hours or 1 year, and drain the water separator daily. Dirt and water wreck the injection system.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Primary filter / water separator element1Tier 3 tractors. Tier 2 tractors have a single cartridge, 4224811M1, that replaces the whole canister4226708M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filters so no dirt can get in.
  3. Drain the water separator, then remove the old filter(s).
  4. Fit the new filters with their seals, hand-tight.
  5. Prime the fuel system as the handbook describes before starting.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Filter wrench, Container for fuel, Rags

Air cleaner elements

Engine · every 500 hours or every year

The Perkins 1104D handbook says clean or replace the dual-element air cleaner every 500 hours or 1 year, or sooner when the restriction indicator shows. Check the pre-cleaner daily.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Inner (safety) air filter1Agriline lists this for the 5455; 3901465M2 also listed3901465M1
Outer air filter1Steep-nose bonnet; pairs with inner 3901465M1. Standard-bonnet Tier 2 tractors take outer 3901475M1 with inner 3901476M13901464M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the element out.
  2. Open the housing and take out the outer element. Only remove the inner element when replacing it.
  3. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth; do not let dirt fall into the intake.
  4. Fit the new elements, check the seals and close the housing. Reset the restriction indicator if fitted.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Valve lash check and adjust

Engine · every 1,000 hours

The Perkins 1104D handbook says check the valve lash at the first 500 hours, then every 1,000 hours, and that a trained person should do it. Wrong lash costs power and can burn valves. The figure depends on the engine: the Perkins 1104D electronic engine (Tier 3) is 0.35 mm inlet and exhaust, but the Perkins 1103/1104 industrial engine manual gives 0.20 mm inlet and 0.45 mm exhaust, cold, which is the figure for the mechanical 1104C of the Tier 2 tractor. Check the engine plate before setting anything.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Rocker cover gasket14224954M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Let the engine cool before working on it.
  2. Remove the rocker cover.
  3. Turn the engine until the valves you are checking are fully closed.
  4. Check with a feeler gauge: 0.35 mm (0.013 in) inlet and exhaust on the 1104D. Confirm the figure for your engine first.
  5. Adjust if needed, lock the nut and recheck, then refit the cover with a sound gasket.

Tools: Feeler gauges, Spanners, Engine turning tool

Coolant change

Cooling · every 3,000 hours or every 2 years

The Perkins 1104D handbook says change commercial heavy-duty coolant every 3,000 hours or 2 years (Perkins long-life coolant lasts 12,000 hours or 6 years), and test and top up the coolant additive every 500 hours or 1 year.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Coolant1≈16.6 L; type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Turn the header tank cap slowly to let pressure out.
  2. Drain the radiator and block into a tray. Dispose of old coolant properly.
  3. Refit the drains and fill with the coolant your handbook specifies.
  4. Run the engine to working temperature with the heater on, let it cool and top up.
  5. Clean the radiator fins while you are there (Perkins lists this every 500 hours or 1 year).

Tools: Drain tray, Hose, Coolant tester

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change

Transmission · when needed

Old oil wears the gearbox, shuttle clutches and hydraulic pump. The MF workshop manual gives the fill, but no source used gives the interval or oil type, so check your handbook. Change the filters with the oil every time.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Transmission oil1≈62 L mechanical shuttle or ≈74 L power shuttle; type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Hydraulic oil filters2Main hydraulic filter. Power-shuttle tractors also have transmission filter 3792287M1; tractors with a trailer brake valve take 3619712M1. Check which yours has3616579M1
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any loader fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, work the lift and spool levers to relieve any trapped hydraulic pressure.
  3. Let the oil cool to warm, not hot, then drain it. Wear gloves.
  4. Change the filters, cleaning around each one first.
  5. Refit the plugs and fill with the specified oil to the correct level.
  6. Run the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything, stop and recheck the level.

Tools: Large drain tray (80 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel

Front axle and final drive oil change (4WD)

Front axle · when needed

The MF workshop manual gives the fills, but no source used gives the interval or oil type, so check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Axle oil1Housing ≈5.5 L plus ≈0.9 L per final drive; type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the front wheels so each final drive plug is where the handbook shows for draining.
  3. Drain the axle housing and both final drives.
  4. Refit the drain plugs and fill each to its level plug.
  5. Wipe the axle clean so you can spot leaks later.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Known problems

Tier 2 and Tier 3 engines take different filters

Agriline sells separate kits for Tier 2 and Tier 3 engines and for standard and Hi-Vis bonnets. Check your engine and bonnet before ordering.

Engine name differs between sources

Agriline lists the 5455 engine as 1104C-44/44T for both Tier 2 and Tier 3, while another supplier lists a 1104D-E44TA for the Tier 3 (2008 on). Check the engine plate.

Two transmission oil fills

The workshop manual gives ≈62 L with the mechanical shuttle and ≈74 L with the power shuttle. Fill to the level mark, not by volume alone.

Engine oil interval is not clear-cut

The Perkins handbook lists the oil change at both 250 hours and 500 hours or 1 year. Use your MF handbook; if in doubt, change at 250 hours.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
