Drain water from the fuel tank

Fuel · every 50 hours

The Perkins 1106D handbook says drain water and sediment from the fuel tank every 50 hours or weekly.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and keep naked flames away.
  2. Open the tank drain (if fitted) and let water and sediment run out until clean fuel shows.
  3. Close the drain and dispose of the waste properly.

Tools: Container, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours or every year

The Perkins 1106D handbook lists engine oil and filter at 250 hours and also at 500 hours or 1 year; which applies depends on the engine build and use, and the MF handbook was not available. 250 hours is used here to be safe: check your handbook. Change the filter every time.

Engine oil1≈14.5 L; grade: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Oil filter (spin-on, M24 x 1.5, 210 mm)1Agriline lists it for the 6480 (also Perkins 2654A111 / 4627133). One seller lists it for Tier 3 engines, so check it fits a 1106C4226293M1
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements and any loader to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Perkins says drain the oil warm, never cold. Run the engine to working temperature, stop it and let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
  3. Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully into a container big enough to hold about 16 L. Refit the plug.
  4. Remove the old filter, check the seal came off with it and wipe the head clean.
  5. Oil the new seal and fit the filter by hand as marked on it.
  6. Fill to the full mark. Do not over- or under-fill.
  7. Run the engine, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Spanner for sump plug, Filter wrench, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Fuel filters (primary and secondary)

Fuel · every 500 hours or every year

The Perkins 1106D handbook says replace the primary filter (water separator) element and the secondary filter every 500 hours or 1 year, and drain the water separator daily. Agriline's engine kit for the 6480 holds three fuel filters, one of them a 150-micron filter.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Keep naked flames away.
  2. Clean around the filters so no dirt can get in. Common-rail systems are very sensitive to dirt.
  3. Drain the water separator, then remove the old filters.
  4. Fit the new filters with their seals, hand-tight.
  5. Prime the fuel system as the handbook describes before starting.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Tools: Filter wrench, Container for fuel, Rags

Air cleaner elements

Engine · every 500 hours or every year

The Perkins 1106D handbook says clean or replace the air cleaner elements every 500 hours or 1 year, or sooner when the restriction indicator shows. Check the pre-cleaner daily.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Outer air filter1Tier 2 kit (also 3658044M1). Tier 3 tractors: Agriline lists 4288978M14271467M1
Inner (safety) air filter1407 mm long (also 3658045M1)4271468M1
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the element out.
  2. Open the housing and take out the outer element. Only remove the inner element when replacing it.
  3. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth; do not let dirt fall into the intake.
  4. Fit the new elements, check the seals and close the housing. Reset the restriction indicator if fitted.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Valve lash check and adjust

Engine · every 1,000 hours

The Perkins 1106D handbook says check the valve lash at the first 500 hours, then every 1,000 hours, by a trained person. The clearance figure was not in the pages used: check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Rocker cover gasket1Check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Let the engine cool before working on it.
  2. Remove the rocker cover.
  3. Turn the engine until the valves you are checking are fully closed.
  4. Check each valve with a feeler gauge against the figure in your handbook.
  5. Adjust if needed, lock the nut and recheck, then refit the cover with a sound gasket.

Tools: Feeler gauges, Spanners, Engine turning tool

Coolant change

Cooling · every 3,000 hours or every 2 years

The Perkins 1106D handbook schedule has a 3,000 hours or 2 years heading and a 12,000 hours or 6 years heading for long-life coolant, but the copy used was jumbled and one reading puts heavy-duty coolant at 4,000 hours. The 1104D handbook from the same family clearly says 3,000 hours or 2 years, so that is used here: check your handbook. Test and top up the coolant additive every 500 hours or 1 year.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Coolant1≈25.6 L; type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Turn the header tank cap slowly to let pressure out.
  2. Drain the radiator and block into a tray. Dispose of old coolant properly.
  3. Refit the drains and fill with the coolant your handbook specifies.
  4. Run the engine to working temperature with the heater on, let it cool and top up.
  5. Clean the radiator and coolers while you are there (Perkins lists radiator cleaning every 500 hours or 1 year).

Tools: Drain tray (30 L), Hose, Coolant tester

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filter change

Transmission · when needed

The Dyna-6 clutches and the closed-centre hydraulic pump need clean oil. The MF workshop manual gives the fill, but no source used gives the interval or oil type, so check your handbook. Change the filters with the oil every time.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage, front linkage and any loader fully, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, work the spool and linkage controls to relieve trapped pressure. Closed-centre systems hold pressure, so take care when opening anything.
  3. Let the oil cool to warm, not hot, then drain it. Wear gloves.
  4. Change the filters, cleaning around each one first.
  5. Refit the plugs and fill with the specified oil to the correct level.
  6. Run the engine, work the hydraulics through their full travel, lower everything, stop and recheck the level.

Tools: Large drain tray (80 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel

Front axle and final drive oil change (4WD)

Front axle · when needed

The MF workshop manual gives the fills for fixed and suspended axles, but no source used gives the interval or oil type, so check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Axle oil1Fixed: ≈6 L plus ≈0.7 L per final drive. Suspended: ≈8.5 L plus ≈0.6 L per final drive. Type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the front wheels so each final drive plug is where the handbook shows for draining.
  3. Drain the axle housing and both final drives.
  4. Refit the drain plugs and fill each to its level plug.
  5. Wipe the axle clean so you can spot leaks later.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Known problems

Two different engines

Earlier 6480s have the 6.0 L 1106C-E60TA and later ones the 6.6 L 1106D-E66TA. Filters and parts differ, so check the engine plate before ordering.

Dyna-6 repairs are costly

Owner reports say Dyna-6 gearbox repairs can be expensive. Keep the oil and filters changed and fix shift faults early.

Dynashift or Dyna-6

Early tractors may have Dynashift (≈72 L) rather than Dyna-6 (≈65 L), so the oil fill differs. Fill to the level mark.

Closed-centre hydraulics hold pressure

The 6480 has closed-centre hydraulics with an internal filter. Lower everything and relieve pressure before opening any line or filter.

Engine oil interval is not clear-cut

The Perkins handbook lists the oil change at both 250 hours and 500 hours or 1 year. Use your MF handbook; if in doubt, change at 250 hours.

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
