Service jobs and parts
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 600 hours
Massey Ferguson's 6S brochure gives 600-hour engine service intervals. Oil and filter are changed together. Check your handbook for an annual limit, the oil grade and the quantity.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | Grade and quantity: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Engine oil filter | 1 | Number from an MF parts specialist's 6S listing; confirm with your serial number | V836679586 |
Step-by-step
- Warm the engine, park on level ground, lower the linkage, loader and any implement, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
- Let it stand a few minutes. Hot oil burns, so wear gloves.
- Remove the sump plug and let the oil drain fully.
- Remove the filter, check the old seal came off, and wipe the filter head clean.
- Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight.
- Refit the plug and fill with the oil your handbook specifies to the full mark.
- Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it and recheck the level.
Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves
Fuel filters and water separator
Fuel · every 600 hours

- Clean around the filters before opening anything.
- Drain any water from the separator bowl into a container.
- Remove the old filters and fit the new ones with clean seals.

Known problems
Part numbers need your serial number
The filter numbers here come from parts sellers' listings, not from AGCO's own filter sheet, and the fuel filter listings disagree. Confirm with your dealer before ordering.
High output from four cylinders
The 6S gets up to 200 hp from a 4.9 L four-cylinder with Engine Power Management. No known-fault reports were found, so keep strictly to the 600-hour services and keep service records.
Repair guides
- Dyna-4 / Dyna-6 will not change range: sensor, solenoid and switch checks (Specialist, 1 hour of checks; dealer for sensors and solenoids): Tractor will not shift between ranges (for example 3D to 4A), will not move at all, gearbox fault code, crunch when changing range on the road.
- All-in-One SCR and AdBlue warnings: owner checks (Specialist, 30 minutes of checks; dealer for faults): AdBlue level or quality warning, emissions fault light, engine power reduced, white crystals around the dosing parts.
- MF 6S down on power: owner checks before calling the dealer (Moderate, 1 hour): Tractor feels flat, does not reach expected power, extra power does not seem to come in, smoke, fault codes.
- Suspended front axle: harsh ride, leaks and warnings (Specialist, 45 minutes of checks; dealer for accumulators): Front end bounces or crashes over bumps, axle stays high or low, suspension warning, oil on the cylinders or hoses.
- Spool valves and rear linkage slow or not working: owner checks (Moderate, 1 hour; dealer for pressure tests): Linkage will not lift or lifts slowly, spool valve does nothing, implement creeps down, hydraulics weak when hot.
- Air or hydraulic trailer brakes not working: owner checks (Moderate, 30–60 minutes): Trailer brakes weak, slow to release or not working, air warning, air leaking at the couplings.
- Cleaning the cooling pack and checking the fan (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Temperature gauge climbs under load, overheating warning, air con weak, power reduced in hot dusty work, chaff matted on the grille.
- Order the right parts: Massey Ferguson, New Holland and Case IH build dates (Easy, 30 minutes): Wrong filter arrives, sellers list different numbers for the same tractor, earlier-model parts do not fit.
- PTO will not engage or drops out: owner checks (Moderate, 30–60 minutes): PTO will not start, starts then stops, slips under load, PTO warning, fender button works but cab switch does not (or the reverse).
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
