  1. Lower the mower to the ground, disconnect the PTO, stop the engine and take the key out. Wait for the rotor to stop completely.
  2. Check all nuts and bolts are tight.
  3. Check belt tension: 15 mm deflection under 10 kg.
  4. Check the flails; replace missing or damaged ones straight away, with the one diametrically opposite.
  5. Check the guards, grease all points, check the gearbox oil level and clear anything wrapped in the rotor.
  6. Check the frame and three-point hitch are sound.

Gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every year

McConnel says change the gearbox oil every 12 months and check the level every 8 hours. The gearbox takes 1.2 L of SAE 90; the half shaft takes 0.9 L of SAE 90 (the manual gives no change interval for the half shaft: check its level with the gearbox).

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Funnel

Storage

Storage · every year

McConnel says clean and lubricate the mower before storage, keep it dry, and check for worn or damaged parts so they can be ordered for next season.

Step-by-step
  1. On firm level ground, lower the mower, stop the tractor, take the key out and remove the PTO shaft.
  2. Chock the rear roller, then remove the top link and lower links and drive the tractor clear.
  3. Clean and grease the mower and store it dry under cover.
  4. List worn flails, belts or bearings and order them before the season.

Tools: Pressure washer, Grease gun, Chocks

Adjust or replace drive belts

Belts · when needed

Belts must be kept at 15 mm deflection under 10 kg. McConnel says replace them as a complete set and re-tension after the first 2 hours. There is no fixed replacement interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the mower, disconnect the PTO, stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the mower with the belt guard off.
  2. Remove the belt cover. Slacken the 4 gearbox retaining nuts and the upper pulley fixing bolts.
  3. Turn the adjuster (clockwise tightens) to 15 mm deflection under 10 kg. Move the gearbox the same distance as the upper pulley so the half shaft stays parallel to the rotor.
  4. Retighten the pulley bolts, the 4 gearbox nuts and the adjuster lock nut. Check the taper lock bolts are at 45 Nm.
  5. Refit the belt guard. Recheck new belts after 2 hours.

Rotor vibration

Stop at once: usually a missing or broken flail. If it continues the rotor must be checked and rebalanced.

Belts overheating

Slipping belts, flails hitting the ground or too high a forward speed.

Flail type and size

Paddles for material up to 15 mm, Y-blades to 30 mm, hammers to 50 mm; Y-blades and paddles need a different rotor.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your implement.
