Grease all points (daily, and before storage)
Lubrication · every 8 hours
McConnel says grease every point on the machine daily, and the warning label says every 8 working hours. Grease fully before first use and again before storing the machine.

Step-by-step
Lower the flail head to the ground, switch off the PTO, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Wipe each grease nipple clean and give it grease until a little fresh grease shows at the joint. The handbook has a lubrication diagram showing every point.
Include the rotor bearings and the roller bearings on the head.
Wipe off the extra grease so dirt does not stick to it.
Tools: Grease gun, Rag
Flails, flail bolts and rotor bolts
Flail head · every 8 hours
McConnel's daily list says check for broken or damaged flails and check the flail head nuts and bolts are tight. The torque is 203 Nm for the flail, rotor and roller bracket bolts, and 52 Nm for the motor bolts and roller end cap screws. The operator manual does not list flail part numbers, so check your parts book.

Step-by-step
Lower the head to the ground, switch off the PTO, stop the tractor, take the key out and wait for the rotor to stop.
Look at every flail. A broken or lost one must be replaced; replace flails in pairs so the rotor stays balanced.
Check the flail bolts and rotor bolts at 203 Nm and the motor bolts and roller end cap screws at 52 Nm.
Check the front hood, flaps and roller. McConnel says replace a rubber flap as soon as a split is half the flap height.
Tools: Torque wrench, Sockets and spanners, Eye protection and gloves
Hydraulic hoses and fittings
Hydraulics · every 8 hours
McConnel says check for oil leaks and damaged hoses daily. Replace hoses one at a time and cross the flail hoses at the dipper and head pivots as the original was. Do not over-tighten fittings, and do not use jointing compound.

Hose, O-rings and bonded seals
1
Soft-seal O-rings 10.000.01 to 10.000.06; bonded seals 8650102 to 8650108, by BSP size
check your handbook
Step-by-step
With the machine stopped and pressure released, look along every hose for chafing, wet fittings and damaged braid.
A hose with damage to the outer cover only can be taped over; one with damaged braid should be replaced at the earliest chance.
Replace one hose at a time and hold the union with a second spanner. Torque soft-seal nuts to 24 Nm (1/4"), 33 Nm (3/8"), 44 Nm (1/2"), 58 Nm (5/8"), 84 Nm (3/4"), 115 Nm (1").
Because soft seals hold pressure at finger tight, slacken the nut and flex the hose to release pressure before taking a fitting apart.
Tools: Spanners (two per fitting), Torque wrench, Cardboard for leak checking
Clean the oil cooler
Hydraulics · every 8 hours
McConnel says clean the cooler matrix daily, and more often in dust. A blocked cooler overheats the oil. Use an air line rather than a pressure washer.
Step-by-step
Stop the machine and let it cool.
Blow the cooler matrix clear from the clean side with an air line.
Look for bent fins and oil weeping from the cooler joints.
Tools: Compressed air line, Soft brush
PTO shaft grease: joints and tubes, and shield points
PTO shaft · every 25 hours
McConnel says grease the PTO shaft universal joints and tubes every 25 hours and the shield lubrication points every 100 hours. Each end has two points, one for the joint and one for the rotating shield ring.

Step-by-step
Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Prise open the shield clasps with screwdrivers and slide the shield back to reach the joint grease point and the shield ring grease point.
Grease the joints and the sliding tubes every 25 hours. Grease the shield ring points every 100 hours.
Slide the shield back and make sure the clasps re-engage. Fit the torque chains so the shield cannot turn.
Tools: Grease gun, Screwdrivers
Arm bushes and slide pads
Arms · every 100 hours
McConnel says check the bushes for wear every 100 hours, taking off the end caps where possible so you can see them. Check wear on the telescopic arm pads weekly where fitted.

Check all nuts and bolts for tightness weekly.

Hydraulic return filter change (and oil, with strainers, if it has gone off)
Hydraulics · every 500 hours or every year
McConnel says change the 25 micron return line element after the first 100 hours or 12 months (whichever comes first) and then every 500 hours or annually. It gives no fixed oil change: change the oil when it is dark, smells burnt, or looks milky, and when you do, fit a new return element and strainer and change the return element again after 100 hours of work. A blocked element goes into bypass with no warning, so keep a note of the hours.

Step-by-step
Lower the flail head to the ground, switch off the PTO, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Clean around the filter head and the tank cap before opening anything. Dirt is the main cause of hydraulic failures.
Change the return line element. On a new machine do this at 100 hours, then every 500 hours or once a year.
Look at the oil. If it is dark, smells burnt or looks yellow or milky, drain the tank, fit new strainers and a new return element, and refill with clean oil of the right grade.
Refill to between the min and max marks on the tank gauge. Run the PTO for a minute or so with the rotor off so the oil passes through the filter, then top up. The level falls as the circuit fills.
If you changed the oil, change the return element again after 100 hours of work.

PTO gearbox oil change
Gearbox · every 500 hours or every year
McConnel says change the gearbox oil after the first 50 hours, then every year or 500 hours, whichever is first, and check the level weekly. It uses 75W-90 fully synthetic gear oil.

Step-by-step
Lower the head, switch off the PTO, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Drain the gearbox through the drain plug on the base, ideally while the oil is warm.
Refit the drain plug. Take out the filler and level plugs and pour oil in through the filler until it starts to run from the level plug hole.
Refit both plugs and tighten them. On a new machine make the first change at 50 hours.
Tools: Small drain tray, Spanners, Funnel
Tank breather change
Hydraulics · every year
McConnel says replace the 25 micron absolute tank breather every year under normal work, and every 6 months in dry, dusty conditions, to reduce the risk of pump cavitation.

Tools: Spanner, Clean rag

Storage · every year
McConnel says grease all points before storage, lightly coat the exposed ram rods with grease if the machine stands a long time (wipe it off before the rams are next moved), cover the controls with canvas, not a plastic fertiliser bag, and keep the slew and lift locks closed.

Step-by-step
Wash the machine and remove cut vegetation, especially from the slew post and tank area.
Grease every point fully, as for the daily service.
Smear grease on the exposed parts of the ram rods and wipe it off before the rams are next moved.
Close the slew and lift locks and set the storage legs.
Tie canvas over the controls. Do not use a plastic fertiliser bag, which can cause rapid corrosion.
In spring, check the gearbox and tank levels and grease again before the first day's work.

McConnel warns that a blocked return element bypasses with no symptoms, so go by hours worked, not by how the machine feels.
Gearbox capacity
The manual lists both 0.7 L and 0.6 L for two gearbox types. Read the capacity off your own gearbox before filling.
Water in the oil
Condensation turns the oil milky and can block the return filter. McConnel says that oil needs replacing; water cannot be filtered out.
