McHale's every-day list: the lift arm and table pivots work hard on every bale. It singles out the outer ram pin on the bale lift arm, which carries a very heavy load.

Step-by-step

Park on level ground, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Lock the bale lift arm with its transport lock.
Grease the bale lift arm hinges and the lift arm cylinder ends.
Grease the sub-chassis pivots, the table tip cylinder ends, the bale damper hinges and damper cylinder ends, and the side-tip damper hinges if fitted.
Check the outer ram pin on the bale lift arm. If it is hard to grease or has more than 2 mm of play, replace it. Support the arm with slings first and keep the transport lock on.
Check the wheel nuts and tyre pressures (3.4 bar field, 3.2 bar road on 340/55-16).
Check the guards and safety devices, look for oil leaks and damaged pipes, and check the lights and transport lock bar.

Gearbox · every year

McHale's yearly list. The table gearbox is greased, not oiled, so it is checked for grease rather than drained. The table drive shear bolt is greased into its sprocket flange so it does not seize.

Step-by-step

Tip the table up, fit the safety bar and secure it with its R-pin. Stop the tractor engine and take the key out.
Check the table gearbox has grease in it.
Clean and lubricate the dispenser gears.
Grease the shear bolt into the sprocket flange on the table drive roller.
Clean film tack off the aluminium dispenser rollers with paraffin or diesel, then wipe them dry.

Table drive shear bolt and cross shaft roll pin replacement

Drive · every year

A shear bolt on the driven table roller sprocket protects the table rollers. On older machines, roll pins in the gearbox cross shaft are a second overload guard (newer ones have an extra keyway). Check them before the season and carry spares.

Step-by-step

Stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
Shear bolt: take off the two handwheels and the chain guard over the table roller drive chain.
Remove the broken pieces of the old bolt, line up the hole in the sprocket with the hole in the drive flange and fit a new M8 × 35 bolt CFA00055 with nut CFA00132.
Refit the chain guard and handwheels.
Roll pins (older machines): take out the six setscrews and lift off the gearbox cover and gasket. Remove the broken pins, line up the holes in the table cross shaft and gearbox cross shaft, and fit new pins CFA00006 and CFA00009 only.
Refit the cover, with a new gasket CSE00006 if the old one is damaged, and the six setscrews.

Table drive chain adjustment

Chains · every year

McHale says all drive chains must be kept correctly tensioned and gives 10–13 mm of sag for the table drive chain. It gives no interval, so this entry checks it before each season.

Step-by-step

Raise the table fully with tip-up, swing the safety bar into place and pin it to the chassis with the R-pin. Stop the tractor and make sure it cannot be restarted.
Measure sag midway between the sprockets, with one side of the chain pulled tight.
Slacken the four M16 bolts holding the motor plate.
Turn the M16 nyloc nut until the chain has 10–13 mm of sag.
Tighten the four motor plate bolts.
Put the safety bar back in its storage position and lower the table.

Start-of-season checks

Step-by-step

Read the whole operator's manual again.
Lubricate all pivot points.
Tighten all bolts, nuts and setscrews to the torque table in the handbook.
Check all tyre pressures.
Connect the control box and check every function works.
Check the machine settings and the film wrapping, and replace the cut and hold knife. Wear gloves.
Clean tack off the dispenser rollers with paraffin or diesel and wipe them dry.
New machine: after the first 5 hours, check all nuts and bolts and grease the lift arm cylinder ends.

End-of-season lay-up

Step-by-step

Clean the wrapper inside and out. McHale prefers an air line to a pressure washer. If you wash it, work from the ground with the tractor off and the key out, and keep water off the electrics, pivots, valves and bearings.
Take the control box off the tractor and store it somewhere dry.
Lubricate all pivots and coat adjuster threads and bare ram rods with a thin layer of grease.
Touch up worn paint, or grease bare metal.
Clean the dirt off all chains and dry them with an air line.

Hydraulic hose replacement

McHale says all hydraulic hoses must be replaced every 5 years, and any faulty hydraulic or electrical part at the first sign of trouble.

Step-by-step

Lower everything to the ground, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and release the pressure in the system, including the cut and hold accumulator.
Mark each hose as you take it off so it goes back in the same place.
Fit the new hoses, check for leaks and run every function from the control box.

Known problems

Bale lift arm outer ram pin

This pin takes a very heavy load. Replace it if it is hard to grease or has more than 2 mm of play, with the arm supported in slings and the transport lock on.

Safety bar under the table

Always fit the safety bar before working under a tipped table.

Danger zone

Only enter the wrapping area with the machine running if a trained operator is at the controls in manual mode with the handbrake on. Shut down if you lose contact or get within 1.1 m of moving parts.

Control box

It is not waterproof. Keep it dry.

Repair guides

Film splitting, not stretching or catching in the cut and hold (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Film splits as the bale leaves the table, film does not stretch, film catches round the cut and hold, or the wrap is off-centre on the bale.
Cut and hold not catching, not cutting, leaking back or slow (Moderate, 1–2 hours): The cut and hold does not catch the film, does not open or close fully, will not cut, leaks back slowly, or the cut and hold and tip cycles are very slow.
Table turning but bale not rotating: shear bolt, roll pins and chain (Easy, 30 minutes to 1 hour): The table rotates but the bale does not turn (index), the table drive shear bolt keeps breaking, or the table is slow.
Table stopping in the wrong place or slow to tip (Easy, 30 minutes to 2 hours): The table stops in the wrong position, moves when tipping, the control box does not count or shows half the turns, the table is slow to tip down, or the wrapper will not reset after tipping.
Bale lift arm outer ram pin replacement (Moderate, 1–2 hours): The outer ram pin on the bale lift arm will not take grease, or has more than 2 mm of play; the arm knocks when lifting.
