Gearbox oil change

Drive · every 500 hours or every year

McHale says change the gearbox oil once a season or every 500 hours, whichever comes first, and after the first 5 hours of a new machine.

Step-by-step

Stop the tractor, take the key out and apply the brakes.
Drain the oil while it is warm: use the 17 mm spanner on the drain plug, then loosen the breather and level plug.
Refit the drain plug and fill with about 5 L of 80W-90 until oil begins to flow from the level hole.
Do not overfill: it causes overheating and leaks. Take the old oil to a recycling point.

Monthly greasing (rotor bearings, cross shaft, belt tensioner)

Rotor drive belt tension

Check the tension monthly. The tensioner's elastomeric spring should measure 70 mm.

Step-by-step

Stop the tractor, remove the key, disconnect the loom, hoses and PTO.
Take off the front left cover guard over the belt.
Measure the spring: it should be 70 mm. If not, hold the upper nut, slacken the lower nut a few threads and turn the upper nut until the spring measures 70 mm.
Lock the two nuts together and refit the guard. The manual says only qualified persons or a McHale dealer should do this.

Floor conveyor chain tension

Check monthly. Lift the middle bar at either end: the gap under it should be 40 to 60 mm.

Step-by-step

Clean the floor conveyor first, since dirt gives a false reading.
Measure the gap. If it is too big, slacken the back nut, tighten the front nut to reach 40 to 60 mm and retighten the back nut. If too small, do the opposite.
Make the left and right sides almost identical.

Tyre pressure and wheel nuts (C460/C470/C490)

Start-of-season checks

The start-of-season list is gearbox oil level, greasing all pivots, tightening bolts, tyre pressures, control box test, adjustments and removing storage grease from the beater and rotor knives.

Step-by-step

Read the manual, check the gearbox oil and grease every pivot.
Tighten all bolts to the torque table.
Check tyre pressure and test every control box function.
Wipe the storage grease off the beater and rotor knives with gloves on.

End-of-season clean and lay-up

McHale says clean the machine (an air line is better than a pressure washer), touch up paintwork, grease exposed cylinder rods, clean and lubricate the pick-up, cutting area and chamber, and store the control box dry because it is not waterproof.

Step-by-step

Clean the machine thoroughly.
Touch up any damaged paint and complete outstanding repairs.
Grease the exposed ram rods and lubricate the pick-up, cutting area and bale chamber.
Store the control box somewhere dry.

Knife check and sharpening

Cutter · when needed

The handbook gives no hours for the knives. Fit knife sections with the flat side facing the comb finger. They can be moved to the other side of the disc before sharpening so both edges are used. Sharpen on the flat side. Keep the gap to the fan blade tips at 1 to 2 mm.

Step-by-step

Switch off, stop the tractor and remove the key. Put the blower fan gearbox in neutral.
Remove the knife inspection plate, loosen the rear knife lock bolt, and set the knife height with the front and rear adjuster bolts to 1 to 2 mm from the fan blades.
Tighten the adjuster lock nuts and rear lock bolt and refit the plate.

Known problems

Fix the PTO angle

The C460/C470/C490 wide-angle PTO joint must not exceed 80 degrees; on the C430 the limit is 25 degrees. Beyond that it damages the shaft.

Repair guides

Rotor drive belt slipping or squealing: checking the tensioner spring (McHale C-series) (Moderate, 30–45 minutes): Belt squeal or slip under load, rotor slowing in heavy bales, burning rubber smell, or a monthly belt check.
Floor conveyor chain tension and slat U-bolts (McHale C-series) (Moderate, 45 minutes): Bale chamber floor slow or jumping, chain slapping or too tight, slats loose or bent.
Chopping knives: sharpening, turning and the 1–2 mm fan gap (McHale C-series) (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Poor chop, blockages in the fan, knives dull or damaged, or knife contact noise.
Gearbox oil: first change and level (McHale C-series) (Easy, 30–45 minutes): Gearbox noise or heat, oil leak at seals, new machine, or season change.
