Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
- Check the wheel nuts, all guards and safety devices, and the road lights.
- Look for oil leaks and damaged hydraulic pipes. Use card, not your hand, to find a pinhole leak.
- Grease the upper chamber pivot points, the lower chamber segment pivots and the table roller pivots.
- Check all chain adjustments and correct them if needed.

Chain oiler top-up and grease cartridge change
Chains and lubrication · every 10 hours
The auto-lube oils every chain and greases the chamber roller bearings (not the transfer roller). McHale's schedule says top up the chain oil about every 300 bales and change the grease cartridge about every 300 bales. The control box counts down 300 cycles and warns at zero.

Step-by-step
- Stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
- Unscrew the reservoir cap, fill with ISO 150–220 chain oil to the maximum mark and refit the cap fully tight. Keep the level between the marks.
- Check the oil strainer and filter in the reservoir circuit are clean.
- Change the grease cartridge about every 300 bales.
- Reset the reminder on the control box once both are done.

Chain tension adjustment
Chains and lubrication · every 10 hours
McHale says check the chains for sag after the first 500 bales and then every 1,000 bales, and lists a chain check in the daily list. Adjust the chopper unit duplex chain after the first 5 hours.
Step-by-step
- Stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Measure sag midway between sprockets, with one side of the chain pulled tight.
- Main drive chain: turn the turnbuckle until gap D is 25 mm. Reduce the gap as the chain wears. When the turnbuckle runs out, move the spring end to the second hole on the tensioner bracket.
- Bottom door to main drive chain: set gap D to 25 mm with the turnbuckle in the same way.
- Top and bottom chamber door chains: turn the M12 nyloc nut until the spring is compressed to the length of its spring guide. The guide is only an indicator, so check the tension after.
- Pick-up reel tine chain: slacken the bolt, turn the tine sprocket anticlockwise, push the nylon chain slide up its slot, hold it and retighten. Keep sag to a minimum.
- Check the chains after the first 500 bales and then every 1,000 bales.

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
- Grease the pick-up reel shaft bearings and the pick-up cam clutch.
- Look over the pick-up tines and replace any that are broken or bent. No tine part number was found: check your handbook.
- Take out the gearbox level plug (8 mm Allen key). Oil should just seep out. Top up with SAE 80W/90 through the filler if not, but never overfill.

Main gearbox oil change

McHale: first change after 5 hours, then once a season or every 10,000 bales, whichever comes first. The gearbox has no filter. Overfilling makes it overheat and leak.

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, stop the tractor engine, take the key out, apply the brakes and take the PTO shaft off. The gearbox is at the back of the PTO shaft.
- Take out the filler plug, then the drain plug, and drain the oil fully.
- Refit the drain plug.
- Fill with 2.0–2.2 L of SAE 80W/90, or until oil begins to seep from the level plug hole. Do not overfill.
- Refit the level and filler plugs.
- Change it once a season or every 10,000 bales, whichever comes first, and after the first 5 hours on a new baler.
- Take the old oil to a recycling centre.

- Check the axle U-bolts are at 450 Nm. They should also have been checked after the first 5 hours.

- Clean and lubricate the dispenser gears.
- Clean tack off the dispenser rollers with paraffin whenever it builds up.

Step-by-step
- Blow the machine down with an air line rather than a pressure washer. If you do wash it, work from the ground and keep water off the electrics, pivots, valves and bearings.
- Clean and lubricate the pick-up, cutting unit and bale chamber.
- Grease the points on the greasing decal inside the left-hand door panel (decal CST00739), and grease all bare hydraulic rams.
- Do any repairs now and touch up the paint.
- Store the control box somewhere dry: it is not waterproof.

Known problems
Overload clutch clicking means a blockage
A blockage in the feed channel makes the PTO overload clutch click loudly. Stop the PTO, hold Unblock for three seconds in Auto, then restart the PTO slowly. Lumps then pass into the chamber.
Gearbox overfilling
McHale warns that too much oil makes the gearbox overheat and leak. Use 2.0–2.2 L.
PTO joint angle
The wide-angle joint must never go past 80 degrees, or it is damaged for good.
Chain oiler figures differ
The schedule says top up about every 300 bales, but the lubrication page says the 5 L tank lasts about 500 bales. Top up at 300 to be safe.
Repair guides
- Net wrap faults: net not cut, cut badly, or wrong number of layers (Moderate, 1–2 hours): The net is not cut, the cut is ragged, the net error symbol shows and the cycle stops, the net slips on the feed rollers, or bales come out with too little or too much net.
- PTO slip clutch going off: blockages, knives and rotor chain (Moderate, 30 minutes to 2 hours): The PTO overload clutch clicks loudly or keeps slipping, the machine stalls in heavy crop, or it takes more power than expected when chopping.
- Pick-up slip clutch going off and broken pick-up tines (Easy, 1–2 hours): The pick-up slip clutch keeps going off, the machine breaks tines, or the pick-up reel chain is slack.
- Chopper knives dropping, not moving or low knife pressure (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Knives will not stay up while chopping, knife pressure is low or drops completely, knife pressure is too high, or the knives will not engage or disengage.
- Soft-edged bales, chamber losing pressure, crop not taken in (Moderate, 30 minutes to 2 hours): Bales have soft edges or corners, chamber pressure falls away, or the baler stops taking in crop before the chamber is full.
