McHale V660 service schedule

The profi used-machinery guide (reprinted by McHale) says the oil in the main gearbox should be changed at the first 50 hour service and then at least once a year. The operator's manual was not available, so check it for the grade and quantity.

Step-by-step

Park on level ground, switch off the tractor, take the key out and apply the brakes. Wait until everything has stopped.
Put the tray under the gearbox drain plug and take the plug out. Let it drain warm.
Refit the plug with a new sealing washer and tighten it.
Refill through the filler breather with the oil grade and quantity in your handbook, then check the level.
Look at the input shaft seal for weeping and feel for play in the shaft while the oil is out.

Chain oiler check and top-up

The profi guide says the chain oil tank needs a top up every 300 bales, so on a busy baler this is a season job. This task is the yearly check of the pump, tank filter and felt pads.

Step-by-step

Top up the oil tank with clean oil if it is low. Use the grade in your handbook.
Check the felt pads are saturated with oil. Replace the wick kit if they are dry or worn.
Check the oil tubes for leaks and kinks.
Run the baler and check oil reaches the chamber drive chains, rotor chain, pick-up chains and the cam track.

Step-by-step

Stop the baler and make it safe. Lower the drop floor and lock the tailgate before going near the knives.
Check the pick-up tines for bent or missing tines and replace any damaged ones.
Check the chopper knives for dull or chipped edges. Replace or sharpen them as a set.
Check the drive chains for stretch and for stiff links and check the white polymer tensioners are in good order.
Check the chamber belts for cracks and frayed edges.
Check the net knife edge.

Known problems

Scorched yellow paint on the rotor housing

The profi guide says this suggests the slip clutch has slipped repeatedly (a blockage history).

Weeping gearbox input seal or shaft play

Check this when buying or after a service. The guide says it is not a common problem.

Dry chain oiler pads

Starved chains wear fast. Check the pads are saturated.
