Step-by-step

Park level, disengage the PTO, stop the engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Wait for everything to stop turning.
Check the wheel nuts, guards and safety devices, road lights and indicators.
Look for oil leaks and damaged pipes. Never use your hand to find a leak: use card.
Grease the 3 heavy-duty PTO shaft points (lower 3 on McHale's diagram).
Grease the chamber door hinge points and give the tension arm rollers one stroke per point (about every 1,200 bales).
Grease all pivot points from the central grease blocks, check the chain adjustments, and clear crop from the brake hubs.
Check bearings for early signs of wear.

Chain oiler top-up

Chains and lubrication · every 10 hours

The 3 L reservoir lasts about 12 working hours. Keep the level between min and max. The control box alarm counts down from 300 bales.

Disengage the PTO, stop the engine, take the key out and apply the brakes.
Open the cap, top up with clean chain oil to the max mark and refit the cap.
Reset the control box counter when you refill.

Central grease blocks and grease cartridge

Greasing · every 60 hours

McHale: 2 centralised grease blocks (chamber rollers, rotor bearing and the left pick-up drive gears) about every 1,200 bales, and one block (other bearings and bushings) about every 300 bales. Optional automatic greasing: replace the cartridge about every 1,200 bales.

Step-by-step

Stop the PTO and engine and secure the baler.
Give each point one stroke of the gun: bale chamber rollers, rotor bearing and pick-up drive gears from the two central blocks, other bearings and bushings from the third.
Fit a new cartridge on the automatic greaser about every 1,200 bales or every fourth oil fill.

Greasing · every month

McHale: monthly, grease the pick-up reel shaft bearings and the pick-up cam clutch and check the gearbox oil level. The gearbox is behind the PTO shaft and comes as a 540 rpm or 1,000 rpm unit with different oil quantities.

Re-check the axle bolts at 250 Nm.
Wear gloves, the net knife is sharp. Clean and lightly lubricate all moving parts of the netter unit.
Wash the machine at the end of the season, keeping water jets off bearings, valves and electrics.

Step-by-step

Read the operator's manual again and check the gearbox oil.
Lubricate all pivot points, tighten fasteners and check tyre pressures.
Connect the control box and test every function.
Refit the chopper knives if you took them out and check the net knife is sharp (gloves).
Fill the chain oil reservoir, then with everyone clear run the PTO at about 200 rpm for 10 to 15 minutes.
Grease all points and check the net tension pump oil.

End-of-season lay-up

Wash the baler and dry it. Keep water off the electrics, valves and bearings.
Lubricate pivots and put a thin film of grease on adjuster threads and exposed ram rods.
Fill the chain oil reservoir and run the PTO for 10 to 15 minutes.
Grease all points and the central blocks.

Known problems

PTO overload clutch clicking

A loud clicking from the PTO overload clutch means the pick-up is blocked. Turn the tractor PTO off straight away and clear it.

Gearbox oil and tyre figures

The readable text I could see did not give the gearbox oil grade or the tyre pressures. Use your own handbook.
