Every 50 hours check the needle/knotter brake (spring length X is first set to 26 to 27 mm) and the knotter shear bolt. New Holland recommends changing the knotter shear bolt every 2,500 bales. Burnish the brake at the start of the season.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Knotter shear bolt1M8 x 65 (10.9). Use only the genuine type. No New Holland number in the manual: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Engage the trip arm safety lock before working on the knotter, twister or needles. Moving parts can run on after drive is disengaged.
  2. Brake check with no twine in the needles: run at 540 rpm PTO, trip the knotter and see if the needle yoke falls by its own weight on the way down. If it does, tighten the nuts a little at a time and keep the springs equal.
  3. At the normal 1,000 rpm PTO, trip the knotter a few times. The clutch arm must not be lifted every time the lobe passes the clutch roller if the setting is right.
  4. Change the shear bolt every 2,500 bales. Turn the flywheel by hand until the decal mark on the main gearbox crank lines up with the plate, so the knotter timing mark lines up with the knotter gearbox mark, apply the flywheel brake, then fit the bolt.
  5. If the knotter PTO shaft has turned for any reason, fit the shear bolt only at the timing mark.

Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench, Gloves

Start-of-season clutch burnish and checks

Clutches · every year

New Holland: all main rotating parts are protected by a slip clutch. Before a new season the slip clutches have to be burnished to polish the friction discs. The main drive slip clutch is 1,600 Nm (870 and 890) or 1,900 Nm (1270 and 1290). The packer clutch is 3,000 to 3,200 Nm (Packer) or 4,550 to 4,750 Nm (PackerCutter). The rotor cut-out clutch cannot be adjusted.

Step-by-step
  1. Main drive slip clutch: check the spring length with the special gauge tool (44.4 mm for 870 and 890, 42.9 mm for 1270 and 1290). Adjust all springs equally in a clockwise direction.
  2. To burnish a slip clutch, loosen the nuts slightly until the springs are released, block the packer with a wooden block, turn the flywheel by hand until the clutch slips and retighten the nuts until the springs are the same length as the bushings.
  3. Do not change the preset torque of the packer clutch.
  4. Never reset the rotor cut-out clutch with the tractor PTO engaged.

Tools: Spring length gauge tool for your torque, Spanners, Wooden block

Cleaning and brakes

Storage · every year

New Holland: clean the baler regularly and before any inspection. Do not use water: use compressed air or a blower, because wet debris rusts. Have the brake drum linings checked annually by a dealer. Oil all linkages, threaded rods and pivots that stiffen, and after using a pressure washer.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Known problems

Do not clean with water

New Holland says not to use water to clean the baler: left-behind wet debris speeds up rust and corrosion. Use compressed air.

Knotter shear bolt timing

If the knotter drive shaft has turned for any reason, fit the shear bolt only at the timing mark. The needle timing depends on it.

Use only the correct shear bolt

A different type of bolt may not shear as intended and cause more damage.
