Chain oiling: daily

Chains and lubrication · every 8 hours

New Holland says oil all the chains every day, or more often in abrasive conditions, with new motor oil (10W-30, 30W), in the middle or at the end of the day when the chains are warm. Then run the baler at idle for a few minutes to let it soak in. On balers with the optional oiler, keep the reservoir full of clean motor oil.

Chain oil (alternative)110W-30. New Holland Ambra Master Gold HSP SAE 10W-30 (1 US quart). Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XT9613313
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and apply the park brake.
  2. Oil every chain, preferably when they are warm after work.
  3. Run the baler at idle for a few minutes to let the oil soak into the pins and barrels.
  4. On a baler with the optional chain oiler, a pump works each time the tailgate opens: keep its reservoir topped up.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine and secure the baler.
  2. Wipe the nipples clean and grease each one on the 8-hour chart in your handbook (25 points; not every baler has all of them).
  3. Oil the sledge roll drive chain and pick-up drive chain with SAE 10W-30 at the end of the day.
  4. Grease the pick-up stuffer tube nipples on 1.8 m and 2.1 m wide stuffer pick-ups once a week: there is a big cavity between tube and inner shaft.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Drive chain tension check

Chains · every 8 hours

New Holland puts 'check drive chains for proper adjustment' on the every-8-hours service chart. Spring lengths are given for the main chains.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine and secure the baler.
  2. Belt drive roll chain: set the spring to 375 mm inside the end hooks.
  3. Wide pick-up chain: spring length 130 mm.
  4. Rotor pick-up drive chain: spring 117 to 123 mm. Jackshaft idler right-hand chain (rotor cutter): 0 to 16 mm deflection at the centre of the span.
  5. Sledge, floor roll, dimpled roll and starter roll chains have spring-loaded idlers: set the spring to the length of the plated guide (64 mm for the sledge, 188 mm for the floor, dimpled and starter rolls).
  6. On non-rotor units the long span of the roll drive chain should deflect 0 to 1.5 mm without pre-load.

Tools: Spanners, Rule

Fifty-hour or weekly greasing

Greasing · every 50 hours

The every-50-hours list covers the PTO u-joints, slide and shields, the gearbox output shaft, the net wrap actuator arm pivot, twine knife shaft, wide pick-up over-run clutch (3 places) and radial pin clutch, rotor knife insertion shafts, Auto Wrap pivots and clutch roller, belt drive idler pivots, tailgate latch rollers and the gearbox oil level.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine and secure the baler.
  2. Grease each point on the 50-hour chart. The wide pick-up radial pin clutch may need grease more often if it slips.
  3. Use a wrench to remove the gearbox dipstick. The oil must be between the two marks. Add oil through the same hole.
  4. Check the Auto Wrap gearbox plug hole: oil should be at its bottom edge.

Tools: Grease gun, Wrench for the dipstick, Rags

Belts, lacing and cable inspection

Bale chamber · every 50 hours

New Holland: inspect the belts and lacing every week. Replace any broken lacing cable or cable with wear through the nylon coat, and check the cable and laces every week. The belts must be within 37 mm of each other in length.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the belt condition, lacing and cable every week.
  2. If belts slip, increase the initial tension by tightening the density springs. For more, remove the tension and move the upper rear tailgate roller.
  3. Store spare belts rolled up, in a dry place above ground and not on edge.
  4. Keep the baler belts under tension except when doing maintenance.

Tools: Lacing tool, Cutters

Gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every 1,000 hours or every year

New Holland: change the gearbox oil after the first 50 hours of use, then yearly (20,000 bales or 1,000 hours). Drain through the drain plug and fill with 1.79 L of Ambra Hypoide 90 gear lube up to the dipstick marks. There is no filter. The Auto Wrap gearbox also takes this oil: change it after 50 hours then yearly.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  1. Park level and stop the PTO and engine.
  2. Drain the oil from the gearbox through the drain plug, then fit the plug.
  3. Add 1.79 L of Ambra Hypoide 90 gear lube and check the dipstick: the oil must be between the marks.
  4. For the Auto Wrap gearbox, take off the end cover by removing its six bolts, drain, refit and reseal the cover, then add oil to the bottom edge of the plug hole.

Tools: Drain tray (5 L), Wrench for plugs, Funnel, Gloves

Pick-up shear bolt (rotor units)

Shear bolts · every year

Balers with a rotor have a shear bolt protecting the pick-up. If it breaks the pick-up is most likely plugged. Find out why first.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Pick-up shear bolt1Genuine New Holland shear bolt: no number in the manual, check your handbook and parts bookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine. Clean out the pick-up (easier with the wind guard removed).
  2. Turn the latch and pivot the shield open.
  3. Use a wrench on one hex to turn the pick-up until a pair of shear bolt holes line up.
  4. Fit the bolt from the inside through the big hole in the inner sprocket, seat the head against the keeper and put on the lock nut.
  5. Close the shield.

Tools: Wrench, Spare shear bolts

PTO slip clutch burnish and clutch checks

Clutches · every year

New Holland: burnish the PTO slip clutch at the start of the season or after a long idle spell so the discs do not stick. The clutch setting is 1,400 Nm on BR7060 and BR7070 non-rotor balers.

Step-by-step
  1. Mark the bolt heads. Loosen the bolts three and a half turns.
  2. Engage the tractor PTO at low rpm for five seconds. Let the clutch cool for two minutes.
  3. Engage the PTO again for five seconds and let it cool two minutes.
  4. Tighten the bolts against the ring to 54 to 61 Nm.
  5. If the clutch slips too easily, check the bolts are tight and there is no grease or oil on the plates. Changing the friction discs is a dealer job.

Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench

Preparing for storage and end-of-season check

Storage · every year

New Holland's storage list: cut the twine and take the balls out, clean thoroughly, lubricate everything, oil the chains and run the baler, coat bare metal with oil, clean the belts of oil and grease, keep them under tension and store under cover. Order worn parts before the next season.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1EP2 grease. New Holland Ambra Hi-Temp grease. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 29861804DS
Step-by-step
  1. Cut the twine near the balls, take them indoors and leave the twine end threaded.
  2. Take the operator's manual out and keep it safe. Clean the baler thoroughly including belt rolls, wrapper area and twine boxes. Remove twine wrapped on the pick-up tines.
  3. Lubricate the whole baler as in the lubrication section and put lubricant on the adjusting bolt threads and hinges.
  4. Oil all chains and run the baler a few minutes. Check the bearings for heat, which shows a failing bearing.
  5. Put a light coat of oil on bare metal, especially the inside of the bale chamber side sheets.
  6. Clean oil and grease off the belts and store the baler with the belts at normal tension, under cover if possible.
  7. Check the twine and net knives, V-belts, chains and sprockets, hitch, bushings, wrapper, pick-up tines and cam bearings, belts and lacing, and tailgate lights, and order parts for anything worn.

Tools: Cleaning equipment, Grease gun, Oil can
