Service jobs and parts

Grease points (50-hour list)

Chassis · every 50 hours

The handbook greases the rear wheel hubs (two nipples), the lift and linkage and the 2WD steering cylinder every 50 hours, and on 4WD tractors the steering cylinders, front axle pivot, transmission shaft and front PTO coupling. Do it more often in dust or mud.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park level, lower the linkage, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Wipe each nipple clean, then pump in grease. Rear wheel hubs: one nipple each side. Keep pumping until fresh grease comes out of the guard, which shows the chamber is full. Turn the wheel as you pump so it fills evenly.
  3. Grease the lift and linkage fittings and the steering cylinder nipples (2WD cylinder, or the 4WD cylinders).
  4. On 4WD tractors also grease the front axle pivot, the transmission shaft and the front PTO coupling where fitted, and the 2WD pivot and stub axles on 2WD tractors.
  5. Wipe off surplus grease. In very dusty or boggy work repeat the hub greasing more often to push out dirt and water.

Tools: Grease gun, Rag

Cooler, condenser and intercooler clean

Cooling · every 100 hours

The handbook's 100-hour group lists the transmission oil cooler, the air conditioning condenser and the intercooler. A blocked pack makes the engine and transmission run hot.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and let it cool.
  2. Blow the dust out of the transmission oil cooler, air-conditioning condenser (if fitted) and intercooler from the clean side outwards, with low-pressure air.
  3. Do not use a hard jet or poke anything into the fins; bent fins stop the airflow.

Tools: Compressed air at low pressure, Soft brush

Engine air filter: clean the outer cartridge

Engine · every 300 hours

The handbook cleans the outer air cartridge every 300 hours and fits a new inner safety cartridge after every third cleaning. At 1,200 hours or a year both are replaced together. Clean sooner in dusty work.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Remove the cover and pull out the outer cartridge. Never take out or clean the inner safety cartridge while you do this.
  3. Clean the outer cartridge as your handbook shows and wipe the inside of the housing.
  4. Check the cartridge for splits or damage and fit a new one if it is damaged.
  5. Refit the cartridge and cover.

Tools: Compressed air at low pressure or a soft brush, Clean damp cloth

Transmission oil filters change

Hydraulics · every 300 hours

The handbook changes the transmission oil filter every 300 hours, and on Power Shuttle or Dual Command tractors a second oil filter on the right-hand side. The filter is also changed every time the transmission oil is changed.

  3. Unscrew the filter and let it drain, then throw it away properly. Clean the filter seat.
  4. Oil the new filter's seal lightly, screw it on until it touches, then tighten by hand a further 3/4 turn (one full turn at most).
  5. Fill through the filler cap with fresh oil.
  6. Run at idle for at least 3 minutes, stop, then check the dipstick reads between MIN and MAX and top up. Check for leaks.

Tools: Drain tray (12 L), Spanners for the two sump plugs, Filter wrench, Funnel, Gloves

Fuel filter and fuel pre-filter change

Fuel · every 500 hours

The handbook lists the fuel filter and the fuel pre-filter at 500 hours for the T4.75F and T4.85F, and at 600 hours for the T4.95F and T4.105F. Dirt in the injection system does expensive damage, so clean the area before you slacken anything.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Fuel injector pressure check (dealer)

Fuel · every 1,800 hours

The handbook lists the injectors at 1,800 hours and says have your dealer check the pressure settings. Dirt entering the injection system does damage, so this is a workshop job.

Step-by-step
  1. Book the tractor in with your dealer.
  2. Never look for fuel leaks with your hand: high-pressure diesel can go through skin.

Known problems

Two engine-oil intervals

The handbook gives 500 hours for the T4.75F and T4.85F and 600 hours for the T4.95F and T4.105F. This entry uses 500 hours for both, which is the cautious figure.

Two oil filter numbers

The New Holland dealer lists both 84475545 and 87679598 (now 47535939) against these tractors. Check the engine code on your plate before ordering.

Scrambled fluids table

The copy of the handbook used has a scrambled fluids table, so the transmission and axle oil names are not certain. Check your handbook before topping up.

Mineral brake fluid

The brakes use LHM mineral fluid. DOT brake fluid will ruin the seals.
