PVT drive belt and clutch inspection

Transmission · every 100 hours or every year

Polaris says inspect the drive belt every 100 hours or yearly and have the clutches inspected by a dealer at the same time. Every 600 hours the full PVT service is due. Belt slip makes heat that destroys belts: use Low range at slow speeds.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Drive belt1Replaces 3211218; replace only if worn or glazed3212367
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, chock the wheels, select Neutral and stop the engine. Take the key out.
  2. Lift the cargo box and remove the clutch cover. Keep the cover gasket in its groove.
  3. Look at the belt for cracks, glazing, missing cogs or a narrowed width. Replace it if worn.
  4. To remove, squeeze the belt into the driven clutch to make slack, pull it off the driven clutch and turn the clutch by hand until it comes off.
  5. Clear all debris from the clutches, the cover and the whole air duct. Polaris warns debris left behind can cause loss of control.
  6. Fit the new belt over the drive clutch, then over the top of the driven clutch, and turn the driven clutch until it seats.
  7. Refit the cover and tighten the screws to 5.5–6.5 N·m.

Tools: 3/8 in socket, ratchet and extension, Torque wrench (5.5–6.5 N·m), Torch

Spark plug inspection

Engine · every 100 hours or every year

  1. Let the engine cool and take the key out.
  2. Clean round the plug, pull off the cap and unscrew the plug.
  3. Check the electrodes and set the gap to 0.7–0.9 mm, or fit a new plug.
  4. Screw it in by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten as your handbook says.

Tools: Plug socket, Feeler gauge

Brake fluid change

Brakes · every 200 hours

Polaris says change the brake fluid (DOT 4) every 200 hours or 3,200 km. Check the level and pad wear at 25 hours on a new machine.

PartQtyNotesPart number
DOT 4 brake fluid1DOT 4. 350 ml bottle. Aztec Oils match: HYDRATEC DOT 4 BF2872189
Step-by-step
  1. Brake work affects your safety: if you are not experienced, have your dealer do it.
  2. Use fresh DOT 4 from a sealed bottle. Keep the reservoir topped up while bleeding so air does not get in.
  3. Bleed each caliper until clean fluid with no bubbles comes out, then check the pedal is firm before driving.
  4. Brake fluid damages paint: wipe spills at once.

Tools: Brake bleeding kit, Spanner for bleed nipples, Clear tube and jar

Valve clearance check

Engine · every 500 hours

Polaris says inspect and adjust valve clearance every 500 hours or 8,000 km, and marks it as a dealer job.

Step-by-step
  1. Have a Polaris dealer or qualified mechanic check the clearances with the engine cold.

Tools: Dealer job

Coolant change

Cooling · every 5 years

Polaris says change the coolant every 5 years, check the level and strength every 100 hours or yearly, and pressure test the system yearly.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Polaris 50/50 antifreeze premix14.75 L; gallon part number2880513
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine. Never open the radiator cap hot.
  2. Drain and refill as your handbook describes, then top up through the overflow bottle.
  3. Some level drop on a new machine is normal as air purges. Recheck after the first runs.
  4. Coolant is poisonous to animals; dispose of it properly.

Tools: Drain tray, Funnel

Known problems

Belt burning from slip

Polaris says belt slip makes heat that destroys belts, wears the clutches and can melt the outer cover. Use Low range for slow work and heavy loads.

Debris after a belt failure

If a belt breaks, clean every bit of belt and debris out of the clutches and air duct. Polaris warns leftover debris can cause loss of control.

Wrong or mixed engine oil

Polaris warns that mixing oil brands or using a non-recommended oil can cause serious engine damage. Stick to PS-4.

Severe use halves intervals

Frequent mud, water or sand, heavy slow loads, long idling and short cold trips all count as severe use. Polaris says service at half the stated interval.
